I just put together a similar deck. 9.0” anti hero Russo deck with Indy Stage 11 Hollow 149s, those same OJ Elites, and Bones rails. I’m 51 and getting back into skating after 35 years off. Built a pair of mini ramps and a curb/ledge in my backyard as a DIY skate park, using your videos as inspiration. Thanks for all you do.
I wasn’t sure either, but it fits quite nice. Maybe a quarter inch in on either side, and the wider OJ Elites fill it out better than my Spitfire Formula Fours.
This has been my setup for about a year and I love it so so much! 8.75 deck with 9in aces, big wheels and 8th in risers so beautiful. I love ur videos so much, best RUclips skater out there
Great video, Ben. The rails take me back to the 80's!! We had a pvc pipe setup in my friends garage, which was super fast on rails. There may or may not have been WD40 on it...on fire sometimes...omg, so crazy fast!! 🤣
Thanks Ben! Another awesome video. Those Cotton Candy rails look like a reincarnation of Schmitt Stix Type II rails from the 80s which were amazing. So happy to see these.
Dunno about the wheels. There's a reason curb skaters have embraced sub-50mm wheels like those Boardycakes makes: it's not just 'big pants, small wheels' nostalgia, the small size actually makes popping the wheel up onto the curb easier when doing noseslide to crooks and the like. I learned those last year on a set of Spitfires I'd rode down to 39 mm but struggled again when I got a new setup. What also helps is if the wheel has a more rounded transition from side to bottom on the outside - I'd got the very angular Spitfire 'OG cut' shape and could feel the wheel snag every time I wanted to do a noseslide crook, so I ended up ditching those for a smaller, 'classic' shape instead.
IMO preferred wheel size and shape really depends on what slappies you do and how big the curbs you skate are. Little ass wheels are good for crooks and nose slides, sure, but try getting into slappy 50s and smiths on a tall curb and you'll find they're a lot harder. As a counter point, look at skaters like Jason Adams, Ryan Townley, Bevup, Ace Pelka, etc who all skate curbs using 56-58mm conical shaped wheels.
@@maxsanchez764 different for everyone. I thought curb skating was lame when I was a kid and just wanted to kickflip and ollie gaps and stairs and stuff
I've found that wheels of that size inhibit getting into the slappy grind (a smaller wheel rolls up the curb into the slappy more easily). I'm not completely sold that the "lock in" shape of the wheels actually helps but seeing you lock in on a few of those slappies is beginningto convince me. Shred on!
Watch Nathan Bevup Ko and see what he can do with big wheels. He rides 60mm Spitfire Classics. Especially checkout the curb game of SKATE he played against Ace Pelka at the Berrics.
Interesting, a smaller wheel for me is scarier for slappy’s especially on narrow curbs because sometimes you slip over the top because the edge is too rounded to get a really solid lock in. Still works but super scary.
Awesome lil setup. I was gonna say the rails were setup fine there, but then remembered it was an 8.75 with all that concave 🤣 Fun lil sesh, must've been a while ago. Thought it snows a lot up there 🌨☃️⛷❄

I recently popped rails on my decks and don't think I can ever go back! I find myself skating really crusty parking blocks and it's so great to be able to boardslide them without much more than a bit of wax. Awesome set up!
I’m glad you mentioned the distance on where to place the rails. For me, I like to measure a three fingers from the edge of the board going in. I feel that’s a good tipping point.
Thats a great set up. I started using rails again a couple of years ago for the first time in probably 20 years. Never going back. Glad to see you getting those board to hurricane combos.
You can move those Candy Bars. If the tape peels just put it back on as straight as you can and reapply. Awesome video dude. I didn't know you pulled out of the Canada Skate Shop deal thing. Oh well dude. You still rule.
love how wider boards flip slower... looks soooo much cooler than with a skinny setup !!! i got a 8.75 with them wheels and its a great ramp setup. ps im using a driver in future !!!!!
