- One of the most important developments we continue to work on with Mikko is her speech. Mikko has what is called Echolalia and despite the fact that she is nonverbal, she seems to be making progress towards understanding words. The question is, is Mikko just mimicking or is she really starting to understand words? No matter what, the journey to verbal communication continues as we manage the day!
Echolalia immediate is repeating a word directly after hearing it. But Echolalia delayed is repeating words or phrases you’ve heard earlier in the day or weeks before and repeating them constantly. To someone on the outside, it doesn’t make sense to the action or even what she is actually needing or wanting in the moment.
Her most common words are: yeah, wow, yay, thank you and I did it. If you are an advocate of our videos, you will notice these are all words and phrases I constantly say to her.

When i was in 1st grade there was a kid just like Mikko. He was stimming 24/7 and he was nonverbal and knew very little signs. He loved to dance so we did Just Dance when he was in our classroom. He had fragile bones and couldn't really play with anyone because of that. I am now in 7th grade and he is still doing great. He has learned new things. Mikko I am proud of you girl. You keep growing.

Great job. Mikko. I had many autistic students with Echolalia who eventually progressed to age appropriate speech and language. Also, floor play is extremely effective. Precious, first, let me tell you that I really love the new editing style! Let your editor know that they’re doing a great job. And if that’s you awesome :-) I do not have anyone in my family that’s autistic that I’m aware of however, I find your videos to be very helpful as a “gentle” reminder that peoples differences are OK. We don’t all have to be the same to be considered “normal”. What’s normal to one person is unique to that person. Let us embrace each other’s differences. That’s what I get from your videos.
And I find it gives me an inside look of others. My children were all born fine mentally and physically. I get to understand what others go thru.

Mikko’s speech progression is nothing short of amazing. You two are working wonderfully together! My three year old son uses echolalia as well. Speech therapy has been hard to get into in my area, due to offices being backed up from the pandemic. Great job mom for continuing to believe in and push your baby positively.
Of course she’s talking! I always believed she would because she’s so vocal. You do great working with her.

My child echoed when she was younger. I think , for her, it was a way of physically learning to make the sounds before learning their function as language. We did eventually use the echoing as a way to get her to answer yes or no questions. We'd say "Do you want milk? Yes or No?" She say "No" because she was echoing the last word. So we didn't give her the milk. But then we'd ask again & switch the order of the "yes" or "no" part. It took her a little time, but she started understanding the relationship of the words to our response ...and she didn't get too frustrated because we guided her to respond so she could get what she wanted.
She will eventually talk. Don't stop speaking to her.
I am autistic and use verbal stims and i have had friends with echolalia and based on my experience the verbal stims assist emotional regualtion, its soothing to us, like a pressure release. Very important to feel comfortable, safe and supported when making these sounds
My 4 year old was extremely delayed in talking, he didn’t start until 27 months old and he also started out with echolalia and some simple things he had memorized like counting, abc’s, etc but now at 4 years old he’s fully conversational. He is still a little delayed from his peers but he gets speech therapy at preschool as well as an outside therapist that I take him to weekly. His journey to language has looked much different than the “norm” but he’s figured it out in his own way
Thank you! You just explained my situation, the difference is that I live in Africa and here in my country therapy is not very common or available, if at all very expensive. My boy will be four next month and he's better at interacting now, I'm sure they always figure it out in the long run, we need to be patient with them and encouraging 🙏🏾
How often does your child see a speech therapist? My soon to be 3-year old sees a therapist for 30mins every week. I don’t believe this is enough and haven’t seen any progress. He’s very limited in speech- he uses echolalia often and doesn’t initiate words on his own.
@@Genesis55555 I take him to speech therapy once a week for 1 hour and he also gets speech at school twice a week now that he’s in preschool but the things that have helped him more than anything else are being in school with other children and working with him at home and he just eventually started using his echolalia functionally and now he talks non stop. He still struggles some with understanding multiple step instructions and things like saying “he” instead of “I” when he wants something and mixing up his pronouns so speech is still really helping with that but getting him in a classroom with kids his age everyday has been a game changer for him. There was a point when I was extremely concerned he would never functionally speak.

