Everything about the Wii’s marketing was genius. It’s something that a console hasn’t captured since and probably never will. Completely blew the market open for a new audience while being fresh and new for existing gamers. Switch has come close to that “wow” factor, but the Wii I remember thinking was something truly special. Great times.
@@vojtasjedyny I'm thinking more of the initial push. Once 2008 rolled around, they'd settled in a bit too comfortably. E3 2008 and 2009 weren't very good, but 2010 was a lot better and showed off the last big hoorah before the ill-fated Wii U. Nintendo dominated despite their lacking E3's for those couple years though. Talking mostly in terms of the casual market. For the hardcore gamers, yeah it was a disappointing couple years for sure.
A lot of people were skeptical about the Wii until they realized it was actually becoming a massive seller and began to think of how it appealed to so many people who had never played a video game before. Nintendo played it perfectly all along though. Post-launch had its ups and downs, but the first year of the console going into winter 2007, with Brawl on the horizon and the craze fully on, you could tell something special was going on. It's not surprising to me at all that it was the best selling console of its generation. Plus, much like the DS, the Wii eventually revealed itself to have something for everyone once you were deep enough into the console's lifespan. I speculate that the Wii U was basically a stopgap/replacement for the Switch because they didn't have the technology to accomplish it on a consumer level, but honestly, they could have almost not even come out with a new console and just kept supporting the Wii. It would have been one generation too early, but maybe a "Wii Pro" with HD compatibility and some kind of heavily-pushed optional Gamepad accessory would have been enough to tide people over until 2017. But, hindsight's 20/20. The Wii U as a entirely separate console and its library didn't click with anyone because it didn't do the best things it did well enough and it didn't really appeal well to anyone besides hardcore Nintendo fans.
Yea the Wii dominated the world. At least that’s how I felt it was as a kid. The Wii wasn’t as powerful as the 360 and PS3 but yet it was so much popular I’d say. “If all you want is next generation, you’re in the wrong place…..it’s what’s absolutely new”. And two decades later they kept it up with the Switch. Now look at all the follower handhelds we’ve gotten. Which has been great for gaming in general. Love the Switch!
5:44 I liked to use that function back in those days, specially Smash where you can hear the selected character's presentation (only available for this), and the Wii Pikmin games (probably the ones which looked like they were born for this console) for the swarm tune... I can't remember if the whistle used the speakers, but if does the president one is hilarious.
Digan lo que digan Nintendo wii la recibi a los 15 años y me dio años de magia y diversion jamas compre la nintendo wii u hasta ahora me compre la nintendo switch ♥
There have been few electronic products which have gained as much momentum as the wii. Everything from several different TV programs that showed off the wii, to the fact that wii accessories took up large sections in grocery sections to gaming stores. Then the Wii was the console that was very common to see in people's homes. And even at some festivals. However, when the wii started to fall into the category of retro, it became extremely common to see the wii at a garage sale
The Wii has had a good run. Let's commemorate some great games such as: - New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Donkey Kong Country Returns - Super Mario Galaxy - Legend Of Zelda Skyward Sword - Kirby's Epic Yarn - Super Smash Bros Brawl - Metroid Prime 3 - Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Kirby's Return To Dreamland - Mario Kart Wii - Mad World (or whatever) - Wii Sports Resort (whatever) - Barbie's Horse Adventure (jk) - Super Paper Mario (kinda sucky) Let it's fresh young sibling the Wii U shine on and abandon the casual market!
***** This is why Nintendo is still superior to other game companies ... At least they try to innovate the gameplay since the Wii with motion control and WiiU with 2 screens (DS is a bit different because it's portable) and motion control, there are 3 ways to play a game on WiiU, and only 1 with other systems (the regular controller ...), plus some hackers try to make gamecube games to work on WiiU. So that's a plus. And what other 'new' system brings ? Just a few megahertz in their CPU and GPU ... for $600, the 'next-gen shit' is a real scam and seems inexistant in most of games. But people don't like Nintendo because they made underpowered console, which is bullshit for me, even if it is underpowered, it have the greatest hit of all time, and fun games.
@ Rafael Lopez: I hope you don't mind if I add some (not all exclusive): - Red Steel 1&2 - The Conduit 1&2 - Metroid Prime Trilogy - Metroid Other M (bad Metroid game, but great game in general) - Donkey Kong JungleBeat (easily better version because of full control) - Okami - Mario Strikers Charged Football - Resident Evil 4 (best version along with Ultimate HD Edition) - Resident Evil Umbrella Chr. & Darkside Chronicles - Dead Space Extraction - House of the Dead Overkill - No More Heroes 1&2 - Batman The Brave and the Bold - Mario Party 8 (9 sucked somewhat due to mostly being luck based, but has these new great Boss battles) - Wii Party - Boom Blox 1&2 - ExciteTrucks & ExciteBots - Silent Hill Shattered Memories - Cursed Mountain (heavily underrated) - Deadly Creatures (just unique) - Disaster Day of Crisis (unique gameplay) - Wario Land The Shake Dimension - A boy and his blob - Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers (better than the first one imo) - The Last Story - Pandoras Tower - Xenoblade Chronicles - GoldenEye 007 - Muramasa The Demon Blade - Sin and Punishment 2 - Zak & Wiki - A Shadows Tale Additionally good ports like Project Zero 2, Scarface, DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3, etc.
