  • Welcome to the first full length episode of The Deep Focus Show, where we review an entire director's filmography. This episode we cover Stanley Kubrick, one of the most influential directors of all time.
Clay also had some extra stuff to say about Paths of Glory that got cut out of the recording for audio reasons, here it is.
"And this will be the last trend of Kubrick’s war films. Hot take, he should have dropped this topic at this movie. The first part of Paths of Glory is very reminiscent to newer films such as 1917. You know I look at the production design and wonder if that film took influence from Paths of Glory. Like that film , Paths puts you in the chaos and disorder of war, unlike that film, this movie gives you the point of view of the generals and the corrupt administration behind the scene. One of the things Stanley Kubrick does in his war films it seems is make two movies in one. The first part being the corruption of generals in the middle of the stomping grounds of war, and the second being the aftermath of that corruption being showcased even more in a court room drama, which is shot with just as much precision as the base and battle grounds scenes."

Spartacus at 13 was a real breakfast club fist in the air moment for me personally but then to follow with Eyes Wide Shut makes me sad haha.

Yo Ryan! Start with 2001 , an epic tale of human evolution. Something more accessible, perhaps The Shining
Edit- Maybe A Clockwork Orange may be up your alley