As a Mom of a 5 year old autistic daughter I know the daily joys of seeing mine do or say something new.
My daughter was mostly non verbal until about 3 1/2 then she started counting and saying her ABC’s in sign language and using her voice. Then by 4 she started repeating words and saying words we finally discovered was her way of saying the word. At 4 we realized she could read, we were so amazed, that she was sounding out the words.
She gets so excited and stems when we understand what she is saying and/or reading.
She still doesn’t have conversations mostly yes and no answers to questions. She often stops playing to tell us something, but beyond that there is no long conversation. She is good at telling us what she wants, which is a blessing. She is definitely strong willed and determined. We are trying to work on her patience which she has very little. She gets quickly frustrated when we don’t understand what she is saying and has meltdowns when she doesn’t get what she asks for.
Which I’ve learned as partly our fault. We were so excited she was asking for things we would jump and get them for her, because we were so excited. Now she expects us to keep that up. 😅
It’s harder Somedays than others, but she brings me such joy. When she says I love you more or randomly gives me a hug.
I’ve learned to stop obsessing about what her future will be and enjoy our journey and everyday surprises.

My son had echolalia. He also has a speech and language disability. We sent him to public specialized school and he received speech therapy. Then we put him in a regular private school/kindergarten program and private speech therapy. He just started developing his own language skills during his pre-kindergarten kindergarten years. Maybe it was the extra time with storybooks and treats. Maybe it was the speech therapy (but therapist kept giving me praise for what I was doing at home) Maybe it was sport activities (basketball, soccer and swimming)that forced him to pay attention and use appropriate language. Maybe it was the countless hours of reading and learning how to spell 20 new words every week. He’s in a general education 6th grade now; he receives a lot of tutoring services while attending an online private school program. He’s making A’s, B’s and one C in cursive handwriting. I’m very happy with his progress. We always give him gifts that allows him to be more expressive with language (everything any kid would need to put on a puppet show including a multitude of puppets and stage); then we watch him put on a show. It worked! He will still most likely require tutoring until he graduates from high school.

When I first found your channel I don’t think Mikko would have been able to do that. Mom, Dad, brother & sister are really helping Mikko to live her best life!!

i work with some kids who have echolalia, one kid in particular it was his way of communication and a way i could understand his emotions. Even though the words themselves didn’t make sense in context, when he was angry he would repeat scenes from movies where the person was angry. it’s different for everyone but i think sometimes the words have more meaning than simply repetition. I’ve also had kids who definitely echolalia is their way of stimming or self soothing
My Grandson is 3 1/2, and does this. He was eval'd but was not dx'd with Autism but rather OCD and ADHD. I honestly believe the eval is wrong. He has been in speech since he was 2 and still does not initiate conversation. He DID recently start saying "maw maw" when he wants to get my attention. He can now repeat almost anything...but it's just not his own. He also lines up his toys, usually dinosaurs or horses, like your girl lined up her balls. Mikko is such a lovely girl and you are so patient with her. God Bless your family! I started watching your channel to learn more and possibly be able to help my grandson when he stays with me. I watch him 2 days a week while mom and dad work.
Are his parents pursuing this multiple diagnosis? At only 3 and half, give him time
My son was 4 and half before he was speaking on his own. He is at the top of class.now at age 14 and has always been a math whiz.
He always lined up his cars and crayons too. Wow, ocd and adhd, at 4 and a half! How do they know? How do doctors determine when a toddler gas ocd? They are toddlers! Sometimes I think we are seeking disorders when there are none.
Edit, 3 and a half years old with ocd diagnosis, I would be questioning that.
@@irenegonzalez201 They aren't pursuing anything. They were referred to testing by the pediatrician. The pediatrician suspected Autism.

