goofy is canonically from a diferent species but still a canine, pluto is a domestic dog but goofy is a ''canis lupus goofus'' (that's literally the name of the species lol)
And here I thought you couldn't draw a line between Pluto and Scooby-Doo, but his portrayal in the climax of The Moose Hunt has officially proven me wrong.
4:24 this internal monologue sounds a lot like the little devil on Plutos shoulder when his conscience was shown that way in a few cartoons, classic angel and devil, which makes Pluto himself seem less malicious like in that clip
Pluto once had a shoulder angel who talked to Pluto. It was in reference to Pluto deciding whether, or not, to save a kitten from drowning in a frozen pond.
The angel/devil plutos were comedy gold, especially in house of mouse. I remember one episode where Pluto was having an existential crisis over saving three stray kittens from the rain, Mickey waking up from all the noise, grounding him and the Plutos actually appearing to Mickey (😂) over him being a bad owner. The whole scene ended up on something like "don't you guys have anything better to do than show up out of the blue and argue?" of which they actually get offended by 😂😂😂
While 3:23 does sound like mammy, is 2:27 really also supposed to be mammy? If Disney redubbed it to be a bark I guess so, but no matter how many times I loop it, it just sounds like minnie to me.
the first one i thought was just him saying minnie and the second occurrence i honestly didn't even know what was racist about saying mammy until i just looked it up and found that the racism doesn't come from the fact that there was a stereotype of blacks saying mammy or mammy being a slur like the n word but from the fact that mammy is a alternative version of black face so Pluto is basically just saying black face in both shots
Pluto's shoulder devil and shoulder angel also appear in one of the newer Disney cartoons called "Easy street." Have you seen it? If not you can find it on RUclips.
"Huh?" is definitely a line and not a "(Pluto gasps in realization)" since Huh is a word and not an inquisitive "bow" or "Howl". If Scooby can say worlds like "Ruh" then Huh is a word Pluto said.
I doubt it was expermintation personally, Pluto's first dialouge were mostly gags, and the "Mammy" was just a quick reference to Al Jolson (which was what alot of people did back then). Althought it'd be intresting if they were experimenting with him speaking..
Yeah, the instances in 1930 probably weren't experimentation but were rather what they at the time thought fit the character. In the case of Mickey's Kangaroo, though, they had had four years to figure things out and as such Pluto by then was pretty firmly established as a silent, more animal-like character. So in that regard, I think that having him communicate with words in any way after that time could be labeled "experimentation".
@sheenerandcompany I can see that definitely, thanks for explaining a bit more, they probably did want him to talk at some point time but just never thought it would fit
You know, I initially didn't realize how the line 2:27 was supposed to be racist... until I saw the scene at 3:18. Yeesh. Old Disney sure was something else, huh?

At that point, a knight (who happens to pretty much be an anthro version of Pluto) goes and tells the King about it. You can _tell_ it's Pluto...
Whole "Why can't Pluto, but Goofy can"... people need to just accept it's an inherent oddity with andromorphic characters. If you're super strict with it, then no character can have a pet and that's just much less fun.
The only time I thought he was talking was when the angle and devil was on his shoulder. It is him after all. Thought I could be mistaken considering there were alot of characters that played that same trope

Interestingly, there are also moments in the early Floyd Gottfredson Mickey comics where Pluto has an internal monologue. It's definitely more cursed when there's an audible voice accompanying him, though 💀

I don’t think I’ll _ever_ be able to unhear his voice, even in the meme-compilations
Seeing Pluto talking at random moments makes the character even funnier!
Like how Tom (of "& Jerry") screams with a man's voice.
He should be Pluto's distance away from dialogue.
I for one would LOVE to hear Pluto Talk. And Since he is voiced Bill Farmer who is the same voice of Goofy, What better way to let HIM fit this role.
He talks in Mickey Mouse Funhouse while Daisy dreams
Cus it’s a dream broski 😭
