"WASHED OUT?!?! Boomer... He couldn't make the big times, so now he thinks he can pass judgment on some real hero's kids, huh?! Oh, it's a power trip, Will! That's all it is! Sonic Boom? Try Gym Teacher Man!!!" Kurt Russell was perfect for this role.
I love this scene. It's just great acting. Will's friends being more thrilled by simply meeting Will's father instead of projecting their insecurities of being a sidekick to him. Will's dad looking mildly disappointed but trying his best to not show it. Will picking up on his subtle body language to tell his father isn't perfectly ok with the situation. Will's father trying to understand the situation by questioning him in the least offensive way possible. Just shows his own agenda while also trying to not be disrespectful and Will trying to make his father point out his own classism.
It’s not classism. The movie literally started out with Will misleading his father to believe that he awakened his powers when really it was all a trick. So of course his father freaks out about him being a sidekick. His dad didn’t lie about being okay with his son being a sidekick. The difference is Will didn’t choose to be a sidekick, it was his only option left if he wants to stay in school. People saying Will’s father is the hidden villain of the story when Will really was just a late bloomer.
I do too. But it's Will that's the problem. He knows he doesn't have powers like Josie [Mother/Jetsream] and Steve [Father/The Commander] and he should've told them but his parents were rushing him like, "Will you need powers!" "Will you just need superpowers!" With his parents that have superhuman abilities, it must be really hard to tell them the truth. Plus, I don't why Will's sidekick friends: Magenta, Ethan & Zach including his girlfriend Layla were staring at him.

Back when Disney TV movies had that dark undertone and clear messages that develop into the MCU so well solidified. Fact is I say this. The FACT My hero REWROTE EVERY CHARACTER and still had a solid parallel to DISNEY's events between 2000-2020 is amazing. From the Star Wars references, to the Xmen Boom AND the fact Spiderman IS the big cheese of MY Hero MCU just great. Simply because you CAN'T make this stuff up, it REALLY IS a coincidence and the great thing I love about its homage, the Rocky Balboa Statue of Allmight AND Allmight having a true blue look to Snake Pliskin himself, Kurt Russell AND almost Shazam like power mixed with DBZ style physics (i.e. the more you use, the more damage on your body... like real world but you know what I mean). Where DBZ was a journey to the west, My hero IS a journey to the western comic life. I mean the great thing about all that IS there is no retcon, no rewrites, NO unfaithful adaptations with weird political undertone messages. Just a great story and characters.... that happen to parallel what's going on in modern day.
Yeah, maybe they should reboot this into something a lot less silly. By that, I mean make the heroes act like heroes, have better camouflage(Medulla's Paper Lantern excerpt), and let Will be a lot smarter.
This is a great scene. I especially love how at the end Will corrects himself when he says "I'm proud to be a sidekick. Actually, I'm proud to be hero support." ❤️💛💚💙💜
Makes me wish he stayed non-superpowered.. him being the son of successful supers but still finding a way to be strong in his OWN way without their passed down powers would've made for a interesting rest of the movie
@@numberone2676 Still better than how Hotel Transylvania 2 handled it. The problem wasn’t so much that Dennis was part monster all along, the problem was that outside of the climax of part 2, he never gets to use his powers again the the other films. Seriously WTH. At least will got to use his powers.
Will kinda stook up for his friends to his dad when he said he was proud and I really love that they didnt do a cliched “we’re proud of you man” thing when he went back to his friends. Just a subtle acknowledgement of comradery and friendship between all of them. His friends admiring his courage, appreciating his defending of them, and then back to business as usual as friends. Good stuff. Makes me smile.
And I think he wouldn't believe Will if he(Will Stronghold) said that he was dating Layla. Remember 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'? It would be a bit similar.
This scene would’ve been better if the writers had Will tell his dad that maybe the reason why he didn’t have his powers is because of his mentality growing up as kid going to regular schools made him just want to be normal like everyone else. And that he didn’t want to be a superhero like his parents and be like his dad who has an ego who kept expecting great things from him and just wanted to be loved as a normal kid and as their son.
I’m realizing that Will letting his dad think he had super strength and durability was really dangerous, he’s lucky he lasted that long without his dad killing him accidentally
I think this scene can be a really intriguing case study in bigotry. The dad came home, fully expecting his son to be with people that he prefers him to be with. But when he learns what they actually are, he immediately becomes evasive and retreats. He tries to distract himself from his fears by avoiding everyone. The son comes in, already suspecting his father's true thoughts towards his kind of people. The son starts testing his dad by slowly questioning his thoughts and the dad puts on a flimsy facade to keep himself looking good. He compliments the people he secretly frowns upon but also adds sinister undertones, as if to convince his son that they're still the better people despite him being friends with the "lower people". He might do this not only because he wants to see if his son might agree with him, but he's also subtly warning him "Don't tell me something that I don't wanna hear". As they get closer to the reveal, the dad desperately prolongs the conversation just to hide from the truth as long as he can, knowing he can't maintain denial for long. And then finally, when the truth is revealed and there's nowhere to run, the dad flip-flops and goes full bigot mode. He begins berating someone that he had just said positive things about and starts enforcing his bigotry on his son without restraint. He takes advantage of being his father just to make his son submit to his perspective. . And then, the second truth that his son is officially one of the lower class is revealed, and the dad is taken aback. He was not prepared for it at all and has no idea how to react to this nightmarish reality. He then pitifully goes back to his facade and comforts his son over his terrible situation. But the son knows better, and his father's true nature is all but clear. As the final nail in the coffin, the son declares his proudness to be among the supposed "lower class" and leaves, proving himself the bigger man. And only then, the bigot goes back to being a father and realises how badly he fucked up. He chose his radical opinions over being a good rolemodel and it may have ruined his reputation forever. This must be a really relatable situation that people have gone through with somebody they've known for their whole life, and it's made them truly question how much they don't actually know about the person in question. To be honest, if find the Commander to be a bigger bigot than even Magneto. Magneto was exposed to the worst of humanity and he built his hatred for humans based on his trauma. The Commander simply chose to consider the sidekicks as a lower people just because he was a hero and he let his pride shape his terrible behaviour.
