The land he wanted was zoned C-2. It would not have allowed for the building of an arena. The State of Arizona stepped in and stopped the auction from happening. Without any cooperation from The Ishiba family who own the Suns and Mercury on getting a new arena, then returning to Phoenix for any owner might be impossible.

Get this... The player with the playoff goals record won the Conn Smythe on the losing team. The player with the assist record won the Conn Smythe on the losing team, and (this one is debatable), the greatest goaltending performance in the playoffs I have ever witnessed since I was old enough to watch hockey back in 1991, (Giguere) won the Conn Smythe in 2003 on the losing team. Giguere literally willed the Ducks from Round 1 to Game 7 of the Finals that year.

I kept talking to him about how critical other roles are to a successful team - one guy I would use to illustrate that was Riley Sutter. He’s a fourth line AHL center, won’t ever be a star - but he took a ton of defensive zone faceoffs and was a key player due to his defensive skills. I pointed out all year good plays Riley made, and that his team knew how important he was since he was assistant captain when McIlrath got called up. Last night felt like a huge payoff, Sutter made the key play on the game winning goal keeping the puck in the offensive zone with his forecheck - didn’t even get an assist but my son saw it and was talking about how Riley was the unsung hero of the game when we left the arena last night.
So I know he gets what being a team player is now…I appreciate Riley Sutter’s help in teaching my son that life lesson.

Its not that everyone hates McDavid, they hate how the media jams him down our throats. The Panthers won the Stanley Cup but all you hear about is McDavid and the Oilers. You will have a 20 minute segment on the broadcast and 15 minutes is about the losing team oilers and mcdavid and 5 minutes on the winning panthers. We get it, hes the greatest player playing. Why not talk about how Forzling and Barkov shut down McDavid in games 6 and 7? People want to talk about how many points he had in the finals. In 7 games he had 11 points which is good, however 8 of those 11 points came in 2 games, games 4 and 5. You could easily talk about how the Florida Panthers have such a great defensive system that in 5 of the 7 games McDavid was basically non existent. That is peoples problems with McDavid. This video for example, you spent 2 and a half minutes ranting about McDavid and the hate he gets. Why not just say that McDavid won the Conn Smythe did not come out on the ice to accept it, maybe its better to award the conn smythe at the awards, would of taken 30 seconds like very other topic except for the phoenix topic as that's a big topic

The whole Conn Smythe controversy reminds me of the 2014 World Championship. Pekka Rinne singlehandedly carried a mediocre Finnish team to the final, where they unded up losing 5-2 to a stacked Russian team, backstopped by none other than Sergei Bobrovsky who had a 95,03 SV%, 1.13 GAA, 8-0-0 record and one SO through the tournament. Tournament MVP went to Rinne however, who finished with 92.83 SV%, 1.88 GAA, and a 5-3-1 record with 3 SO. Apparently some people thought it should've gone to Bobrovsky with his ridiculous statline, but Russia probably would've won even without him, while on the other hand Finland had no business making it as far as they did, with Rinne being the only reason they made it that far.
Anyways...I seem to have forgotten what the point of this whole story was. People get unreasonably angry when Bob doesn't get the MVP...maybe...? Anyway, people should just chill. I think both players very much deserved their MVP status, and if McDavid doesn't care because that's not the trophy that matters, who are we to judge him?

    • @jkliao6486
      @jkliao6486 2 месяца назад

I feel like the MVP should only go to the losing team player unless you can make an argument that all the players on the winning team is replaceable. Because to me, the value is only in winning the cup, making the final doesn't even mount to half the value as winning the cup. Let's say if without Bob, Florida loses, then he is more valuable to the Florida teams than McDavid to Oilers because even with McDavid, they still lose, and losing gloriously doesn't add match value in my book than losing.

If the Panthers won Game 6 in Edmonton, and McDavid was still awarded the Conn Smythe trophy, I think he would probably go out because it's in his home arena, and it would allow him to at least give one final salute to the home fans. But because it was Game 7 in Florida, he made the right call by not going out and pulling any attention away from the Panthers' celebration. Now we will have to see what the Oilers will be able to do in the off-season to be able to pull off next season what the Panthers pulled this season after coming up short in last year's Cup Final.

I believe Phoenix was targeted to return as team #36, and other cities (Houston, Atlanta, insert other city here) are ahead. In that, I don't think that much has changed either. Just now, in addition to needing a place to play, Phoenix now also needs an owner.
In an interview with a local news station here in Atlanta, one of the competing owners said he believed an expansion team here could begin play in time for the 2027-2028 season. Time will tell how true this turns out to be, but if that timing is to hold true, expansion would need to come up in more than what we've heard recently.

I understand McDavid not wanting to come out for the Conn Smythe presentation. This isn't the trophy that he and his teammates were shooting for. On the other hand, this is sort of a slap in the face to the league, and the host city. Maybe it's right that this gets presented at the awards ceremony.
I wasn't thrilled with Ullmark's play as a Sabre. When he came to Boston, he proved that he could play well. It's often the case that a goalie's success has quite a bit to do with the defense in front of him. We'll see how he does in Ottawa. Would not be surprised if he ends up signing with the Leafs as a free agent.

I'm really thinking that Bettman knew all along that this was going to happen with Meruelo. Bettman, love him or hate him, is a savvy businessman most of the time, and it wouldn't surprise me if he and Utah were aware of the C-2 zoning limitations.
Why do I mention Utah? Well, does anyone find it strange that they chose to not pick a name or a team logo for the upcoming season?
Many times in the past when this sort of thing happens, there's been plenty of time to create a new brand and have time to have it ready for the next season.
I have a sneaking suspicion that both parties were waiting for the rights for the Arizona Coyotes to become available on the open market, and now that they are, Bettman can look at keeping the balance of the teams at 32, because from his previous messaging, he sounded pretty noncommittal about NHL expansion outside of the current 32 teams, outside of the Arizona team reactivation thing. I think he was fully intending to drag the rights to Utah, and let them keep the history as well, even if they choose to rebrand the Coyotes name itself.
If this is all true, this is one heck of a 4D chess power move.

Meruelo - the auction was crazy from the get go - everyone knew he needed that land, and so other bidders would've just bid to screw with him (even at that cost-risk). so, i think that he HAD to do something like this, release this kind of statement, before he could perhaps push a shill into the auction mix. it doesn't look great for him, to be sure, but he's shown he doesn't really care about how he looks. as a businessman... i think he sets up a shill and still tries to get the land. PHX is still a viable franchise location... so if he can snap that land up and get it sorted for building an arena, at about $60M or less, then i think he goes through the process to keep his options open. then he can be the construction developer and probably part owner of the next expansion team (probably with a more... palatable head owner).
if anyone wanted to emulate Frank McCourt (of Dodgers fame), it sounds like it would be Meruelo.
