Checking GPU-Z on both cards confirms that it is Samsung GDDR6 being used. Others have reported receiving Hynix GDDR6 chips in their 7900 GREs, if so let me know which maker model you have purchased.
on sapphire nitro+ 7900xtx it uses Hynix sooo maybe the premium models use Hynix and the non premium models like pulse use Samsung
I got a Nitro+ with Hynix memory, awesome looking card and all but crashes with 2350 MHz on the VRAM already, but only when idling.

Brian - another RUclipsr, his channel is Ancient Game Plays, did a video on overclocking the vram on the GRE and said that the vram speed is limited unless you overclock the GPU core as well. He theorized that without it your vram overclocking will be limited. If you haven’t seen it just do a search for Ancient Game Plays RX 7800XT vs RX 7900GRE.
Hey man, tried that out, would crash eventually after playing dota 2. So might be ok for a few benchmark runs, but not 100% stable. Can overclock the core as well, but at that stage you can overclock anything else in a similar fashion and it just becomes a race to mass over power consumption.

@@techyescity Have you tried running GPU-Z in the background to show the memory controller load in percent? This way you see when the GPU memory controller is saturated and if increasing the vRam MHz doesn't bring it down, the GPU MHz should be raised etc etc

IMHO, great card. Bought it for the eldest teen in the home. She loves it. I undervolted it (-25mV), increased VRAM to ~2500MHz, adjusted power to +7%. All good.
I would just max out the power slider lol. I'm running+15 on my XT with 3000 on the core and 2650 on the memory using fast timings

I get a Max Core Boost of 2873. Max stable VRAM is 2450 at 1010V Fast Timings.
Alana Wake 2 @1440p Avg FPS increased from 60 to 67. 0.1 FPS increased from 45 to 55.
Most other games are 100+ so the OC isnt really worth it.
Increasing power limit and undervolting maybe help further oc results... what other guys usually does when oc tests.
Hi, it's not the bus width either, but the smaller L3 cache. The same goes for the 4070 Ti Super and 4080. The Nvidia cards are really similar in terms of bandwidth, but the cache is way larger on the 4080.
Really sad how the RX 6800/XT still hasn't really been beat by AMD 4 years later. I think I'm going to keep trying to wait for the 8000 series.
Do you like a 5700 XT like card? Because that is what AMD has in the 8000 series, nothing higher tier. It won't be much of an upgrade from the 6800 XT, a bit but not much. You will likely have to wait for the 9000-series.

6800xt had 72 cu and msrp was 649$ and 7800xt has 60 cu which falls in line with 6800 non xt and is priced lower

You need the sapphire nitro+ it doesn't have the Samsung memory and everyone with that card is reporting higher clocks 2600 plus megahertz on the vram everyone with the Samsung memory seems to have the same issue of typically getting black screens at around 2450 MHz. Some other people have done extensive testing and have figured out that while it seems stable. Technically, we'll still have system crashes randomly above 2316, so they're assuming that it is most likely a driver related issue that we may see better overclocking later, but I don't know time May Tell but good video
I have the Nitro+ with Hynix memory and already at 2400 MHz it crashes in idle, not in games though.
@@verneeiro Mess with your voltages You need higher clocks on the cord to feed the memory also, but I've seen a lot of people talking about stable 2600 MHz with hynix Samsung's limit seems to be 2376
How do you determine if the bus is the bottleneck. Is there a tool for that? I have afterburner/rtss but not sure if it shows that. Just trying to optimize what i have, but that card is interesting for sure. I am thinking of getting it while i wait for new gens to shake out. I am more excited for nvidia 5000 series tbh but with all the scalpers and ai buyers it will probably be another year before we get normal prices on those
Really the only way to truly tell from my point would be to match clocks on 7900 xt vs 7900 GRE and match memory speeds, then see the performance gap.

