    I went to see and listen to Tony Benn at my local town hall 30 years ago. He was inspirational. He said all the things I believed in and I felt comforted that I agreed with everything the great man said.
    Then... At the end he said that if you feel happy because I've said everything you wanted to hear and you do nothing about it, I've wasted my time.
    I was crestfallen, because I knew I couldn't give enough time to the cause.
    I was too busy working hard to feed my family. I regret it to this day.

      "Destroyed the UK"
      My god, another one with his head up his backside.
      You agree with a society then there a select few prosper and most don't? A society where we have 5.4 million on poverty wages, 13 million below the poverty line, 1.9 million unemployed, 1 million youth unemployed and the likes of the elderly who cannot afford to keep themselves warm each winter because they have to choose between that and eating (they can't afford both) - in the mean time the likes of British Gas boast profits of £595 million (maggie deregulation), taking the profit abroad to avoid paying tax.
      Further still you have countless millions relying on food banks and 800k living off £10 a month.
      On the other side of the coin you have corruption in parliament, decadence, lies, deceit, public asset sell off and people running a mock with our money in the city, causing crashes to the detriment of us all because Maggie deregulated the industry. Then you have Vodafone getting away without paying £30 million in corporation tax along with Amazon, Boots, Iceland, Next, Google, to name a few.
      All of this is good in your eyes, yes? The last 30 years of right wing policy have really been something to write home about, haven't they?
      RIP Tony Benn.

      Labour introduced the company merger act which forced the UK car industry into nationalization. What this done was force good auto companies into mergers with bad and this then bankrupted them costing over 3 million jobs.
      When Thatcher came to power unemployment was at 11% and inflation was at 25% and the UK was living of vapour loans from the IMF.
      Can you address these points directly please and stop with the name calling.

      Thatcher saved the UK.
      When she took over the UK was on the point of bankruptcy and the communist unions where trying their best to destroy the UK economy.
      She create more jobs and saved the UK. Why would you try and denounce this. Do you believe in your politics that much that you would just do this.

    • @Valiordruid
      @Valiordruid 10 лет назад +4

      bighands69 No she didn't. She was the UK's Reagan.
      Under her, Britain went from being a country that exported more to imported more goods in their 2000 year history. Income inequality soared under her with tax cuts for the rich. She destroyed multiple industries, especially steel, coal and cars. She sold state assets worth billions for a fraction of what they were worth.

    • @teehee1604
      @teehee1604 10 лет назад +1

      ***** The steel and coal industries were on their way out anyway thanks to the availability of imports at around a 10th of the price. Once containerised shipping made everything more efficient, it became infinitely cheaper to import. Then there's the fact that the unions were so anti-progress that the industries became a complete drain on the tax-payers!
      The car industry is another matter, whoever the hell thought it would be a good idea for that to be nationalised in the first place should have been in a straight jacket! Our cars were a joke, so nobody bought them, so the industry lost money, which meant job-cuts, which, thanks to the unions again, meant strikes. Strikes further diminished productivity, causing the industry to die an even swifter death!
      If you want to look at who to blame, look at the previous labour government, who invested far too much money into dying industries!

    • @Halebopp97
      @Halebopp97 9 лет назад +2

      bighands69 "When she took over the UK was on the point of bankruptcy and the communist unions"
      "Communist unions" - that's this guy talking about? Never heard of a "communist union" before. Please explain this.
      Funny thing about bankruptcy, because it was her very deregulation policies which allowed the banking industry to run a mock with our money bringing us to the financial crash of '08. Today we have more debt than we've ever been in (again thanks to her deregulation of the financial industry). Now millions suffer at the hands of her legacy.

      +Ned Lightowlers It is quite remarkable the parallels. Corbyn's push for greater party democracy was a lifelong mission of Tony Benn. So was unilateral disarmament, which is one of Corbyn's cornerstone policies. So glad Labour is returning to being an actual clear alternative rather than just Tory-lite like in New Labour days. Tony said something very prophetic about New Labour. He said that it was like a bonfire on a frozen pond. It looks really pretty, but slowly it starts melting away its own base. That is exactly what New Labour did. Just look at how many people cite the Iraq war or hatred for many of Brown and Blair's policies as why they left the party or didn't vote for them.

