I find it so cool how Shrek was once a dark and edgy movie that some Dreamworks employees had to miserably work on and now, it got turned into this beautiful movie that everybody loves.
I can definitely see how this would have been a misery to work on at the time.
@@Nick_works It was literally a punishment to work on shrek, If you messed up on a bit of animation you would be punished by having to work on shrek lol
its called "Getting Shrek'd"
universal ruined it. the original dark edgy shrek is the best

I can tell the people who are apart of Lost Media are going have a field day with this
I am already
@@ModwalletOFFICIAL Are you one of them?
@@MrRuePine
Yes!
The amount of reposts of the video is CRAZY
This has been out I thought the full thing was gonna b longer:(
Thank you Barry. Even if your vision wasn’t realized, it was the stepping stone to getting the film and the studio as a whole what it is today.
That's a nice way to look at it.
We need a Shrek 5 where the mugger returns for his revenge.
Yes
Yes
This should be shreak five as a tribute to Chris and his contribution to the role or maybe a fan film
It really sucks people lost their jobs cause of this test. It's clear it has alot of passion behind it, and for 1995 the animation is REALLY smooth and expressive! The team was also just doing what they were told after all. It's not perfect, but it's got a nice charm to it
Fascinante!
I was under the impression that it was standard HR job-losing. You don't really lose jobs over tech demos alone.
Yeah, they got exactly what they asked for. A dark and edgy ogre movie. It’s not their fault. I wish they were just told to re-create the film with the softer features instead of getting fired
@@cesarbjhI was am a kid but I’m not afraid of this shrek
Not only did we get to see long sought after footage, but because of this man we also got the pleasure of learning the history behind it. Thank you very much Barry!!!
Bro I’m gonna fart on you for saying that
@@Monkforilla Do you not agree with what I said or are you just being obnoxious?

What is your pfp? I recognize it but I don't remember what it's from
@@cougar19 It used to be the icon for Etika’s channel EWNetwork, but after his channel was removed and he took his own life, people started to use the icon to honor/remember him. I use to frequently tune into his streams, he was my favorite streamer at the time.
I'm glad the footage was found. Barry did say that he immediately resurfaced the Animation Test recorded with Quicktime Player from like a VHS Tape, but the audio input isn't the best to recover.
The people behind the original shrek did a really good job with the concept they were given. It wouldn't be as successful as the shrek we got but I think it would've turned out to be a good film
universal ruined it. the original dark edgy shrek is the best
@@wickedhouston5538 Universal didn't buy Dreamworks until over a decade after Shrek was released. So how did they ruin it? Also, cringe.
@@wickedhouston5538fr
@@wickedhouston5538 we only have snippets and ideas of that concept, I don't think we have enough to definitely say it would've been better.
@@wickedhouston5538yea I liked the early shrek
95 Shrek felt good so that 01 Shrek could become an all star! Thank you Barry Jackson for perserving the original test animation and contributing to a cgi animated movie masterpiece.
I definitely agree that Jackson's art was much nicer than the test animation, the key art of Shrek shaking hands with the mugger especially looks gorgeous. I really hope that for the 25th anniversary or something DreamWorks releases more of this production stuff, more of the Farley version of the movie. I always loved the weirder, darker Shrek stuff, like all those scrapped ideas that were used in the XBOX game.
I would of loved seeing the dark atmosphere mixed with the goofy characters. The concept art looks so cool
I agree!
Unfortunately Chris Farley did a drug overdose
I feel it would've been received as Antz where it's a edgy, dark animated comedy that's vaguely remembered over time, but the atmosphere, the colors and character design would've looked so ugly and unpleasant that a problem, even back then, would be a little put off by.
Antz is a good comparison. The test footage does have the same sort of feel to it.
Lots of people are hating on it but I actually really like the old Shrek design. The concept art at 3:27 has so much personality, a graphic novel or comic in that style would be awesome.
It's not hating.
Old design is creepy.
I think personally that the storyboard arts of the OG Shrek aren't nearly as creepy as the CG test. It's probably the lack of detail in the art, where the mind fills in the blanks, rather than the creepy details the CG gives.
What a thrilling way to conclude the story and search, makes me wonder how different the world would be if they went forward with the original look
It's fascinating to wonder what the original edgy shrek would have been like, for the little story he shared it seemed like decently good low budget title
Super cool to see a first hand account on the super early stages of the movie. While it sucks to lose the original vision, what we got is pretty great too. Props to Barry and the team for setting the groundwork
Genuinely, thank you all so much for sharing this test with the world. Almost a decade of searching for it.
"other copies on youtube" HOLD UP that means that there were and maybe are still videos with the full test footage and maybe chris farley's audio
There's probably some obscure RUclips channel with 1 subscriber that has it but hasn't been discovered yet.
im pretty sure he meant the partially found clips.