***** That's not really what I intended to say, all consoles have exclusivities, they're all good systems, with good games. But Nintendo was a part of my childhood, a thing that Sony (except PS1) and Micro$oft wasn't. That's why, for me, they're always kicking ass
iZephiirES I hope you're right and Wii U will have more sales than XBox One. I also hope Nintendo will deliver more core games for the console and support games like Shadow of the Eternals. Reviving StarFox and F-Zero is also a must-do.
the 7th gen of gaming was by far the best; you had the HD twins the 360 and PS3, and you had innovation and something completely different: the Wii, sadly this gaming generation isn't that exciting anymore
??? Dude switch is literally every Nintendo console fused in one. Handheld, home console or motion controls are there. This is one of the most innovative consoles. Ps4/5 and Xbox are still similar to ps3 and 360 just with better hardware. Games also are really good with a lot of indie game titles gaining more popularity and growing easier. This is probably one of the best gaming generation
Agree 7th gen laid the foundation for many of the bad business practices which became standard during 8-9th gen. However gaming vice saw 7th gen very strong with many cult classics which still get remakes today.
Definitely feel the same way. I was in my mid 20's when they all released. So I bought them all. Don't think my ex was a fan of my getting all three? But, our son and I loved them. And still do. Play my 350, Wii and PS3 as much or, even slightly more. Than my Switch and Series X. The 7th gen was (and is) the best! Giving us countless great games. That didn't require online to play. But, made it an added way to play if you liked? You could play offline/online..local multiplayer or system link. Plus of course online. Games came out way more complete upon release. Not that many had paywalls, microtransactions etc...Games were actually on the discs! They didn't require installing before playing. Except like Destiny, COD Ghost. Games didn't need constant updates. Which take up bigaount of your harddrive space. Games had manuals and many collector editions. Pre orders were great. Coming with special little bonuses.
The 360 and PS3 had very distinct exclusives and experiences. Calling them "HD twins" is a disservice. That aside you're right about 7th gen being superior and this console generation sucking ass. Woke politics forced on the player, ugly female characters to appease feminists, microtransactions up the ass and the emphasis on subscription services have ruined gaming.
@@JB-fd8jy Switch is great but it doesn't have a proper virtual console where they allow you to purchase classic retro games, and for a while the library was reliant on Wii U ports. Things have improved since then but now Nintendo is starting to double dip again with older games like Super Mario RPG, Metroid Prime Remastered and Paper Mario Thousand Year Door. Indie games have been around and awesome since 7th gen btw. The Vita was my go-to machine for stuff like Hotline Miami, Lone Survivor, Velocity Ultra etc. The point you're missing is that AAA titles from all 3 companies were *far* better back then. Today the market is flooded with re-releases, re-imaginings and sequels. Sure, you may have more games available now than ever but we're talking about a lack of quality new releases. People are more enthusiastic to play remakes of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space in 2023 than something like Starfield.

“If all you want is next generation, you’re in the wrong place…..it’s what’s absolutely new”. And two decades later they kept it up with the Switch. Now look at all the follower handhelds we’ve gotten. Which has been great for gaming in general. Love the Switch!
So secret rings had both the names "Sonic Wild Fire" and "Hyper Sonic" in this one conference.
3:36 *cough* Watchdogs *cough*

+Hardin Twentyfive kkk
Hardin Twentyfive This came out years before
Cordex
You're missing them point
I remember that guy in the trailer who jumps out from behind the chair playing Metroid Prime. These were good times.
I suddenly feel nostalgic for a childhood I never had.
Watching this to prepare for E3 2018! Can't wait to see Smash Bros.!
And it was amazing.
I miss e3
Wiiチャンネル、VCコンソール、SDカード。本当に一つ一つのキーワードが懐かしい。
it's 2024 and we still waiting for the next console after nintendo switch :D
There have been few electronic products which have gained as much momentum as the wii.
Everything from several different TV programs that showed off the wii, to the fact that wii accessories took up large sections in grocery sections to gaming stores. Then the Wii was the console that was very common to see in people's homes. And even at some festivals.
However, when the wii started to fall into the category of retro, it became extremely common to see the wii at a garage sale
I miss the e3 presentations like this
Still do :(
hmm the first 28 seconds sound like the start up tune from the old PS3
It was
Dakeem Parks yeah im not the only one ;p
+TheONLYONE SO YES
You realise this is what tuning instruments before a concert sounds like, right?
Yup, symphony orchestras have been ripping off the PS3 start up tune for centuries.