      George Bennett It was a very interesting train, there was also a a middle aged lady who I talked to about the CND movement she was in during the 60's we just all clicked. No one moaned about trains or anything, we knew the company was doing their best, the only two staff were a ticket collector and a driver that was it. It's not the staff's fault they probably had lay-offs to pay for the CEO's golf holiday so we weren't mad at them they were doing everything they could to get the coupler derailier back up and running. Honest it was so funny, we were doing "things you wouldn't hear on a broken down train" and "things David Cameron doesn't want you to know about network rail" mock the week style, the creativity was all there even the kids were on it. There was a single mum with a 18 month toddler boy he was cute as anything and we sung 3 men and a baby lullaby to send him off! "goodnight sweetheart well it's time to go..."

    And things haven't got much better since then - only 30% of jobs in this country can be defined as 'skilled' compared to somewhere like Germany where 60% of jobs represent skilled labour. Unfortunately, it's no longer possible to raise these issues since we have a government and press in power who've successfully convinced the public that A. All people out of work are lazy. B. All the good jobs have been taken by immigrants anyway. C. That if you've got a degree from a top tier university it's no more than conceitedness preventing you from serving coffee to people at Starbucks for the rest of your life. RIP Benn.

      Benn and his communist cohorts destroyed the UK.
      They have developed massive council estates that where initially developed for the poorest people but today have workers living in them because they have been priced out of the market by planning.
      Blair done his best to wreck the UK and his political father in Law tried the same.

    • @owood2288
      @owood2288 10 лет назад +5

      Did the communists sell off the council houses as well? In any case, I thought the consensus was that Benn never really wielded any serious influence when it came to policy-making. That's the one thing all his obituary writers (pro and con) seem to have agreed on anyway.

    I will not dance on her grave as many on the right portray those of us that will not praise her.
    I simply will not portray as any except what she was, what she did and what her legacy was, and as an ex miner in an ex mining village I can say there was nothing but bad!
    And that her legacy does more than linger today.
    This speaker is of great conscience, speaks more truth than any Torie ever has.

    What a wonderful view of what human nature really longs for, compassion for one another, instead we have a society based on material gain...he who dies with the most toys wins. We had to socialise the banks when their poisonous, corrupt financial system failed, is it beyond the wit of man to develop a society that shares instead of competes, or are we going to keep on blankly repeating the same old tired phrase " capitalism is the worst form of government except for the others ". We are frozen in history, let's be a bit more creative. Tony Benn, one of the best.

    we need higher tax

    • @epiphany55
      @epiphany55 9 лет назад +1

      +chris hob Not necessarily higher. We need a complete overhaul of the tax system which is currently, in spite of propaganda from both the establishment "left" and right, wholly regressive. This is because when tax gets spent on infrastructure, it enriches the land owner as the unimproved value of their property increases. It's that unimproved value we should be taxing and returning to communities and trusts in the form of a dividend.
      Aside from that, income tax is a tax on the fruits of labour (which all socialists, whether statist or libertarian should oppose) and it's not even that effective because the wealthy know where to move their income to avoid paying. What virtually nobody is talking about is the land value tax. You can't move land, it is a gift from nature, not labour, and it is the greatest source of idly generated wealth in the country. An LVT could easily replace income tax and a whole host of other direct taxes. It would also disincentivise land hoarding for speculative purposes and the unproductive use of land.
      The reason nobody has talked about it seriously since Churchill's liberal period is because they know such a change would not get passed the 2nd chamber - where the land owning aristocrats dwell. Until we reform the House of Lords, land reform will not be on the agenda and increasing income tax will be the only option on people's minds.

    I totally agree tax avoidance is totally unfair. The international community must crack down on it. People earning above the threshold should pay 40% unless they offset some into charities. But it should not be above 40% or all the great minds will leave this country. We need people with wealth to invest.
    There are 3 major problems with world finance.
    1.) Outsourcing for cheaper labour abroad.
    2.) Tax avoidance by multinationals and individuals.
    3.) Internet shopping (Ties in to 2)
