Most impressive footage of SRN4 operations, particularly the part taken at Dover from a ferry! Never seen films from such angle, as one can really see how they came down the ramp and accelerated, once outside the harbour. Brings back memories from my own crossings on all the hovercraft routes and with all operators during the seventies and eighties (even had one crossing on the N500). Thank you very much!
We will pprobably never again see these fantastic machines crossing the channel. I was lucky to travel from Calais to Dover back in the 1970ies in one of the smaller Mk1 crafts as a small boy. If I remember right it had the white-blue "Seaspeed" colour scheme with the blue double arrows. In my dreams once a day they will reactivate the remaining "The Princess Anne" as a retro cross channel service for enthusiasts. Even if the tickets would be very expensive I'm sure they wouldn't have any problem to sell all seats and car places very quickly.
No words can convey the presence and aura these had when coming up onto the beach at full pelt, the power they had shook you and caused your body to shake one should be fully restored and taken out once a year to demonstrate how great britain was once no1 in the world. Things like this are proof of that.
wow the SRN4, went on one when i was about 8 years old but didn't really appretiate it, If only i could have the chance again co's it's britain at it's best once more, It's up there with the likes of the vulcan ,harrier, lightning.
Oh nostalgia! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.
A marvel of engineering like the DUGA-1 over the horizon rardar near Chernobyl.... I visited both and I have now my head full of souvenirs till the end of my miserable life ! I regret that time when we were going to London with Hoverspeed and P&O ferries.

I drive the US Navy Hovercraft (LCAC) I would have loved to of had a chance to ride on of those.
I flew them several times ,and they where more impressive than a 747.....bring them back !!

The Rad, White and Blue livery I think suited the Mk3 much better then the white.
all but two of them were cut up for scrap. the remaining two are at the hovercraft museum in lee-on-the-solent.
That's how beautiful it was.

i alway remember the effect these had on the voice....speaking to someone was a weird experience
Amazing machines
We can't even make our own trains any more.
❤️❤️👍❤️❤️
Wat happened to these marvels of the seas
I've been on this a few times as a kid, I know it was expensive to maintain...... but was it the chunnel that killed it?
yes sadly.....but i believe hovercraft is still quicker than the tunnel
Partly the chunnel, partly the loss of duty free sales, and partly the very high operating costs compared to a relatively small pay load per crossing.
Unfortunately the hovercraft was killed by the channel tunnel.
