But this is what angers me the most, to this day, watching these excellent, early seasons of PD - how the producers and writers of PD wasted and ruined the show later on. And more than that, it angers me how the new producer, Gwen Sigan, ruined Jay's storyline in the last 3-4 seasons before his departure and wrote him an ending that was absolutely insulting to his character, and to Jesse's hard job that he did on this show for a decade! Jay became an almost totally different character from the middle of season 7 onward.
By the way, Antonio got a terrible send-off & terrible storyline in his last season too. And Antonio & Jay's friendship was equally wasted in later seasons even tho literally, out of the entire PD cast, Jesse and Jon, so Jay & Antonio, were the only ones next to Voight, so Jason, who started this spin-off (for people who don't know: PD is a spin-off of Chicago Fire in One Chicago universe). It was Jay and Antonio who were the only characters out of the PD cast, alongside Jason, who appeared on Chicago Fire, before PD was even filmed and aired.
This is how the whole OG Unit and PD started - from Jay being undercover on Fire, getting together with Gabby, Antonio's sister, and solving the case on Fire. As a thank you, Antonio rewarded Jay by recommending him to the Intelligence, to the newly forming Unit, which ultimately, became Voight's Unit. And Jay and Antonio were already friends on Fire, so they knew each other even before this. So Voight, Antonio, and Jay were, in fact, the OGS of the Unit, the main characters who started this whole PD thing, and Jay& Antonio's friendship was the oldest one in the Unit, only after Voight and Olinsky's. Yet later on, they were treated terribly, especially Antonio and Jay in their last seasons respectively.
I will NEVER forgive the new producer, Gwen, for this. In fact, I'll make sure to not watch any of her shows in the future, as she doesn't respect the characters & the original material, which wasn't even hers. The direction of PD turned awful when Derek Haas really gave up the wheel, and even tho was still a producer on the show, he wasn't the main guy who overlooks in detail the plots and makes the most important decisions. Haas invented the whole One Chicago Universe together with Olmstead, including PD, so he knew these characters and what he was doing the best. Gwen is absolutely awful as a showrunner!

Ah, this was the golden times of the original, brilliant Chicago PD, with the original team, and the show's tone and premise still intact: with the whole team being badass, and the criminal cases were dark but there was still fantastic humor on the show to balance it! It was the time when Jay was badass and had his trademark, sarcastic sense of humor, Voight was way more badass and ruthless than he is today, and Erin and Jay were a brilliant couple. The times when the whole Unit acted like a real family, going for beers at Molly's.
Nowadays you don't see as many or any really, private moments of the gang or them going out for beers, Voight is too bland and usually only pops up in the scenes when he is giving orders or he is behind the desk, and the new writers and producers completely ruined Halstead's ending and storyline, similar to Antonio's. Not to mention the action scenes are nowhere near as good as they were once. This is why I no longer regularly watch this show (since season 11, and I only saw maybe 4 episodes of this season), the current Chicago PD is nowhere near as good as it was in the past. And I miss the old team with this Jay, Antonio, Erin, and Mouse, the new characters are nowhere near as good.
The golden times of this show are seasons 1-6 and then the Infection crossover episodes at the start of season 7, after that it all went downhill. The humor disappeared, and the family/friendship vibe between all members of the unit disappeared also - most of the time in the last 4 seasons they only interacted with each other in duos like Atwater/Ruzek, Ruzek/Kim, Kim/Atwater, Jay/Hailey, when at the start of the show what was great is that they all interacted with each other in general, and that gave the feeling of the family. It is not there anymore. Not to mention how the new producers messed up some of the characters and their storylines.
In fact, Jesse Lee Soffer who played Halstead decided to leave the show, because he didn't like how they wrote his character and when Jay was heading in the last of his 4 seasons, since season 7. I found a few interviews with Jesse during the One Chicago promo day, from the last 4 years, and he is clearly saying there that he wants Jay and Voight to become closer - smth that seasons 4, 5, and 6 actually did - not butting heads, and the new producers that came on board exactly in season 7, clearly didn't listen to him and ruined it all. So no wonder he left after spending 10 years of hard work on this show, giving it his all, and then the new people who didn't even know these characters just f it up! No wonder Jesse wanted to move on, and given that the show is in absolute decline now, I say it was a good decision on his part.