I mean one snippets was found in Loren Soman's Reel
Wow, Barry Jackson's original designs are so much better than the test, I like Shrek but I'd like to see a Barry Jackson version too.
Barry E. Jackson is a legend!
Thank you Barry and his team now eveyone can see and enjoy the original concept for Shrek. It sucks how they lost their job they should've been kept on the project as you can see their passion and thank you Barry for uploading it.
It really sucks that Barry and his team had to lose their role in Shrek just because the studio wanted to go a different direction. I think anyone who worked at that stage of production should know that they walked so Shrek could run, and be proud of their contribution to its legacy.
It is quite obvious they did the right decision. Shrek would not be the same if they had changed him even the slightest as to how he is now. He would be too fucking obnoxious. Props to those dreamworks execs.
@@bigge1002 universal ruined it. the original dark edgy shrek is the best
@@bigge1002 we have no way of telling, given the movie was never made. Based on the test animation though, it looks like it'd be a fun fantasy film. Still, aiming to please a broader audience was probably the right call for Dreamworks, especially at the time
@@begottenbaker there is a way of telling, look at movies like coraline or tim burton's halloween. All follow the same dark edgy theme. They're not bad movies, but Shrek would probably just be one of the bunch instead of the beloved part of our childhood that it is today
@@bigge1002You made a really good point that I didn't consider. But I also think Shrek success came more from the storytelling elements and character development than the brightness of the world or character design. Also, I think 3D was relatively new in the late 90s early 00s and that also would have sparked more interest in it too if it were to have a similar release date as the one we know.
Random thing but props to Barry for creating arguably the greatest video game cover art of all time with Wasteland
oh heck, he did the cover art for Wasteland? I love that cover.
Thanks
Barry has a good point on how ahead of its time the face animations are.
We need dreamworks to make a new shred movie with this guy, old art style, everything
I love the random Shrek jumpscares sprinkled throughout the video 😂
Honestly I'd like to see this vision coming to life, not because i think it would be better or anything like that. It just would be fun to get this scrapped vision a group of people had for Shrek getting revived.
This is amazing. Learning about the early stages of any animated production is amazing, but especially such an iconic one.
8:49 damn shrek sure does have a dumpey
This lost old "beta" version of Shrek is so interesting to me. It's dark, weird and creepy but also cool. I would like to see something with this style, more stuff from this era. It's just a different tone but that makes it very interesting.
i personaly wouldnt mind seeing barry his vision of the shrek movie getting made, would love to see an different take on shrek.
I like how they put all star at the end
The Shrek rabbit hole is so deep. He really got his original vision denied.
Absolutely amazing! Thank you Barry for sharing this amazing piece of animation history. Keep on doing amazing work!
I'd like to imagine the shrek franchise may get rebooted specifically because of the interest in your short film garnered over the years... the same short film that helped shape Shrek into what he turned into. That's kind of endearing, in a way. That the short film you worked on years ago would help shape the next generation of Shrek also. Tysvm for sharing the test video with us all and giving us more insight into it's development!
I was always think that there would be a Shrek Prequel with the details given as far as the third movie like where did Shrek come from and how is he the only Ogre we ever see in his timeline. Good content to go off of.
@Labyrinth6000 while that would be a fun idea, I personally think DreamWorks is likely going to soft reboot the franchise rather than continue it as it is. Shrek's got kids now, Prince Charming is a powerless/out of the picture, that Charles kid rules far far away now, and donkey even has children. They're kind of outta threats unless they pull another random rumpel stiltskein out of their arse. If they were to continue the franchise it would likely feel messy & hard to work on since there's so many characters to work with now. I just hope that if they do reboot the franchise, they look back to the 1995 test demo as a reference to learn from like the former shrek team did.
I don't know if this would even be possible or not but it would be cool to have an easter egg of 1996 Shrek maybe alongside with the mugger maybe in a future Shrek movie
It would’ve been a nice touch if his wanted posters still looked like the original
I can see why Shrek a punishment for DreamWorks animators 😂
Thank you for all the sleepless nights 🙏
There’s an alternative timeline out there where the public would’ve gotten Chris Farleys Shrek adaptation in 1999 rather than the initial 2001 movie.
Worse timeline. Farleys death would mean no shrek franchise.
@@rissyroono
No? His death resulted in the franchise
@@rissyroonohe’s saying in this timeline the movie gets finished and Farley doesn’t die
This is one of the biggest win for lost media just below the Sesame Street Witch episode released this year.
The concept art is amazing
the sculpt based facial animation sounds like a really interesting work flow, it's too bad that wasn't explored further. I can think of other examples of something similar as computer animated special effects in live action movies, but not in an animated feature.
what was the point of removing the video unless copyright reasons?
i was about to comment this
Yes, what happened?
