This is incredible. Have been binge-watching your videos and learning so much. Quick question - Why is it that in the shadow part of the curve, decreasing the curve increases saturation, but in the highlights increasing the curve increases saturation? Thanks in advance!
I’m really glad the videos are helpful! As for the first question goes, that is a very good note as I did notice that behavior also. I think that is because of how this composite mode operates under the node. Will do some research and find out why that is.
Really great questions Eric. I’ve been working with subtractive HSV for a while now and I find it optimal for the kind of work I do. I discovered this technique very recently and I haven’t fully adopted it in my professional practice yet. I would def say that if you are a curves type of colorist this is a great replacement and has enormous upsides. For me personally I work with the advanced and mini panels so I do prefer to work with my wheels. I think it really depends on the way you like to work. Hope this helps.
Nice one, very useful, didn't even know thare was thie composite node available now 🙂 "2 questions for you if I may, could you explain how you get to the middle grey pont in the curves? Second one, I have a sony a73 and set pp to Cine4 external and recored external with a BM videoassist (12g/SDI) in Prores 442, however when I check the metadata of the clip in for exa,ple Catlalyst Browse, it giving me 10 bit footage (great) but the color pofile is REC709, do you have any idea why that is? In Davinci I setup in color management: Timeline and output color space Davinci W/G Intermediate, I use 2 CST 's: Input Sony S-Gamut3.Cine,and Gamma: Rec 709, as OUtput color space and gamma I use the Davinci wide gamut. Obviously another CST with widegamut in and Rec709 out. My question is ..am I doing it correct like this? Thansk in advance!!
I used a DCTL to set the middle gray point in the curve. Alternatively you can also set your pivot point to .336 (if working in DWG) or .414 (ACESS). As for the second part I will make a new video on CM soon!
You say to update to 18.5 for the composite mode but can’t you do the same thing with layer nodes and a mixer? I realize it’s another step but a pretty easy one especially if you use shortcuts. Am I missing something?
why not use the Lum vs Sat Curve, it's designed to do just that?
Thank you. I hope there is a Middle Grey tutorial someday.
Thanks for this tips
Thanks for the lesson, good day
Thank you!! Really glad the lesson helped

A follow up question would be, how would you say this sizes up against subtractive saturation using HSV?

@@ColorGradeDigital Cheers, sounds good! Which DCTL did you use, is that free to download somewhere?

Yes, of course. That’s how I used to do it before the composite mode update. It’s just saves you the extra step now. Hope that helps!
@@ColorGradeDigital might want to update the video so ppl don't think they HAVE to update to 18.5 to make use of this technique.
Pls do a 18% gray tutorial bro❤️
A point a to z would be amazing
Will be working on a new color management lesson soon!