    • @ToCam-fl8ry
      @ToCam-fl8ry Месяц назад +10

agree with everything you wrote, brilliant analysis! I watch season 11 now, so I can tell you that they now try to come back to the whole team interacting with each other and showing their private lives, finally, the producers got a clue about what the fanbase wants, but these attempts still fall short, and def, like you wrote, in seasons 7,8, 9 and 10, there was no personal interactions between the team as brilliant as it once were in the early seasons. The humor was gone as well, and the action, like you said, was not as good as in the past.
I got angry at how they ruined Jay too! I'm still angry! He was my favorite character for years, next to Muse, Al, and Voight, and the way they changed his character since the middle of season 7 or in season 8 was so stupid! He was always the badass ex-soldier who only butt heads with Voight over Erin, and it was exciting at the time, but he absolutely was on the same page with Voight already at the end of season 3. So the retcon and 180-degree turn they did regarding Jay, and Voight and Jay's relationship in seasons 7- 8, was so forced and stupid! This was part of the police reform theme on the show, that the events of Floyd's death and BLM riots forced upon the show, and the producers unnecessarily caved in under pressure. So stupid!

no, they don't. it's clear you don't watch the show. they make Voight look real, like most people are - in a grey area, neither a villain nor a hero. like a troubled, suffering cop who after years of being in a brutal, hard environment, because this is how this job is, is torn apart internally. It is a brilliant show, with brilliant action scenes, it is for the cops shows what Breaking Bad was for crime/mob drama. Or I should say - it was because people like you, who have no idea what great fiction is, and what a great character is, ruined it by complaining exactly like you here, in the media to the producers, and now, in its 11 season, this show is completely tamed and not what it once was.
Voight and the Unit were great, complex characters who were presented on the show as torn and having all kinds of dilemmas because this is how our world is in reality: grey, not black and white. And especially in the world of police vs criminals, it's not as easy and clean-cut as you think. Lines here are blurred, and that was/ is explored on the show because that is actually real, raw, and most interesting, in fact, this show brilliantly portrayed many taboo, important issues that other cop shows are afraid to touch - like racial profiling, with face recognition software.
not bland and fake like most cops shows always were and are now. these are the kinds of characters we in fact love the most - complex characters because humans are flawed, not perfect, and flaws are interesting, and that is great character study and great fiction. Exactly as Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul are.

@@teresakaminska5716 This show isn’t fiction. It portrays real world events that have been happening. Suspects being taken to black sites with no lawyers or cameras, cops torturing them for information and murdering them and covering it up. And this thin blue line coercion manipulates good cops into protecting bad ones and making internal affairs look like villains. This show portrays actual incidents and issues The Chicago Police Department has been involved in. It portrays these illegal and savage behaviors as necessary to achieve justice. When you get the badge, you take an oath to uphold and enforce the law. Any cop who can’t do that. Who are so bothered by criminals getting away that they’re willing to become criminals themselves to bring them down shouldn’t have that badge. The writers started to realize this so that’s why they changed the way the unit operates at season 11. Our world is black and white. You either follow the law or you don’t. Cops trying to act in the gray is how innocent people get locked up or killed. Even guilty people don’t deserve the sick punishment in this show.

      Where the
SERGENT OF INTELLIGENCE quotes from someone who was ratting on "CHICAGO " saying it:

More COPS are being killed nowadays just for doing a job,
      Which is the reason most

      "BOYS IN YELLOW."
Because there's a new war today:
      "A WAR AGAINST HOMELESS PEOPLE".
      Because they know the
      "WAR ON DRUGS/WEED"
WAS A WAR THEY HAD NO CHANCE OF EVER WINNING.
      But VOIGHT doesn't do that,
      (Not against HOMELESS anyway).
