The alien chord on the first syllable of 'verum' ('true') is believed to be a subtle hint by Byrd that the bread given at the Mass is the TRUE (i.e. transubstantiated) body of Christ. If he had said such a blasphemous, Papist, thing at the time he would probably have lost his head.
Wonderful insight, thank you! But I beg to differ about the head loss threat. He probably wouldn't, I believe. Byrd was openly a Catholic, so it must have been assumed by anyone who knew and cared about theology that he must have believed in the doctrine of transsubstantion. Queen Elizabeth, although a devout Protestant herself, was very fond of Byrd and was keen to be as mild to Catholics as possible, as long as they did not do anything that smelled of rebellion. It was probably still wise not to be too loud about Catholic doctrines, I agree, but at this point in time, professing Catholic faith openly would not have been on itself life threatening.
What beauty, in these sick times! Thank you!
Beautiful!
Westminster Cathedral Choir recordings of the Byrd Mass are truly worth a listen and repeated listening!!

This is a most interesting comment. Crippling to think in hindsight yet the choral work he wrote is still exquisite