I just upgraded to an 8.75 with a 15" wheelbase and I think I actually prefer the longer wheelbase. I much prefer the 8.75 over the 8.5 I was skating previously. Feels much better under the feet and I feel like I can ollie better on it because my front foot catches the whole deck with the 8.75 rather than just the edges
Tensor Mag lights (-90 grams, slides even unvaxed curbs) + board rails (+90 grams) + Powell dragon wheels (93A that slides) + whatever board you prefer = street destroyer that weights as regular skateboard. Add some thin riser pads to better absorb rough streets if needed. Thank me later.
My dude! Premium slappage! Your rail placement looks spot on for mix up grind and slides. Play with it more while being stationary. From boardslide, fully lean on your heels or toes. Go full Michael Jackson or cartoon character skid stop until you touch the wood. You should be able to balance on it like that (or even do boardslides like that if you’re feeling silly). From there, do the awkward old lady mall walk shuffle until one of your trucks make contact. It should go right to the grind with no effort or wheel bonk.
I tried rails on my ramp board and had to take em off. I ended up with divots in the middle. They slid well but were no good after a week or so. I board slide a lot for setting up, so bare board works best for me. Also them big wheels are hindering popping into the combo grinds. The small wheels in the 90s were great for the nose slide grind slide grind stuff. Love your stuff!
Curb skating is super fun. Two of my previous boards had Ace 55s and 56mm Ojs and Spitfires. Rails would likely assist you better if they outside edge of the rails were in 1.5” from the edge of the deck.
Those rails are nice! I use grey Santa Cruz ones because they're only 14" long as opposed to many others that are 14.5" which I feel are too long for 14.25" wheelbases. The rounded over outer edge and "double sided" tape included on the Candy Bars is a very nice touch. How long are the Candy Bars?
I also just setup a curb/mini board of sorts. I went wild with the shape though with a Welcome Dark lord shape. I also have never used rails and also put them too close to the edge.
I honestly expected to be surprised and see ben with some slappy trucks. they look so similar to aces that that was my first thought. slappy trucks for a curb setup sounds fitting lmao
Crob said he drills the rails in with drywall screws all the way through the other side and breaks them off with a hammer then sanding and then put the grip on...but yeah love the channel
I had rails (and only time)on my very first board which was a jeff grosso knock off (alice in wonderland) from like toys r us or something back in 1992. Man i would love to rebuy that board even tho it was a fake. So many memories.
Does the truck width resist the flips (moment of inertia) a little more than the deck size? They're holding those healthy wheels out wide like an ice skater swinging dumbbells 😂
Rails are really cool for boardslides and combos and whatnot, but nothing is worse than missing the lock in on a fs slappy and getting into fs board and eating shit. I always get PTSD skating a double sided curb with rails lol
I was in Canada recently for 4 days for the new year and wanted to try out some of the spots you’ve shown, but it was literally either raining or the floor was just wet, I was so sad.
so good skating, as allways. I allways seen and hear that for curves/slappy setups it's better with small whells, like 52mm or less. Do you recomend bigger wheels? like 55 mm + ? thanks!
I cut my own board from a blank I bought locally specifically for a kerb set up (U.K. kerbs are crusty af so they spell them differently 😂). Initially I opted for a 57mm wheel for a good lock in but I’ve gone down to 52-53 conicals and still lock in well. 8.75” board, 32.25 length, 14.5 wb, 9” slappy trucks, some cheapo nasty rails and that’s about it. Definitely prefer the wider truck with a slightly narrower board, the smaller wheels make getting up on the kerb easy, the pinch on slappys is as good as a thunder imo. Lower, wider rig for kerbs seem to work well for me but your mileage may vary.
Would it be better for curbs with smaller wheels? I'm thinking of getting 51mm 100a OJs. I'm surprised you didn't talk about how OJ's are the same guy from Spitfire. I just found that out.
I've mostly dropped boards on tranny since taking off rails. It's counter-intuitive, but when rails slide even on rock fakie, you just accept that you're always boardsliding 👌
That little chuckle of joy when you got the first boardslide to hurricane was nice to see. Skateboarding just feels so good.
