And 'Bringing up Baby' is a great comedy! It's surprisingly funny and mind blowingly contemporary! If 'Bringing up Baby' releases today it'll be a blockbuster

The feminist and authentic depiction of women is one of the reasons (along with great scripts) that I prefer late 30’s and 40’s films over almost all contemporary American film.

      Incredible roles for women.

Yeah. Certainly not all, but many of the films whose popularity survived. Maybe the more prominent films had the best actresses who got the parts from the best scripts. Would that bode well for the future, ie all the sexist and patronizing bs movies will fade away.

Oh my gosh! I also hated “The Philadelphia Story”!!! I like this guy

The Philadelphia story was written first as a play by Katharine Hepburn's friend. It was all a try and strike out Hepburn's name off the "box office poison" list.. It was PS that gave Hepburn her true power back

Maybe think of The Philadelphia Story as a a compulsory surrender to values which were the antithesis of Hepburn herself, but which she embraced on film (while contradicting them in the making of the film) to reignite her career. How many female actresses today swallow being in films with terrible and degrading scripts in the service of having any career at all?

Hepburn was box office poison because audiences disliked her, the press called her Katharine of Arrogance, and she decided to use The Philadelphia Story as her comeback because Tracy Lord gets a comeuppance that’s deserved. I love that film for its refusal to sympathize with Tracy and Hepburn intended it to be that way.
