    Makes me happy I don’t have hair. I took an industrial, hourly, maintenance job many years ago and I am still with the same company. Being a licensed electrician brings a premium of six figures a year and up and we’re highly sought after. P.L.C. troubleshooting and being able to get machenary up and running using prints is critical. There have been times management has hovered over me while freaking out as I replaced bad cards and V.F.D. and programmed them. Maybe the plant was going to be shut down over an obscure aux contactor. Keep learning and you will make yourself your weight in gold. I have a tool cart that has most the stuff I need, mostly just maintain electrical systems and run circuits once in awhile, or move them. I changed the plant to L.E.D. lighting, so I still wear a tool belt once in a while. There’s something to be said about good benefits and working for a company.

    I work mid shift in a manufacturing/mechanical setting, and I love it, much better than morning shift to me. We call those 1230pm shift mid shifts.

    Oh man, you're not wrong about hospitals being cold.. when I was on the table in the OR, I was so cold, but it didn't matter since they knocked me out a few min later.

    I worked night shifts for a while. I don't know if I'll ever do it again. 10 hours wasn't close to enough sleep, my body felt terrible, and I was a zombie. Some people are cut out for it, but I'm not one of those people.

    Maybe night shift would do me well. I get my energy from 11-4 am, I'm just more awake when the sun goes down but I'm glad it's working out for you! I haven't wore sunscreen for a number of years, I guess I should start again 🙃 What's your favourite timbit lol?

  • @lylewatts6370
    @lylewatts6370 2 года назад +2

    Yes I hate working nights! Can't sleep in the daytime and always tired. 11 to 7 were the hours. We used to try and sleep for a few hours around 3am or so up on the cable racks. Ah but life was so much easier back then. Please take care and industrial or maintenance work is the way to go.

    Hi Jess. Is it doable to refuse to work an evening/ night shift? :( Is there a certain timeframe in which you kinda have to deal with it (like for 1-3 years) and then you can refuse?

    I've been thinking about starting an industrial electrical apprenticeship. The one thing that intimidates me a little is possibly being the only female. Did you find it challenging being a female in this trade?

    • @jessthesparky
      @jessthesparky  Год назад +1

      It’s definitely challenging some days but honestly I’ve had more good than bad! Most of the guys are so happy to see women getting into the trades and I can honestly say I’ve met at least one coworker at every job site who has taken me under their wing to teach me everything I need to know :)

      Go for it... maybe you will finde good working enviremant where people will not give a fuSk about gender and be cool with you because you are fresh and show you around industrial facility and teach you stafs what,where,why,how...
      I am electrican with 20 years exp. in industrial enviremant... maintence to be exact. Usualy working colege are okay with new person and show you everything and you follow them like little puppy with sad eyes and little by little after 1 or 2 month you will be on your owne with one more person minimum (we have rule "NEVER work alone... NEVER").
      Get as far as posible away of rubber, gas, oil industy, coal powerplant (to name a few) not worth money in my oppinion... too much risk/hazzard for money, you want to be alive and functional after 65 years old.
      If you are lucky and get job on maintance your life will be highlife (:
      No too hard tasks, here and there you change electric motor rewhire it or some sensore, maybe VFD or PLC... because you are beginer some senior personel will be with you all the time and show you how you troubleshot problems on machine and to change parts like PLC and VFD and to reprogram them. Some time you will sit on chair 6 or 7 hours of 8 hours shift sometime you will end up working 7 hours and in some cases machine will stop working half hour before shift end soo you will stay extra hour or 2...

    What do you mean that you bid for a job? Is this like interviewing and getting the job or saying you would do the job for X amount?

      It’s the same as “applying”, however whoever has been laid off in the union the longest out of all applicants will be the one who is offered the job first if they choose to apply

      You can go to a community college for electrian or a trade school tbh getting into locals I think are good to but it is easier to just go down the school route

      A lot of the local ibews have a PACT (pre apprenticeship candidate training) program if you look on their website which is what I took. 1000 bucks, they give you the code book some PPE and 12 weeks of in class and shop training. They also give you job placement.. Was definitely worth it. However that was a year ago. I got out of the union and now I'm about to start a new job doing industrial. Not 9-5 Monday to Friday but I don't have family so whatever I guess. Will be 14 days on 7 days off, but could change to 21/7 depending. 10-12 hour days. We'll see how it goes.

    I worked for a large Electrical Contractor here in Canada 2015-2017, 5500 employees, Resi/Com/Industrial, I preferred Commercial by a long shot! Unfortuneatly, they went bankrupt in the construction crash, and the trade was oversaturated and depressed until this April. Doing something else now, but I can say my biggest issue overall, was just all the assholes you have to deal with (esp foreman). However, I wasn't union so maybe its different on that side of the house.