@@rodiculous9464 It doesn't because the GPUs have different number of cores, so it wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison. Personally, I don't think the bus has anything to do with it. It's more about games being VRAM sensitive or not, or having VRAM being the bottleneck, e.g. due to low VRAM, which is not an issue here with 16GB. It would perhaps be a good idea to ask someone like Richard from DF or Steve from GN, or even better, a GPU engineer :)
Pretty good timing because i just got one last week. Im also kinda freaked out to over clock anything because i dont want my stuff to break.
What core voltage are you using? The memory oc is somehow tied to the core voltage most likely due to its mcm design, so tweaking the 7900 gre is basically finding the middle ground between core clock and memory clock as lower core voltage means higher core clocks, but lower memory clock.
You can probably oc a 7900xt too for comparison, and use its core voltage as a reference to oc the 7900 gre's memory
Using the 1050mv and even upping the power limits and core clocks helped performance a bit, but the problem with upping the core clocks and power limit targets is the power consumption starts to go way higher. The memory OC per se is quite efficient to gain some extra FPS.

With standard settings my GRE got ~80 FPS in the RDR2 ingame render test. With max stable OC settings = 88 FPS.
Then I tuned it for efficiency and ended up with
2200Mhz core
-10% tdp
2450 Vram fast timings 980mV undervolted.
Result was also ~80FPS.
BUT ... power consumption:
Standard 255W
max OC 293W
Eco 195W

Expecting a 10% fps increase for a 10% memory oc? I don't know much about oc but how does that even make sense? What about under clocking? 10% UC = 10% fps reduction? Did it used to work like that?
I got the Asrock GRE, and after a lot of testing the best performance for my card was , undervolt 963mv, memory 2340, core 2630, power slider left at stock, pushing every thing up more can degrade performance and wastes around 40 watts of power for nothing.
Can I ask which one you got? Asrock Steel Legend or Challenger version?

One thing that also might hurt overclocking, is you can't mess with the power at all so you can't do much with the voltages that would help increase performance. I was pretty let down by the overclocking tests I did (I got about a 7-8% uplift on average) especially when compared to last generation. One positive note however, this is the reason no crypto miner wants a 7000 series gpu!

I bought the gigabyte version when it launched here in the US because there was no Red Devil at the time. I just ordered a Red Devil GRE and can't wait to see if there's any performance difference. I have thing for the Red Devil cards and have quite a few of them already.

when you did the memory OC'ing was it JUST the MEMORY or did you OC the GPU too???
I ended up settling on just the memory as ocing the core ups the power consumption way too much. Undervolting is best on the new RX 7000 series cards imo. Though the GRE already has quite a conservative clock out of the box.
@@techyescity It would be nice to make clear in the video that you didn't OC the core due to power usage concerns. So, we don't really know the full potential of the GRE, since you didn't try to fully OC it, correct?
Use GPU-Z to tell you your GDDR6 manufacturer (i.e. Micron, SK Hynix, Samsung). I'm curious to see which manufacturer overclocks the highest. I think SK Hynix is making the best GDDR6 at the moment.
I don't think it is one manufacturer making better GDDR, it is the hope that the board maker just used the same stuff as they are putting in 7800XT's or even 7900XT's instead of deliberately ordering slower memory for this specific card. AMD originally designed the GRE as a China only card to get rid of cheap stock they had on hand. It is also hitting a power wall so you can't just up the sliders and get more performance, you have to balance the voltage and GPU power with whatever increase you are trying to get from the memory.
Can you make an undervolting tutorial for this card. Or maybe even some 1 to 1 comparison with some different model? I've noticed you are only youtuber which won't 'swing' that power limit to the max, and go with some crazy clock speeds OC just to then lower voltage by 50 and say 'hey it's undervolted now' xD

Still... not too bad for what it offers albeit, it's a tremendous amount of money for a hobby.
My hope for the future is GPUs that are good to cost €300 or less so everyone can enjoy them or more steam deck like devices that are competitive, one can dream.

