  • Keir Starmer is back and faces Kemi Badenoch in this week's PMQs. James O’Brien and LBC’s Political Editor, Natasha Clark offer their analysis.
    The Prime Minister was challenged on topics such as farmers, taxes, business and jobs - amid anger over employment reforms this week, protests over inheritance tax and as 1100 jobs are at risk with the closure of Vauxhall’s factory in Luton, a move made in the context of the stringent" UK zero-emission vehicle mandate.
    'That was absolutely extraordinary.'
    'I think that's the best she's been and she was appalling.'
    'She was a lot calmer to start with.'
    'As it went on, she did lose the room a little bit.'
    'She's still settling into an incredibly difficult job.'
    'Keir Starmer needs to engage more with the questions.'
    'How many years before they stop blaming each other?'
    'It's sometimes just about holding their feet to the fire.'
    'He batted away the question on the 2030 EV car ban.'
    'That's where I'd expect that kind of comment, the school playground.'

    Natasha doesn’t understand the issue on EVs. Many car manufacturers want 2030 in place. They’ve been ramping up ready for it. The issue is that before then they have targets to hit each year on EV sales or they can buy the target from EV manufacturers. These targets are struggling because EV costs have spiralled and manufacturers continued (through their own stupidity) to make EVs as the luxury expensive option. So they aren’t hitting annual targets as people are opting for ICE and hybrid to save money. Pushing the date back would actually be disastrous because it would create more limbo and more difficulty for car manufacturers to transition their production lines to EV. However I have little sympathy with many manufacturers who insist on making their EVs crazy prices. We need smaller, cheaper EVs to be the norm and Dacia, Hyundai etc are showing it’s more than possible.

    • @JupiterThunder
      @JupiterThunder 2 месяца назад +4

      EVs are an environmental disaster, due to all the mining needed for the huge amounts of raw materials they need. Compare that to a simple ICE which weighs much less and simply consists of an engine block with some cylinders drilled into it. Also, we are about to have rolling black outs because we have no electricity generation. So how will you charge your EV in a black out? Better to have a variety of power sources, including petrol, or society will collapse. I will never, ever, buy and EV. The only way forward for electric transport is electrification of mass transportation systems, i.e.e electric trams etc - which the UK had repeatedly shown it is too incompetent to build.

    • @zappybazinga8124
      @zappybazinga8124 2 месяца назад +2

      @ The problem with this argument is that EVs and shifting from fossil fuels is not a zero sum game. The advantage of reducing emissions are significant. As it stands the only option are EVs and people pointing out why EVs aren’t ideal are not wrong but at the same time…they are much better than ICE in terms of emissions over lifetime. Even factoring in the higher material and production costs. They are better. Is there something even better? Maybe but not in the next two decades.

    • @user-od5db3wo5f
      @user-od5db3wo5f 2 месяца назад +1

      @@JupiterThunder That's not a correct statement. Whilst EV's are not the ultimate green solution, they are a significant improvement over internal combustion engines burning fossil fuels. The mining etc is more damaging than the mining of iron ore used for ICE engine blocks. In terms of overall mass of metal extracted, the Cobalt used for Anodes and Cathodes is a fraction of the Iron Ore used for the engine block. The refinement of iron ore into a useful steel is not clean either. Current fossil fuel powered furnaces are still used at most refineries. Electric Arc Furnaces are being developed but you have the same ultimate question to answer about the impact on the grid for these furnaces, most of which will receive power from the incineration of municipal waste. A process which is incredibly inefficient and not a green energy production in any way. It is true that production of electric cars does produce more green house gases, but it is not as clear cut as saying it is an absolute issue of one being much worse than the other.
      The ultimate analysis developed by the Observer shows that the additional Carbon Debt produced in the manufacture of electric vehicles is paid off within 1 year of normal use, and from then on it is an improvement over a combustion engine.
      The other factors to consider are regarding electric car utilisation itself. Whilst the vehicle is heaver, the use of regenerative braking prevents the excess mass from generating more particulate release in the form of brake dust. Additional tyre wear is a consideration from the increased weight but the absolute control of torque will reduce tyre wear through acceleration.
      The exhausts and subsequent local emissions are the key consideration for moving away from Fossil Fuel ICE. Combustion engines running on a direct drive to the wheels (via a crank shaft) have significant variances in resistance and speed etc. So the combustion itself cannot operate in a steady state and hit the optimum stoichiometric ratio of air to fuel to be most efficient. The emissions of direct drive combustion engines is far worse than any book figures given. Diesel itself is appalling and must be banned. The longer Hydrocarbon chains within Diesel produce varying compounds on emission. The fact that they laud diesels for low CO2 emissions is frightening. Fully combusting a Hydrocarbon would produce CO2. So the fact that they are tailored to emit low CO2 results in a much lower combustion efficiency, and the emission of longer partial combusted hydrocarbons. Most of which are far more environmentally damaging and harmful to humans. There is also a significant particulate content as well. These gases released tend to be heavier than air and on a cold exhaust, most will sit just above ground level. The school drop off, where people leave just recently started cars running will cause a high concentration of damaging gases / particulate at the level for maximum exposure for Children.
      Ultimately, using a green source combustion (Hydrogen or Algae Biofuels) on an engine working only as a generator for a hybrid powered car is the most environmentally friendly alternative. Even that comes with the issue of sourcing materials for the hybrid batteries and the production of NOx in combustion.
      Electrification of mass transport, and serious investment in the mass transport infrastructure, is a significant step we must take forward. But the core of this country is car driving and we do not have the time or resources to change that enough before too much environmental damage is too severe. We have to deal with the immediate issue of combustion engine cars.
      I say all this, not to try and argue, but to raise the point that this is an incredibly complicated issue and that we can't talk in absolutes as we push for the most environmentally friendly alternative. I'm an engineer, I studied Automotive Engineering. I did my dissertation in alternative fuels and found my passion in environmental engineering. I have worked as the technical manager at an air pollution control company for over a decade and I am certain I do not have all the information or an answer to give as a definite.
