"Legends... I'm 58 years old and their music has been with me since I was 13 and they will accompany me as long as I live. Dire Straits the No. 1 band in the world!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸❤❤❤
Around 1985, my dad popped in a cassette tape in the radio of our red BMW. He said "Listen to this, you'll like this" (Alchemy) What a trip that's turned out to be. Here I am, still committed and obsessed with every glorious note.
well, I´m nearly 60 years old, live in Germany and I first heard Dire Straits when I was in England as a young boy on holiday in 1978. I was flashed, as younger people would say nowadays, but I still fall in love with this music, when I hear it. Listen to just one song and I have to listen to the whole album. Thank God I was living at this time when Dire Straits became a great band. Thank you, Mark.
What I love best about Mark and particularly this track is that there are many live versions of it yet every time he manages to put a slightly different twist to it with his solo parts. To me, he is one of the best guitarists ever.
I thought id seen all the UK tv appearances. How wrong was I? marvelous. Pick is on it here, a truly underated drummer. I wish I had a time machine. . .
I'm old enough to have listened to all of their stuff when it was new, but never really paid attention. This year I've discovered how wonderfully musical Mark and his band were, and am glad to get to relive it now.
Epic! These guys dropped the greatest debut album in history. There should have been thousands of copycat bands, but nobody else can play like Knopfler!
This was not long after it had been recorded. Love Making Movies as a kid. I used to air guitar it. Then I got a guitar as an 18 year old many years later and have been addicted since! Always loved Mark's noddely licks
The big surprise would be Lions - Old Grey Wistle Test, TV Studio, Manchester, UK, 15th May 1978. Only you can bring this relic with the quality that is still not available anywhere on RUclips. May the spirit of the Sultans of Swing touch the hearts of those responsible for this wonderful channel.🙏🏻🎸🎸🎸😉
Lions! What a banger that is. In fact I have the tattoo of the lyrics on my arm. Was in a record shop earlier this year in Chester, UK where a teenager was buying the DS first album. I told him, "Great choice" and showed my tattoo. I totally regret that I didn't buy the vinyl for him. Should have done that.
I was young and had a good sound system in the car (Golf I GTI Cabrio), how much I enjoyed the good music we had available. Surely we (my peers) really got to experience the golden age of music, for that I am really very grateful.
I appreciate the effort to make it sound like the record, and the great direction by the bbc to feature the players at key points in the song. A treasured combination.
Dire Straits have been my favorite group of all time since 7th grade in ‘79/‘80. Favorite concert ever as well (November of ‘82). I can still just sit and listen to them for hours.
This song has amazing keyboard sections, which were originally played on the record by Roy Bittan (from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band). Alan Clark - who also does an amazing job - joined the band after the recording of Making Movies had already completed.
Mesmerizing performance!!!!! My favourite song from the album this came from. Romeo and Juliet was pretty good too though. This is my favourite line up of Dire Straits at a time when they were still fresh and raw with extreme talent. Love Pick Withers drumming here. Alas nothing lasts forever but lucky we have videos like this to go back to and capture some of the original feelings when first hearing this music. Great music lasts!!!!
My favourite Straits song and maybe my favourite song. Also the catalyst for me liking my other favourite artist Bruce Springsteen. I bought his Tunnel of Love album wondering if he had covered the Dire Straits song. Of course he hadn't but it started a love affair with his music too.
So natural. Crazy how good this band are. When you have songs written of this calibre, nothing less comes close. Mark Knopfler is astoundingly superb. A master of his craft. The band were full of brilliant musicians, whatever the current lineup was at the time. Of course there's no Dire Straits without Mark Knopfler. Virtuoso and rightly so regarded as one of the finest musicians/guitarists to ever grace this earth. 😊
What I really like about this video in particular is that it features a specific point in time where Dire Straits weren't the Arena Rock band with big shows and bloated songs, but they also weren't the soft rock straight killer band that survived the punk movement into the 80's. I might be wrong there, but the only original band members on this video are Mark and Illsley. They're closer to the album arrangements, but starting to drift away, trying to push more juice into songs. More videos from this show would be very appreciated. Thank you Dire Straits!
My favorite song ever
😍😍😍
Mine too
All or nothing small faces
All or nothing. , Small Faces😊😊
Together with Telegraph Road 😁
i am only 22 years old and i discovered dire straits couple years ago i have to say it is generational music can't get enough of them
Same here but 27 years old, now I enjoy it everyday, days like nights
When you're 75, this channel will still be uploading never seen before footage of peak Dire Straits.
EDIT to add: what took you so long? :-D
I bought this album when it first came out; it's still among my favorites.
God bless your good taste, bro.