It has 33% more cu then 7800xt but 9% slower clocks and 10% lower memory speed which results in 20% less memory bandwidth thus it's only 7-10% faster when oc ,it rises to 25%+

Makes a lot of sense that the memory bus is the performance difference mostly. For this price point seems to be a solid value. I think most people will with this card 1440P with FSR/similar in newer games. To get more, One has to spend 700 or more for a higher class GPU. If I hadn't caved for 7900XTX and 7800XT (too similar) game bundles perhaps I would have gotten one. Am expecting a 4090 but there's a point where I can see using a card like this as a daily driver, 7800XT has been a solid experience also. I can see 7900XT being what people might want experience-wise for 1440P but it's around 700 still.
2:04 It's not fair because you can dial in per-game wattman (OC) profiles on AMD that load automatically when you launch the game/application. Nvidia doesn't offer that.
Thanks for this review the 7900gre can't gain 10% only from memory... The point is the power consumption if you want 7900xt performance you need over 300w consumption. Xfx and sapphire nitro models have the higher vbios power limit and they are capable of ~325w consumption that with a good sample can give you around same performance of a 7900xt. And the mem oc is not about memory chips but vbios limitation in terms of max current... You can compare the memory current limit between 7800xt and 7900gre 35A vs 25A, they unlock the slider but lock max current...
so just yesterday Wendell from Level1 did a review of the Sapphire Nitro+ and pointed out a few features I had no idea about.... first off the card actually had an extra FAN HEADER AND RGB HEADER !!! ... this blew my mind for some reason.... when was the last time you saw a GPU with the ability to add a 4th fan, let alone connect some rgb doo-dads to control through the same software?? that's just extra and I like Sapphire's thinking (made me wonder if their other models have this too... do you see any on your Pulse??) second, they make it super easy to replace the fans, just in case you keep yours for a bit longer than you expected and0 time becomes your enemy (as if it isn't already lol) and of course they see the replacement fans too I presume
and third they have some upscaling software of their own called TriXX that also does a few other things too... Wendell seemed to have high praise for it in some instances compared to FSR... now I'm not sure if this was for all sapphire cards or just the Nitro+ .....
also the dual BIOS switch has a third setting that lets you switch between the 2 BIOSes in software, which is pretty awesome because who wants to open their box just to make sure their OC'ing doesn't brick the card LOL
Asrock 7900 GRE steel legend after extreme extensive testing. 2700 MHz core 2376 MHz memory 995 millivolt plus 15 power limit is absolute true stable. I can get a lot higher numbers here and there and they seem to be stable but I will get crashes in games. The settings I posted above I have no crashing
My guess for the memory unlock is that it was aiming to boost AI related performance more than gaming performance.
Was planning on getting the Rx 7800 xt ..but I will just go for the gre .. my 5 year plan

I have the Gigabyte version of the 7900 gre. This card has Samsung memory and I haven’t been able to push it past 2390mhz. My time spy gpu score is 22.5k which is average I guess
Why in Ghost of tsushima minimal recommended Radeon rx5500xt, equivalen for Nvidia gtx960 4gb (recommended in game min.) is rx480 and his have 8gb? Not only in dat game.
Because AMD no longer officially supports cards older than the rx 5000 series outside of security updates. The gtx 900 series gets minimal updates, but nonetheless is still officially supported by Nvdia.

It was a great GPU for £500 before the unlock 5 weeks ago. For the price and performance it is far more valuable than the 4070Ti super and even the 4080.
I went for the Sapphire pure white and love it. I even gave our 6 year old my 7700 xt so I could justify the GRE purchase and both combined are still less than Ngreedia would charge for a 4070Ti Super or 4080

For those cards in 1440p the gpu will still be the limiting factor, the 5600 will be enough.
Next time you upgrade to a even stronger gpu, then you will want a better cpu.
My steel legend black screen at 2450. No matter what, even at the suggested 2390 I still get weird random black screens. I can max out the core and never see a black screen as soon as I start messing with the vrm past 2316 black screens. Random typically on desktop or like steam is open or something not during games. 2436 is the highest. I can get it to go without a black screen crash during gaming or benchmarks. Fur Mark gives me the best point score at 2390/2400

