  • Grafting tomatoes onto vigorous, disease-resistant rootstocks is one of the biggest advancements in tomato production ever. We’ve been getting lots of questions about grafting and rootstocks lately, so we leapt at the opportunity to get some answers straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, by interviewing Martijn van Stee of Enza Zaden seeds about what makes tomato rootstocks so vigorous and disease resistant. Martijn has worked on breeding rootstocks for years, and we really enjoyed this conversation from the Netherlands, where Enza is based (zaden means “seeds” in Dutch).
Tune in to find out why rootstocks are the mules of the vegetable world, and how they are able to convey such a vigor and disease resistance increase to varieties they are grafted onto. Hear why it is worth grafting even if you don’t have disease problems, how to turn the extra vigor into yield, and what the trends in rootstock breeding are. If you’ve ever wondered whether grafting makes sense for you or how it works, this interview is for you!
Here's a link to an article from Growing for Market Magazine that talks more about rootstocks and tomato grafting:
