The fact that Robloxian 3.0 is a nostalgic classic to me, means that rthro will be a nostalgic classic to the future generation
I actually think it'll fade into obscurity as avatars improve beyond it. I can't really see anyone feeling nostalgic for it considering that barely anyone ever uses it unironically

I think you might be looking into it too hard. Roblox stands for robot blocks, meaning that (in my interpretation) the faces drawn on the robots you play as are probably just drawn on. I think Roblox had forgotten about that abbreviation with the introduction of rthro, though.

This is very true, there are some popular faces but the ones that are absolutely forgettable range from " Wait that existed? " to " WHAT IS THIS ".

The faces of the Homestead winners are embedded in their characters' file/model as a base64 image. Back then, custom decals were stored in the decal instance itself and not as an asset in the CDN. you said it yourself in the video, the guy didnt use a 2007 client though, he simply downloaded the model's file, opened it in a text editor, copied the base64 into a decoder and turned it into an image lol

@@joekyu2517 i dont think so. the way their avatars were customized is that they literally loaded a different model in place of their character. and that probably doesnt work anymore
One thing that I think is important now at least is the animated faces because they still have the nice cartoony style but they aren't as you said "locked into one expression" or something like that.

In roblox studio i learned that avatars are made of plastic (thanks to rigs) so they are toys or robots.

I think they're trying to replicate royale highs faces. But the thing is, its apart of the style of the game so they blend in nicely with the body types. But with the lego cartoony style doesn't look proportioned rightly in comparison to the tall, lanky super modle look of royale high

I actually agree with all of this, they make the worst type of faces and right now they are making too much realistic faces for events and toys. I wish they started making more normal faces.

9:22 The sarge extreme face was made by the people behind the 2012 april Fools hacking incident (during the incident). Roblox simply didn't remote the face. They just hid it by making it offsale, or just forgot about it, i dont really know. Other than that,the video is very good and well worked.

Roblox did a fantastic job at creating those classic faces as it makes you feel like your in a different world but in a good way, That's why the community loves them.

This happened to me once except it wasn't the same face and the toy does show the face before you claim it. I received the toy as a gift for 5 bucks as a birthday present. When I opened it, I was sad to see it was for girls and not for boys, because I'm a boy. So since my mum has a Roblox account, I claimed the code in her account.

Dude its faces for a child's game. I understand that its weird that they don't have a nose, but neither do some cartoon characters. I think you might be over thinking it a bit, although I will say, I agree with you in the last part of the new faces section, and everything past the cat eye section. Keep up the good work!

Speaking from a development standpoint, how faces work is also kind of weird. T-shirts, accessories, shirts, and pants, all have their own object types based on how you want to apply them to the character. The face is literally just a decal. Using scripts, you can move it around on the player's head, and do funny stuff like place it on the wrong part of their head. Like the back. The game will neither notice, or for that matter, care, because it's just a decal.
You don't need a script to place it behind the head or whatever.
About the faces, When roblox added decals, every t-shirt was copied, their catalog ID was subtracted by one and then became a decal at the very end. this is why the 1000001st catalog item is a t-shirt version of the 1000000th item. just a crazy idea that is very incorrect
on a more related note, if you played a free build game back in the day with an alphabet free model, you would notice the zero is different look than the 1-9. when you put the free model in roblox studio and look at the 1-9 decal you can find out that it was actually used for the score board in the miked paintball tournament event. and if you add 1 to the catalog id, you get a t-shirt!
I actually know this trick and have used it to rip the templates of several old offsale and/or expensive pieces of clothing in the past. Don't tell anyone ;)

Isn’t the Sarge Extreme face because of the April Fools 2012 hack thing? I thought the other faces were too. I don’t see Roblox actually uploading a graphic face to the website though.
I think I’ve heard that Roblox wants to animate your avatars face when you talk, so they’ll finally express (some) emotion now. If it gets implemented I think the bubblegum would still somehow stay.
I don’t think there’s a perfect balance between a cartoony and realistic face on Roblox that everyone would like, I can’t think of one at least.
I just remembered the “Uncanny valley” Roblox users hated in 2018, which used very realistic faces on Roblox avatars, which fell into the uncanny valley.
I’ve faced mighty tribulations deciding which face is worthy to use on my avatar, so I should get Headless this October.
I like the faces Cadi and Miked chose for their avatar. I would definitely buy them if they were onsale. I’m pretty sure Roblox used to have a lot more onsale faces and heads back then, but they were taken offsale for some reason before I started making good avatars on Roblox.
Tangentially related: I love finding nice items on the catalog just like one of the faces I saw on the video (Crank and Zap Mech) just to find out they’re only obtainable through a Roblox toy.

The sarge extreme face wasn't made from Roblox. It was made by one of the hackers during the 2012 Incident where an admin account was gotten into. I'm not sure why it is still even on the website but it is there.
Okay, hear me out, the only face that isn't weird (in my opinion) is the stare.
It's just the neutral face that people make almost 24/7, probably you are doing the stare face rn.

Fun fact: The roblox faces weren't intended to have oval eyes at first. When they added the default smiley face, it ended up getting stretched to fit onto the head shape, resulting in oval eyes. Since players got used to it, they decided to stick to the oval shaped eyes.