Well you should OC with MEM + Fast Timing + Core...you can land somehwere between 10-15% FPS boost...OFC a MEM OC only will not net you 10% FPS

IDK, if I was in the market right now I would probably toss in the 120 bucks or so and get the 7900xt since the 7900GRE is just the crippled version of it. So I would uncripple the GRE and get more vram in the first place. ATM prices are still tough though but not as brutal as in the mining boom (remember the prices of a 3080??). I think a good 1440p card with 16GB vram should be 350 - 400 IMHO. On the other hand I think the Game-Devs could really make their games shine with dedication to optimizations instead of: buy more raw power and eat the software-bugs.
The problem with that argument is if you did that you would then be close in the 7900xtx and 4080 Super price area.
@@ZackSNetwork I know my reasoning is flawed and would only prevent buying a 4090. Yeah, be happy with what you have and only upgrade if there is a game or there are games you REALLY want to play and your gfx/monitor combo is holding you back.
Sadly allot of cards don't let you overclock it much at all.
If you got the crappy samsung memory like mine, you'll not even get a stable 2400.
2300 with tight timings is the best that could be done, common trend with allot of them.
I was really really hoping the gre was hiding a rabbit in the hat with the oc.
Others tended to get better results. Increasing the power limit and undervolting combined seem to create the best outcome, more like a 7-8% result on average.
But, as with every overclock, it's all gonna come down to the sample you end up with. Maybe they got lucky with better samples, or maybe stability was easier to get in a different climate.
Also many testers use 7800X3D CPU's and this could also have an impact.
No outcome is less valid than another. It just shows there will be variation in your results based on your system and the time you invest into tuning the overclock.

hey, i'm new with AMD and have already bought this gpu, he radeon rx 7900 gre Sapphire. But i get less fps than my old gpu ( 3060 ti 8gb). I have done research about settings, but i still get low fps in games like, call of duty and battle field V. On my 3060 ti I got around 100 - 150 fps and on the 7900 gre only around 60 with 100% usage.

7900 gre in stock form should absolutely stomp the 3060. 60fps sounds like a frame settings cap. My housemate had a siilar issue when he bought his 6750XT. there was a setting in windows display settings applying the frame cap. he looked everywhere for it in adrenaline drivers and it wasn't in there, but in the windows doisplay settings.
It is a good thing that the 7900 GRE costs about the same as the 7800 XT though of course both are too expensive for what you get. You can pick which limitation you find less problematic: the small GPU of the 7800 XT or the memory-bottleneck (only a 256-bit bus, a lower memory bandwidth than the 7800 XT) of 7900 GRE which will limit the performance on some games. I myself prefer to pass on both. Hopefully RDNA5 comes fast, RDNA4 is another generation with only 1 die and cuts of it, like the 5700 XT and RX 580. Maybe even worse (even smaller than 260 mm²) if the predicted diesize is correct.
Harbour Unboxed achieved gains between 7-13%. Maybe you run into ECC errors?
I keep thinking about that too. I wonder whether he received a special reviewer's sample or maybe it is the Sapphire Nitro+ version of the card that he used. Or maybe just the silicon lottery. Hard to know.
@@marks9233 Bryan's conclusion is simply wrong. If the 256-bit data bus is too narrow, if this is the bottleneck, so any OC on VRAM will bring noticeable performance gain.
No different than internet speeds. I have fiber. The speed gaurentee is only in the fiber network. Once you link outside that network your speed is only as fast as the slowest speed between you and whereever the link resides. It is much faster than what I had, but rarely as fast as you think it would be.
Yeah I honestly figured there wouldn't be a real point in OCing the memory. AMD was right to lock it in the first place.