Thank you Mr Barry i appreciate your design and vision for animation
Excellent work Barry and thank you for mentoring my generation so graciously and selflessly. We're blessed to have you brother 🫶🫶🫶
Thank you kindly
Shrek is love, shrek is life
Thank you so much for your work Barry
It would be sweet if for shrek 5 they atleast have the test footage shrek and bandit guy in it but as an easter egg or somethin, and to have the song feel good in a part of the movie too
Apparently Jeffrey Katzenberg's First Choice to voice Shrek was Bill Murray
Oh, this is just wonderful, thank you so much for bring this work to public light.
The world wasn't ready for Hobo Shrek
It would be interesting to see a Shrek movie with this design & scene since ppl have already seen the completed design 😄
I don’t know how they landed this interview but dang. This is pretty darn interesting! The meme community is gonna love this 😂
Thank you so much for this!
I'm so sad that he lost his job during the production :(
I really enjoy the video. Thank you so much about history of Shrek Test Footage
Glad this test was finally released and that Mr Jackson gave this wonderful insight about it.
There are so many more stories like this that I'm sure we'd all love to hear.
I really enjoyed watching this interview and your narration,
now Mr Barry, the truth is we all thank you for publishing the Shrek animation test And make him stop being a Lost media, I admire All the effort you put into this.
I have been saying this for 3 years and a small part of me surely also said the same thing.
Despite the whole thing, I don't know why but I would like them to ever make another Shrek movie but with the story that it would originally be and that was very different from the Shrek that all of us and Our family knows.
Although I would also confirm that they make a small reference to the old Shrek
Thank you again for making it so that we can all die in peace knowing the complete animation of feel good Mr Barry 👍
Shrek is and will always be a legendary classic family fun film.
I wonder why they had to lose their jobs, and not be asked to redesign the character
history is being made
Its rather fitting, that in year where we've lost Steve Harwell. The lead singer of the band Smash Mouth. Is also the same year a peice of lost Shrek History was found.
ok but this page is amazing? Barry has some of the most beautiful art pieces i've ever seen also. Such an amazing video!
why did you private it
this was probably going an ok movie
Looks like it originally had more of a Nightmare Before Christmas aesthetic.
The fact that you can lose your job because you create a test animation that people didnt like, is just sad, i think it kills creativity. Come on, its just a test, they did what you told them to do!
The place was running wild with the fear of failure. Prince of Egypt and El Dorado were not keeping up with times
thank you so much Barry
Amazing! Barry you are a legend!
I would absolutely love a short film version of this original shrek
Super happy this was found.
At least we've found it, and it's awesome to know.
beautiful interview, it is a trophy for the lost media content and stuff, btw im the 140th like ^^
The mugger needs to appear in a future Shrek movie!
why did the shrek test animation get deleted?
Nah it's been privated
i wish we could've had this version
Why test animacion get private?
Releasing the shrek test was an awesome way to promote the zoom art classes
The timing of Shrek's release would of made the dark edgy Shrek just fall flat on it's face. I would love to see the original story of Shrek told. I love what dreamworks did but why not tell a story like it is for once lol
This was one of the first movies I ever saw. I was about 9 at the time and it was with my grandpa. Man I almost can remember that moment. I miss him and us watching that movie the first time together. He raised me so he was dad for all I cared you know? Thanks for triggering this memory for me
Have you made plans to do a 4k restoration of the Shrek 1996 Pilot tape if so when?
When you describe the facial animation, it sounds like an technique called Vertex Animation.
Artists were still using handmade 3D sculptures scanned with digitizer wands in this era, if i've done my homework right. It sounds like you scanned in multiple sculptures, to use as the shapes in the vertex animation. Is this accurate to what was done, or am I misunderstanding? Thanks.
Hearing this makes me interested in the rest of Barry's story. Whether he was fired from Dreamworks or just shuffled to another project and what else he was involved with in his career.
My IG @barry.e.jackson will tell you a lot.
Fired out the door
@@TheZoomArtStudio and your revenge was los gringos?
honestly i actually like original design more than the final one when i was young the final one gave me the uncanny valley
Is this gonna show more test footage
Amazing stuff about the development of the Shrek movie. Darker Shrek movie is quite the concept.
Y'all should release this for a movie
Is that the original audio?
Now that the test has been found, _I Feel Good_
It would have been interesting to see the pilot version of the movie
well atleast it looks better than the movies we got nowdays, i'm pretty sure i would love to see this shrek movie, sadly we can't get to see a full thing... maybe another time?
I wish i could see this shrek movie
I have no idea why they discarded the test. It looks amazing.
even if shrek went on this path I think I'd still like the movie
Finally!
Wow this footage is famous
Very cool Barry!
this is history
the fact that the original team was fired for doing what they told to do is crazy
Whoa, This is really interesting!
You should've ask him how did Loren somann got the test tho