I am 73 and they are my fav (esp. Sultans of Swing)
they move my soul
Old Grey Wistle Test was the best TV show for music lovers. Cheers from Brazil
100%. Check the word. Also the white room. God bless you from England
We need a show like this badly now. A great song from one of the greatest bands ever.
8 mins 51 seconds of musical perfection! My absolute fave Dire Straits song

Me too
Rock Away Rock Away

Mark est si bien.
Ah the underappreciated beauty of Picks playing...
The best song ever written
Better than "Sultans of Swing" and "Brothers in Arms"???😎
@xlcoldj yep, definitely.
Always amazing: the lush keyboards, the tempo changes, the “check it out” before a guitar solo
Mark’s outsolo is one of musics very best then the transition to the piano outsolo is so incredible and seamless. Brings me to tears everytime.
Telegraph, Tunnel and Money are the best Songs.... Absolute epic
I thought id seen all the UK tv appearances. How wrong was I? marvelous. Pick is on it here, a truly underated drummer. I wish I had a time machine. . .
At the end, one of the most beautiful guitar solos ever.
Mark Knopfler, guitar hero. 🎸
Intro too!
Timeless masterpiece.
Never seen that before. Excellent. No pomp and ceremony, just a really great band playing one of the most evocative songs ever…😊
They were all so good! Alan Clark's piano: stunning!
Mark: pure brilliance
It was sad how Alan was faded into the background after the '80 and '82 albums.
Fastastic song, fantastic band...Fantastic and Unique MARK KNOPFLER!!!!!!!❤🎸❤🎸❤
I love Dire Straits❤🎸
I'm old enough to have listened to all of their stuff when it was new, but never really paid attention. This year I've discovered how wonderfully musical Mark and his band were, and am glad to get to relive it now.
Fantastic! So much talent in every note! Dire Straits have a special place in my heart.
Królowie scen, którzy grali doskonałą wyjątkową muzykę 🎶🎸👏🎸👏🎸👏💥💯👍
Kocham ich od dzieciństwa. Miałem 7 lat gdy "Money for nothing" zabrzmiało w radiu i wtedy ich poznałem. Coś pięknego.
Epic! These guys dropped the greatest debut album in history. There should have been thousands of copycat bands, but nobody else can play like Knopfler!
An epic piece of music art in this whole half a century.
A melhor banda do planeta kk. Marcelo do Brasil 13 / 12 / 2024 . GRATIDÃO... ❤

Scirroco GTI...and away
Seeing Mark behind the piano is such an odd site 😳 Thank you, Dire Straits, for posting this lesser seen content!
It’s a frigging master piece!!!!!❤❤❤
I remember them from their first radio play which crossed over rock and country. Sultan 's of swing.
Brilliant band. Brilliant
Dire straits 👍👍👍👍👍
ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD FOR THIS UNFORGETTABLE BAND!❤❤❤❤❤
What talent !! Timeless ❤
Impresionante.
My Goodness this is HD+ ❤ beautiful 😍
Wonderful song, beautiful live version.
Love when they are both playing the piano in the beginning ♥️

Love this song, and this is as powerful version, best DS album too
....one of the Great bands of the late 70's....
Dire Straits have been my favorite group of all time since 7th grade in ‘79/‘80. Favorite concert ever as well (November of ‘82). I can still just sit and listen to them for hours.
Love the blue sneaks !!!
Una delle mie canzoni preferite. Intramontabile. È stupefacente questo eterno ragazzo.❤❤❤
Pure excellence.. Looks sooo loose but very tight, everybody's watching their bases..
Suits matching the guitars! Classy guys, those Straits.

Legendary Dire Straits - I'm so glad took a photo with Alan Clark recently.

The Spanish City meets Asbury - always fascinated by Springsteen using this as a title track a decade or so after. 🎉
@shaycostello888 and Roy Bittan played on the studio recording so there's that link too.
@ was aware - The professor. Both him and Max played on Bat out of Hell too. Different emphasis on theme in their TOL’s
@@chrisbloom382 Sid MacGinnis on second guitar!
