Over here in iceland they are considered "bad eating" and "poor people food" so there's an ethnic stereotype saying only polish people eat it. Wich is ironic because our national fish haddock had the esact same stereotype with us as the focal point instead of the polish. The consept of "trash fish" is stupid and almost always racially charged.

Polish people are the largest Immigrant population here so they got hit with all the standard immigrant hating stigmas that exist in almost every country, the boomers were the last to grow up poor enough to actually need to get free fish but they did so by going to the harbour when fishing boats came back and asking for food on the table and they usually got a bag full of fish that the fishermen couldn't sell for any number of reasons but notably they had a selection of fish to like and dislike, nowadays you can't really just go to the harbour ask for a bag of fish you might get something but not frequently enough to support yourself, however if you go fishing on the harbour you're practically guaranteed to get a shit ton of mackerel and all the first generation polish imagrants with little money to their names knew how to cook it so it tastes good so while everyone's growing up with enough money to be picky eaters you have polish people fishing for food in plain view catching the only thing there is to catch something Icelandic parents didn't know how to make taste good at a time when a lot of older people were making xenophobic coments and jokes so it stuck as a stereotype and because there was truth to it people perpetuated the stereotype even when they had no negative intent partially because thats just what dad or granpa says. A lot of polish people who don't need to fish to survive nowadays still fish for food because its what they grew up with or they just want some delicious fresh fish so I doubt the stereotype will go away any time soon.

Scottish fisherman here, once pulled over 250 mackerel for the pike bait for the winter, was handing them out to friends and local anglers, we got to the point where we were just fishing for fun and throwing them back, the fight on a full sabiki rig is some of the funniest shit I’ve done, we started to chuck them back and the Chinese guy fishing next to us screams “WHYYYY?!” Turns out he was a local restaurant owner 😂😂
Here in Poland smoked mackerel is sold in stores and it's delicious. You can even make a spread with that: you need hard boiled eggs, onions, smoked mackerel, mustard, mayonnaise, pepper and salt. It's delicious.

It's in his Japanese home cooking book if you can't find it online. I would eat it all the time if mackerel was easier to find in my landlocked home state.

From the Philippines here Bantayan Island. We have this dish called kinilaw which literally mean raw food. We slice them thinly, put coconut vinegar or sugar cane vinegar, salt, you can add scallions, ginger, tomatoes. Mix them together and eat them after 3-5 mins.

Vinegar and lime/lemon juice are not the same...the concept of cooking a raw protien, might be similar....but comparing ceviche and the Filipino dish as being the same thing, is inaccurate. Here in the Netherlands you can buy a whole smoked mackerel in pretty much every supermarket.
Its fresh in all UK stores? Its either fresh whole fish or filiets that have been heavily peppered.

From the Philippines here Bantayan Island. We have this dish called kinilaw which literally mean raw food. We slice them thinly, put coconut vinegar or sugar cane vinegar, salt, you can add scallions, ginger, tomatoes. Mix them together and eat them after 3-5 mins.

@Panzer_ze_tank nope. Ceviche uses citrus, and the acid from that helps "cook" the raw fish. There is no vinegar used in ceviche at all.
In the dish OP is talking about, they describe using vinegar. Vinegar and lime/lemon juice are not the same...the concept of cooking a raw protien, might be similar....but comparing ceviche and the Filipino dish as being the same thing, is inaccurate. Like, yikes.
In denmark, mackerel are categorised one of the best eating fish. We are actually known for smoked mackerel 😅

Sometimes, i think, it's not that the fish is the trash, it's the Americans that is trash. Well, the nuances being that the Americans i described here are the ones that have said those fish are trash fish, not the general Americans. Well maybe most of general Americans as well considering America invades other nation for resources, the people love their government. And not too mention the degenerating society.
At this point, there's only select few Americans that aren't trash. So my early statement IS for general Americans after all. 😅

As an Asian, you're correct as I'm a Singaporean and in every hawker centre, the Japanese stall always sells "Saba fish set" which is mackerel cooked on a hot plate with rice and miso soup
Rub salt in those cuts on the sides. Grill them. Mix olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, and lemon juice in sauce pan. Heat just to meld flavors. Pour over fish. Enjoy!

Jamaicans loves mackerel fish. Especially when it is cooked down in coconut oil, seasoned with tomato, onions, thyme, black pepper, scotch bonnet pepper with boil dumplings. That's like living like a king

mackerel in tomato sauce is really common in sweden, you can buy it in canned form in every food store.
If you like tunasalad, you can use mackerel instead of tuna, but because its a strong fish i suggest adding more things like peas corn ect. Mackrel can is cheaper per ounce and with the added ingredients you can make it more healthy
This actually is my favorite fish to eat, especially when fresh. Recently moved to a new place and one of the greatest benefits to live here (not only one) is I can actually get fresh mackerel here and fresh fish in general. Its not available everywhere

I love mackerel, i catch them quite often around the UK and they are a nice oily fish full of all that goodness that keeps people healthy. Very similar to tuna and other fish in the tuna/mackerel family.
In Sweden we fried mackerel with butter and dill. My grandma was great at that. In Greece they sundry it and then grill it slightly. I forgot I'm half Greek half Swedish 😊.

Mackerel is one of my most favorite fishes. Take a white Turkish bread, cut it in half and open the half. Put grilled or fried mackerel fillet, thinly sliced raw onions, parsley, (if you have add rucola/arugula), lemon juice and sumac... Amazing food

In Denmark we love mackerel! They are really abundant along our cost line. Smoked mackerel is probably the most popular. Canned mackerel with tomato is a stable in most homes. When I catch them myself I prefer frying them with salt, pebber and butter. Serving them on ryebread with remoulade(a danish condiment)

Mackerel are amazing! Easy to remove bones and full of light, healthy oil. I recently introduced my parents to how easy and tasty they are and now any time I visit they want me to make mackerel for them.
Romans used mackerel and herring to make their fish sauce called garum … it was as practical for them as olive oil in their diets. Seems like ancients had fish as a staple in their diets

In Greece we love mackrel. We usually salt it and smoke it and use eat it as a side dish with ouzo, raki or tsipouro.
Mackerel is great cooking fish, nice taste and rich in omega-3 fat-acids. We eat them here in Norway as well. Small/young ones we call "Pir" and are considered to be the best. Edit; they are actually related to Atlantic bluefin tuna.

I think most of northern Europe eats makerel. In Denmark, makerel in a light tomato sauce is very commonly eaten with rye bread.
