Great video! It should be noted that green lipped mussels are incredibly high in Omega 3’s, and are incredible for joint health! We feed them to our 10 year old Cavoodle and she still has the energy of a puppy ☺️
Yes…usually when people give daily green lipped mussels whole or powdered, it’s because they’re anti inflammatory to prevent or reduce arthritis pain. Wheatgrass is usually given for the chlorophyll which helps detox bad stuff, and gives a feeling of well-being. I’ve had good results from feeding wheatgrass juice powder (not the whole grass) and Spirulina to cats when they were sick. And Chlorella for anaemia (the iron is more easily absorbed than from other sources for some reason. I myself had anaemia for years, supplements didn’t work - tablets, liquid iron, molasses. Nothing helped. Chlorella works so well I have to limit it or I get symptoms of iron overload ).
I've been doing this for over 20 years. I've seen a lot of fats. Come and go. And that includes ingredients. One ingredient will get hot and everybody insists that it needs to be in every bowl. And a year or two later it's completely out of favor. That's why I'm never quick to adopt the newest suggestions and the newest trends in ingredients to add to the meals. The same reason I don't add supplements every day. I do have supplements that I can give, but not daily. I still stick to variety and balancing overtime.
I think some people are starting to really over complicate feeding. Dogs have been living on human scraps for 20 to 30 thousand years.. feed red meat, make sure they have lots of organs, make sure they have plenty of bone. It doesn't have to be rocket science. I mean oysters? Really?!
@@anonperson3972 there's no doubt in my mind that people are over complicating it. partly because it is now commercialized. There is money to be made in those supplements, recipes, etc. it was a lot easier when I started out, there weren't 5000 RUclips and Facebook channels trying to tell you what to do. And not the virtue signaling that goes on now. they are making it so complicated that they are scaring people away from raw feeding and that is a very bad thing.

the mussels are cooked and frozen where i buy from Asian supermarkets, they dont come with the shell, it says Chilean mussels on the pack, are these likely black mussels?
I always watch your videos even tho I can not convince my parents to switch our dog to a raw diet, I am starting to give up after 5 years, and when I get my own dog i am probably going to be feeding a pre made raw/commercial raw food because I would way too stressed about making my dogs meals 😅
Awh, well I appreciate you watching. I hope I can make the concept of DIY easier for you as the years progress, but if not, pre-made is so much better than dry or canned!
I try to keep meals simple and swap every week. Like one week on and one week off. I had to switch some organs for freeze dried because my dog is extremely picky with it. We learned she hates liver unless it's in a freeze-dried form. Even frozen, she'll just take it out of the bowl and eat the rest.
In 1 month we’re going to switch our cats to a raw diet! But for now to boost there digestive system we’re feeding them around 10 percent salmon and 10 percent Turkey 🦃 🐈
Are tehre other benefits to Pork liver? Living in China it is one of the easiest and most affordable organ to get and I add it all the time. Do I need to find a new source of Zinc or should I switch out the liver all together.
What do you do if you have a readily available food, but can't find the nutritional information for it? For me it is rabbit kidneys. Do I just not not feed it?
I've fed rabbit kidney often! What I do is look at the nutritional data of animal kidney that I can find, then get the average of that. For the most part, kidney are great sources of B vitamins and selenium!
I’ve been trying to feed my 4 cats raw. I couldn’t find any hearts. I was worried about them not getting the taurine they need so I was still giving them their toxic canned crack with the raw. I’d split 1 can between the 4 of them. Our grocer was bought out and new owners brought in beef kidney and hearts. Cats eat kidneys but won’t touch the hearts. None of them ! Any suggestions?
Have you tried searing little pieces in a bit of tallow? My cat is the same with raw liver (haven't tried heart yet, it's still early days). He'll eat it that way. He loves tallow (not too much obviously).
Hearts. Try quail. They will have the heart inside still. They only take out the Guts. Mexican markets and Asian markets carry them. And chicken hearts are sold as well. With gizzards
I just started feeding gussys gut! I dont think a lot of people know about it but so far, my dogs LOVE it! Im hoping its not a gimmick and it good for them😊
So far I've only seen that it's copper that can't be absorbed. Pork liver is a decent source of zinc which is great. Many thought that because it contains a good amount of zinc, this could be why copper wasn't being absorbed (copper and zinc compete when it comes to absorption) but it's not crazy high in zinc or anything, so that is less likely the cause

Hello! Thank you for this video and for all your video! It’s very difficult to find informations about all these kinds of mussels. What i can find in my grocerie is bags of frosen mussels (mytilus chilensis) from Chili, but it’s not sure it’s full of manganese than the one you talk, mytilus edulis from Canada... nothing about the manganese for this mussel on internet. I think i will put that in the garbage...
Most of my knowledge is from experience, personal research, veterinary textbooks, canine and feline nutrition books, but I have taken the nutrition course by the Companion Animal and Science Institute as well.
When a lion pulls a deer down and starts eating it it's really thinking "Gee I wish I could have some commercial pet food fibre and plants with this meal". Also, the lion thinks "I need some seed oils in my diet".
Thats interesting. My dog doesnt like pork organs only beef but loves this med size prok bones i can only find at vietnamese market but highly prefres red meat. I def learned to listent and watch. My orange cat will go on a hunger strike if he doesmt get quail. Loves the little organs in them and loves chicken organs. But wont eat if he gets more then 1oz of red meat.
Depends on the grocery store. My local grocery stores stock chicken hearts/gizzards from time to time fresh. a different grocery store I used to shop at only had them frozen. and asian grocery stores you can always find them. Also, some pet stores are now stocking canned green beef tripe toppers. So check the canned area too in pet stores if they don't have it in the raw fridge.
Feed as many types of organs as possible, prioritise red meat, give some vegetables occasionally. It doesn't need to be rocket science. Dogs have been living on human scraps for 20-40 thousand years after all..
I personally stopped trying to supplement and use food. I also rotate organ meats from different animals. I gave up the fish thing as my dogs hate fish I occasionally add some premade raw just for variety and “vege matter” because they would starve before eating it 😂
Are we really going to pretend wild dogs take trips to the ocean and pull up muscles for manganese. We think we know so much but i think we know very little.
Realistically they’d most likely get that through whatever it is that they ate. Whatever it was that the prey ate before becoming someone’s meal, though they probably never touched muscles like you said. Unless near costal land
Raw feeders are trying to provide the best meals they can for their animals, and sometimes have to improvise with ingredients to meet a certain nutrient requirement because the food that usually provides that nutrient is unavailable for some reason or another
Of course they wouldn't lol, but manganese isn't concentrated in any particular body part that we know of other than tripe. Manganese has been deemed an essential nutrient to dogs and cats bodies, so the next best place to get it if we can't feed tripe/whole prey animals is another animal-based food such as mussels.
Why are we feeding so many different things in one meal? Making feeding raw way to complicated. Pick a good meat, pork. Beef, lamb, rabbit,....add some fish oil to one meal 2-3 times a week. Add beef liver to one meal a day. Add a secreting organ to one meal 4 times a week. Done.