Precious, have you ever heard of Gestalt Language Processing? It's more common in autistic people and, to me, it looks a lot like the way Mikko is picking up language!
In really basic terms, Gestalt processors learn whole phrases and their contextual usage before learning single words and how to string them together on their own. Maybe worth researching! I learned the same way as a kid 🙂

Well, I'm to crying. Tears are flowing. I'm so happy with Mikko's progress. It may be slower that Mom wants. But Mom shows patience. Mikko is steadily moving forward. Mom, what will you do when she does go to school?? I think I would be crying. Eventually she will want more and more independence. Way to go Mikko!!!! 😊😊

Precious, I just want to say how being apart of your channel has made me a more patient gentle mom. The way you show just patience love and restraint with Mikko is beautiful. @@AptFlickz I think maybe YOU need to read what I said! I never said Mikko would not be smart, just that Autism cannot be healed but progress can be made! Sorry you took it like that! I have taught children in the spectrum for 30 years and have family members with Autism so I can speak from experience! It is harmful when people believe children will grow out of Autism. It does a disservice to them and their families. Not sure why you presumed to know what I was thinking! I know God does wonders and it takes hard work and dedication to raise any child but Autism is definitely a different way to approach strategies needed to help the person to function! Stay blessed!

I know from experience of being around autistic children, they are brilliant at many things or one thing. They learn in different ways , at times but it's very interesting, to see the ways in which they learn. Patience is the virtue most needed when working with them, the love comes naturally.

I still randomly burst out with echolalia and for anyone not quite sure why we do it, I like to explain that if my brain hears a sound that it LOVES and that excites it, it just wants to keep repeating it.
I may repeat it until I've gotten the perfect pitch or tone, or just repeat it in different accents.
It's an instant dopamine boost and my partner and I have recently discovered I most likely have perfect pitch just from being able to mimic noises.

I’m in tears bc I have a 24 month old(2yr old). And we are going through evaluations with birth to three program. My daughter doesn’t speak yet. She just babbles, she’s still on a nuk and she started walking at 15-16months. I try to make the best out of everyday. Some days are harder than others. I spent a lot of time confused, frustrated and stressed I thought bc I had her my first and only child at the age of 42, that it’s my fault and maybe I’m not doing something right! But watching your channel has given me a new found sense of purpose and strength and even courage! Thank you 🙏🏽 ❤
This was my daughter until she was five she’s six now and she say sentences read the books spelling she knows a lot now she’s improving receiving a B a therapy speech and older and I get so excited when I see your daughter growing and learning

Thank you for explaining this! A small suggestion I have for understanding: if you tried using 1-word verbs in American Sign Language (for example, the word sit), you could sign the word and say it, then show her the action. Perhaps that would help? Still... Mikko is the sweetest little girl, and I'm so happy for her!
There is a documentary and book called Underestimated : The Autism Miracle by JB Handley-which focuses on a new method of communication for kids with autism that's having a hard time communicating. It may help Mikko. Your such an amazing mom and family. I pray God gives you the strength everyday to continue to be an advocate/ teacher/wonderful mother to that beautiful girl. GOD BLESS.
I usually had to explain echolalia to parents as an Exceptional Ed teacher of students in the Spectrum because some thought they were being uncooperative when told to stop repeating! My son was the same. We were surprised when he started speaking more clearly around 4, that what we thought was babbling was him actually singing, or saying a favorite phrase, just because or for a audio/vocal stim.

It sounded like when Mikko handed you that little bag she said "play with me" 😊 i have a 4 year old autistic son and he just started talking at around 3.5 years. I remember the first time he said i love you. I never thought id hear it. Mikkos doing great as are you. Keep up the great work! ❤

Love seeing her progress. My son was just diagnosed with autism and uses echolalia, he’s four. I’m noticing that as he learns more words and understands their meanings he’s decreasing his echolalia, it’s taking time but he’s learning and it felt like I didn’t see progress for a long time, now week to week I’m seeing improvement

She's doing really well. My son has autism, though an adult now. As she grows and learns you will see her blossom and who knows what amazing hidden talent will emerge.