The Wii was a game changer
R.I.P E3
gotta love that static in my left ear
The Wii has had a good run. Let's commemorate some great games such as:
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Legend Of Zelda Skyward Sword
- Kirby's Epic Yarn
- Super Smash Bros Brawl
- Metroid Prime 3
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Kirby's Return To Dreamland
- Mario Kart Wii
- Mad World (or whatever)
- Wii Sports Resort (whatever)
- Barbie's Horse Adventure (jk)
- Super Paper Mario (kinda sucky)
Let it's fresh young sibling the Wii U shine on and abandon the casual market!
@ Rafael Lopez:
I hope you don't mind if I add some (not all exclusive):
- Red Steel 1&2
- The Conduit 1&2
- Metroid Prime Trilogy
- Metroid Other M (bad Metroid game, but great game in general)
- Donkey Kong JungleBeat (easily better version because of full control)
- Okami
- Mario Strikers Charged Football
- Resident Evil 4 (best version along with Ultimate HD Edition)
- Resident Evil Umbrella Chr. & Darkside Chronicles
- Dead Space Extraction
- House of the Dead Overkill
- No More Heroes 1&2
- Batman The Brave and the Bold
- Mario Party 8 (9 sucked somewhat due to mostly being luck based, but has these new great Boss battles)
- Wii Party
- Boom Blox 1&2
- ExciteTrucks & ExciteBots
- Silent Hill Shattered Memories
- Cursed Mountain (heavily underrated)
- Deadly Creatures (just unique)
- Disaster Day of Crisis (unique gameplay)
- Wario Land The Shake Dimension
- A boy and his blob
- Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers (better than the first one imo)
- The Last Story
- Pandoras Tower
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- GoldenEye 007
- Muramasa The Demon Blade
- Sin and Punishment 2
- Zak & Wiki
- A Shadows Tale
Additionally good ports like Project Zero 2, Scarface, DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3, etc.
***** That's not really what I intended to say, all consoles have exclusivities, they're all good systems, with good games.
But Nintendo was a part of my childhood, a thing that Sony (except PS1) and Micro$oft wasn't. That's why, for me, they're always kicking ass
iZephiirES
I hope you're right and Wii U will have more sales than XBox One. I also hope Nintendo will deliver more core games for the console and support games like Shadow of the Eternals. Reviving StarFox and F-Zero is also a must-do.
***** ps4 also not just xbox
now you're holding the steering wheel of a big damn truck
Iwata's speech sounds like a TED talk, R.I.P. king
the 7th gen of gaming was by far the best; you had the HD twins the 360 and PS3, and you had innovation and something completely different: the Wii, sadly this gaming generation isn't that exciting anymore
Agree
7th gen laid the foundation for many of the bad business practices which became standard during 8-9th gen.
Everyone was into this, and fucking no one likes the Wii U... God damn what a market.
Oliver Adam now they not because the online service for the wii is dead
“What you see is not always what you get“
That is embarrassingly true
SUPER MARIOOOOOOO GALAXYYYYY!!!!!! 👨
I’m reading Disrupting The Game.
Reggie is incredibly talented and this era of Nintendo was fun to see.
RIP Iwata.
"Seeing is just an impression, playing is believing..." still true to this generation. Nice closing speech from Reggie.
Reggie always touching his tips
Iceskimo stage anxiety in a nutshell
I miss Reggie talking like a beast and dropping bombs, as well as these presentations

2006 ah nostalgia
2019 Arhe.
we’re gonna miss you Reggie!!!!
the only time reggie describes the controls of the never released project hammer.
Growing up this was my first introduction to e3. I was so hyped and telling my parents I want to go to e3 to see all the new crazy games that I would play. Growing up I realize how useless this was and won’t miss it anymore.
I miss E3 as a whole, already... :(
change is good unless you're microsoft EA or activision
7:09 Steve sure did get a redesign...
They use parts from Dvoraks Cello concerto for the intro 👌🏻 It's the best instrumental concerto and Nintendo knows that 😂👍🏻
Nintendo at their most creative era 🔥
Who else is watching this in 2017? ... :O Dang, has it been really 11 years??
I SAW A BLUE MII JUST LIKE IN WII PLAY'S UNUSED COW MODEL

The Nintendo Wii is still one of my favorite game system's.
Hello. Good afternoon. My name is Brian López. What is your favorite Nintendo Wii game of all time? Please let me know in the comments down below.
RIP Iwata
I remember watching this online. Those days are over. RUclips and internet being mainstream killed in person presentations. Also killed buy game once and that’s it model. Now milk money and live service rubbish. I wanna go back to the golden years. Before the dark times, before 2013.
They didn’t even mention the game cube and games were still coming out for this thing in 2006
Funny enough I’ve never seen Nintendo’s e3 2006 livestream I was almost 8 when e3 2006 happened I’m 24 now god I feel old cuz I remember the hype for the wii… you couldn’t find a wii anywhere for the first 2-3 years!!! Im glad this will forever be on the internet, well as long as humans are still here to inhabit the universe.
