Practise and use a song key to work out expected chord structures and extensions, then work out what scale to use for those chords (g chord in cmaj could be spelt GBDFA which would be solo'd over using a mixolydian scale)
Once you get comfy with that admittedly hard concept you can try break the rules , like using different extensions for colour / surprise
