As the owner of a Vintage strat-style guitar I have to say without reservation they make some wonderful guitars that won't break your bank account, but play and sound wonderful. They also allow for making mods that just enhance the sound beyond belief. Run out and try one you won't be disappointed.
I was able to find a used one with a cool black pickguard. I've got 3 Vintage brand guitars including a Peter Green LP. Great demo. Here's info I found about each position: 1st position is the neck Strat single coil. 2nd position is the neck pickup with a custom special capacitor; it really captures the hollow-body jazz guitar sound. With overdrive you get the "woman sound." 3rd position middle position is neck and bridge with customized parallel wiring, offering a more contemporary take on the classic Tele middle position. 4th position is both pickups again but with a capacitor and resistor in a controlled state of reverse phase, giving you the in-between quack tone a lot like a Strat. 5th position is the tele bridge pickup.
The circuit will be a low pass filter, to thicken it up John. It will filter the highs out somewhat and let more low/low mid thru making it more humbuckerish. (However I think it is more P90 like as it still has that thinness a single coil gets that a HB cannot do!) I have a Tele I built with a similar 5 way wiring scheme, instead the filter is on the bridge pick up as a 4th sound and a SERIES wiring mod as the 5th sound. A Tele with both p/ups in series is a seriously GOOD sound dude. NOT enough manufacturers include this type of wiring arrangement!
Wow! This demo blew me away. A fantastic guitar and truly amazing playing, wish I could play anywhere near this good lol. I'll be watching this demo over again a few times for sure. I've been looking at the V62 models when they come up, maybe do a few mods to get one closer to the JD? Many thanks for this.. Truly inspiring. 👋👋
thank you for this review - my new Guitar ;) got it today from a local store - i was viewing and playing it, got verry convinced about its sounds, looks and feels. Especially the neck, it fits perfectly into my hand - that was the most important thing for me - the cool and clean look of her was the last thing to say :by me - played it for some hours now, no adjustments needed, nearly perfect intonation and well adjusted neck - sound well and versatile on a clean amp - greetings from germany - Thomas
Since this great review video got released I was thinking to buy one V58 JD. Now I ordered one before this model will go off the market (it got already a sort of hard to find in Europe). TWO MONTHS LATER: The promised flexibility of the guitar did not convince me. The "trickery" to achieve this flexibility comes with many disadvantages. I also did not like the neck pickup. I replaced the brittle 4.5k neck pickup against a 7k no-name strat pickup (which I had laying around at home) and installed a traditional Tele 3 way-switch circuit. I have 6 other guitars but this one I like most - it just doesn't want me to stop playing it. The neck is a dream to play, sustain is great, the action is ridiculously low and the whole product quality is top - especially considering the low price. Trevor Wilkinson did a fantastic job here. This guitar will stay forever with me :-)
Great demonstration. I saw Jerry Donahue a few years ago demonstrating his signature model. He was very happy to chat for a good while before the show. Very decent and polite guy. I've been a fan since hearing him with Fotheringay and seeing him with Fairport, Joan Armatrading , The Hellecasters. Made fantastic contributions to Gerry Rafferty and Proclaimers albums. Very sorry to think that we'll probably not see him playing live again but always good to hear him on so many recordings.
I just recently found out about Vintage and got myself a new Icon V6... I wish I knew about these sooner! It's my favorite stratocaster I've ever played. I upgraded an old Squier Strat with Wilkinson parts before with good success. It is my son's guitar. But man, I'm not looking at Squiers or Fender anymore. I want a Vintage Tele to go with my Strat!
I'll be doing a "Rig Rundown" at Bolinger's house in the next couple weeks. Keep on eye out. There may be a Mesa, Roar mic and ProTools involved. Whoops...."Rig Rundown" complete.
wow, vintage make some really nice guitars with intelligent features! i bought a thomas blug signature, and its amazing. this also seems like a great deal
+Rutger De Groot im sorry, I don't have a MIM strat to compare. a Friend of mine has a American standard, and the neck of the blug vintage is thicker an has a more round radius. I think it's very comfortable to play, I have big hands. if you can try one, check it out. the sound you can get from the vintage strat is amazing.
Great demo - no unnecessary arty-farty-flashiness. Just a brilliant varied set of demos, tones and licks. 10/10. In the 'Bonnie Rait' part of the sound demo, I also hear a pretty good likeness to Sonny Landreth. (8.23)
That guitar sounds great and I can't believe how cheap they are in relation to the USA Telecasters, of which I have one. However, you are an exceptional guitarist and I'm sure you could get a tune out of anything. I loved the couple of bendy country licks you played on the clip.
I always enjoy your reviews and Rig Rundowns. I miss my original Fender American Deluxe Tele. -- so I bought a G & L ASAT Classic Tele, along with an American Fender Strat HHS that are my main axes these days. If only I could play all those great licks you do John!
I have a Tribute Series ASAT Special, which I love. It is the only way to get the Jumbo MFD pickups with a mahogany body, and the combination is fantastic. I am going to mod it soon with a four-way blade switch and a slightly tweaked version of the PTB tone circuit; if I do not run into problems with ground plates, then I will add a pair of push-pull pots to give it 12 tonal options.
I know this an old video, but it’s pretty much the only TRUE review of this guitar, I just picked one up, how did you feel about the frets on it? Mine has very sharp ends
Sounds and Looks Great , but I can't understand Why The asking Price on these is More Than MSRP of $499. On Reverb some are Selling for$799 and some music shop place has them at $639. What tha Hell???
+mcafee1971 Idiots who THINK they can conn a noob that it's a Fender (Mex or cn) OR that it's the Fret King signature. As to retail price, a retailer CAN charge MORE than suggested mark up, but they will look like tight arsed, rip off merchants when some1 points out RRP is X instead of their Y price.
Very Nice! Great playing too! Have A Vintage LP V100 which is an absolutely incredible guitar for the $200.00 Cdn I paid for it a year ago. Heavy tho. About 14 lbs. Vintage are great guitars and have quite the variety. A Tele would be nice now after seeing this. Thank you. West Coast of Canada. - c
Great review, although I'd love to hear the bridge pup without the Pro Tools compression. To my ear, it's majorly compressed which hides the true character of the pickup in the guitar. If I'm wrong, not a big fan of that bridge pickup. I have loved the JD signature Fender, Peavey, and Fret King bridge pickups.
I want to put in a higher output dimarzio strat pickup in the neck and low output bridge pickup to get the opposite tone effect or just add Seymour Duncan vintage stack tele pickups with a four way switch
Haha, I bought one and the wiring was wrong from the factory or something. Positions 1 and 2 sounded exactly the same and positions 4 and 5 also sounded exactly the same - no difference whatsoever (not like this video). My best guess is the Chinese guys didn't know how to get the unique wiring right. However, since the guitars are made in China let us not forget they are not the most sophisticated guitar makers. It's too bad because the guitar on this video sounds great and I especially looked forward to position 4 (between neck and middle) for the humbucker type sound. BTW, I have another Vintage guitar that is better made.
I have a question. My pa left me his old Premier electric guitar from either the early 70's or late 60aaa' I can only find a serial number on it though so where did they hide the model number which is 2697? Thanks in advance
Hi Premier Guitar - Greatings from the small Land Denmark This review on the Vintage Guitar Jerry Donahue Signature V58 - started on maj 20 - 2016 ( now it is year 2020 ) - is very good. My queistion is however - what string type is on this guitar - and what string type is on the guitar when you order it from the factory - mayby it is the same ?
Can you even play guitar, John? Ha ha. I bought a cheaper Vintage brand Tele V62 and it's just what I wanted - a tele....but THAT one sounds better! Love your American hair.

