I think the couple were surprised because they thought you were Malay, Malays don't eat at Petaling Street, because Muslims only eat halal foods. With your look, people would assume that you are local, unless you tell them. You could be Malay, Chinese or mix.
ahh yes! I find that when I travel in Asia people think I'm from that country, which is totally fine with me! I think my brain just automatically freaks out when I don't know what people are saying.

From the eye level, KL Tower looks taller because it is built on a hill. Actual height, Petronas Twin Towers are taller than KL Tower but the tallest building in Malaysia is the Merdeka 118 which is currently 2nd tallest in the world.
People called it Petronas Tower but a Malaysians called it KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre)