My 7900 gre pure with mem oc set to 2400 (fast timings) gives +15 fps in RDR2 at 2k versus the default (non oc). So its also about the games / engine.
Also here at least, the cheapest rtx 4070 s is about 60-70 eur more expensive than 7900 gre, like the lowest tier 4070s.
Hynix memory on the Pure OCs better than Samsung memory on the Asrock model he tested, but yes, fast timings and undervolting core a bit is the way to go

Would you believe me if I told you I can do make it up to 21.0Gbps?;) I have the gigabyte oc version! It’s not stable at 21.0 but mine will stay stable at 20.8Gbps.
I don’t really believe that it is stable in everyday use, I have nitro + version with hynix memory and it is unstable even at 2460 when using a browser, in games it’s fine sure, but if I only play games 2660 is stable too, but in everyday use it’s unstable, I hope for a fix from amd, I filed a detailed bug report
Still a used RTX 3080ti (about the same price) is a better deal. Less VRAM but way faster VRAM and faster core too.

That 2450mhz memory OC is pretty terrible, anyone else can get at least 2600mhz with little effort... something seams off.
7900GRE memory modules are actually 19gbps chips downclocked to 18gps so they should run better than that.
I can get 2750mhz bo problem on my 7900XT, yes I know it's starting from an higer speed, but still...
7900 XT memory modules are obviously better binned. That is why they are clocked higher at stock. Looks like AMD released GRE version just to use defected 7900 XT chips and underspeced GDDR6 modules.
Nobody can guarantee that a certain card will work at higher memory speeds that stock ones. It is a lottery. One sample can gain 100 MHz, the other one - 200 MHz and so on.
+1000 MHz on 4070 Super is also not the best result. I saw much better results, like +2000 MHz or even more. You are just lucky, if your GPU can do better than average.
Also I am leaving games on for a few hours at a time after I have achieved what I feel is a stable clock, very easy to run some short benchmarks at higher speeds and claim numbers, versus gaming for a while.
IT's just AWESOME, *Bought one 4 months ago, for just €569,- ! And NOW got it up to 2520Mhz and 19,8 Gbps STABLE !* and now it performs (almost) as an 7900XT ! ( €779,- ! )

AMD would’ve gotten less flak for these cards if they’d called the “7800XT” and “7900 GRE” what they actually were - the RX 7800 and RX 7800XT, respectively.
The 7900xt is also the 7800xt as well the whole card lines are up by one tier.

Waste of time and money just buy a 7900xtx.
Of course test done with intel cpu and I am more than sure it was without SAM enabled. So AMD is losing around 10-15% performance because of your choice. And yes, Radeon gpu is getting much more performance from SAM enabled than nvidia, especially if you OC your gpu.
SAM is on, but I will be swapping over from the i9 soon back to an AMD on my test bench, as I am tired of using Intel's newer CPUs personally. Just all the stability issues people have been reporting. I haven't experienced it myself but it is a test bench system so it doesn't get used as a main rig.

No, I have been using them and recommending them for years, youtube has just been shadowing my channel, nothing I can do about it really.
I will continue on for a while, though if sponsors drop off etc. then I will just go and work with my mates out on construction.

AMD really needs to loose that trend where its GPUs are totally locked in term of overclocking...
Not only the GPU are not locked in term of OC, Nvidia is the one not supporting OC at all since you can't OC any Nvidia GPU officially without a 3rd party software...

The 4070 super is $599 and frequently on sale for $549, same price as the gre. Me and the majority of buyers are going to go nvidia for the nvenc encoder, ray tracing and dlss.

A 4070 super for 550 is crazy
- Lack of features (RT/DLSS)
- Horrible "video playback" power consumption (40+W @ RUclips/Netflix/VLC etc.)
- Useless "chiplet" architecture (unstable UV/OC)
- OverPriced (need a 10% discount, URGENT!)
So, that's why No One is buying the AMD RX 7900 series & the GRE !