Great demo, especially the opening piece "I can't Stop Loving You".I wasn't in the market for another Tele but now I just may be.
Phil Collins ? just kidding ;)

5th position is the tele bridge pickup.
Are you able to use a multimeter and see the output of the neck pickup? It's strange but mine says it's below 1.
@tosapwr Thanks for explaining. I'll be looking for a wiring diagram now. Amazing versatility.
The circuit will be a low pass filter, to thicken it up John. It will filter the highs out somewhat and let more low/low mid thru making it more humbuckerish. (However I think it is more P90 like as it still has that thinness a single coil gets that a HB cannot do!)

John, that rendition of "I Can't Stop Loving You" was terriic. Beautiful, man.

Great mastery of Jerry’s tecnicques by Mr.Bolinger who is a great string bender... this guitar sounds amazing in his fingers...

The one Tele to rule them all 🤘🏻
Hey John please do a review of the Vintage V6 strat style guitars!
I have one, a new one that J.D. gave me after he played it for a WE. The frets were already damaged...
Pretty impressive instrument!
Why did you change the neck pickup? Which the difference between the Wilkinson neck pickup and this Strat neck pickup?
Size only. Strat pickups are longer.
No change, this is a Wilkinson strat pickup designed for this guitar
Great sounding Tele!
Didn't know John was such good player, only saw him doing reviews,
Damn that was something! Great playing & a great review John. Can't find them for sale anywhere though?

HOLY SHIT, this sounds great!
I think he actually said the Fret King, the more expensive version by the same company, is the best. I'm sure this is really nice too though.
I noticed your "pick and three finger" style. Richard Thompson does that. Who originated it? Anybody know?
Wow! Sounds soo good!
I want to put in a higher output dimarzio strat pickup in the neck and low output bridge pickup to get the opposite tone effect or just add Seymour Duncan vintage stack tele pickups with a four way switch
So are these the same pickups that sell for 25 bucks on Ebay? I ordered a set for an 89 dollar Tele and wonder if this is what to expect.
GREAT PLAYING

How do these compare with Michael Kelly Tele style guitars?
Have any review demos with a Les Paul?!
Brilliant 👍
is this a better option than v52, for almost the same price?
john you are an guitar animal, real badass!
Hi Amazing guitar and sound..I'm sorry which pickups on that guitar?
Thank you so much
Wilkinson pickups.
Anyone know what gauge strings are fitted as from the factory - 9's or 10's and which work best?
A strat neck pickup in a tele....genius! Hasn't anyone thought of that before?!
I have had a texas special strat pickup in the neck of my tele for 20+ years.
It's spec' as having a 7.25 radius. What did he mean by the neck being "fairly flat?"
My question exactly! Have you found the answer the past 4 years? Because I haven't...
@@bartlescargot2485 same for me! No hint yet about the radius. I would like to have a budget tele with that 7.25 radius, if it were 7.25 for sure ...
It is not a 7.25. It is a 7”/14” compound radius neck.
nice intro playing.
Good Demo...
