  • On March 5, 2022, a series of strong supercell thunderstorms brought multiple tornados to Iowa. The following video is of the Winterset/Newton tornado traveling ENE crossing Highway 163 at NE 112th Street (41.6005877, -93.3668449), or ~5 miles East of Des Moines and Pleasant Hill, Iowa. This long-track rain-wrapped EF-4 wedge tornado was a half mile wide, traveled almost 70 miles across Madison, Warren, Polk, and Jasper counties, and produced winds of nearly 170 mph at its peak. According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the Winterset/Newton wedge tornado had the second-longest path length in Iowa since June 1980.
The first part of this video looks southwest towards Highway 163 from the intersection of NE Reynolds Way and NE 96th Street (41.608529, -93.406521). At NE Reynolds Way and NE 96th Street, the rain-wrapped tornado was about 3 miles away, traveling at 45 mph to the ENE. Realizing my window for escape was closing quickly, I drove a half-mile back towards Highway 163, closing the distance to the tornado to about 2.2 miles. I had thought about escaping North, but I felt that would have taken me deeper into hail/rain and limited my speed East to 45 mph on NE 23rd Avenue versus 65+ mph on Highway 163.
At the stop sign, the tornado was approximately 3.62 miles away from crossing Highway 163 at NE 112th Street. Driving East on Highway 163, I stopped briefly at NE 120th Street (41.601118, -93.348708). I decided to move when I saw how close I was to the tornado (~1/2 mile). If you look closely, you can see the edge of the tornado crossing a hill and small bits of debris going down the street.
The last location in this video is looking North from West 132nd Street and Highway 163 (41.601707, -93.328654). The Winterset/Newton tornado was completely obscured by rain at this location. You can see a bit of anticyclonic rotation in the clouds above as I turn North on West 132nd Street.
My deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones and suffered damage to property during this severe weather event.
