I’ll be honest, with how the figures themselves were turning out and the constant repacks wave by wave, it’s miraculous the line survived and we’re at the point we’re at today. Great video boys, really appreciate the retrospective on the line.
I will say it was awesome seeing how much paint was on some of these figures! But yeah I agree, ultimately the line is a thousand times better. -Justin
Being someone who was in on the line since day 1, these waves worried me. Wave 4 also had a variant for Kylo: they made his robes shorter. It kills me when people know either say we get too many “repacks.” Repacks and repaints are totally different. Repacks are awful and I think the last one we had was Kenobi from his series. Now it’s not an issue. Repaints are usually better; same mold, different paint apps either to upgrade or to do different characters. Can’t wait until you guys get into the Galaxy time! But unfortunately, we gotta see that Rogue One stuff….
That Kylo also had a different lightsaber blade (more accurate)! Forgot to mention that. And you are absolutely correct. Repacks in mainline are actually quite rare! Nowadays of course we have Archive, but that's not taking away from anything in mainline like it was back in the day. -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement Yup and at least with Archive (at least the first few waves) they were photoreal updates and hard to find. Why repack Rey and Finn when you could literally still go to the store and get one. Same goes for Skiff Lando!!!
I love the Constable Zuvvio figure. I added some paint washes to the face and clothes to make the details pop. A big gripe I had with the figures at this time was the terrible articulation. Elbows not even bending to 90°. Some of them I've trimmed away plastic to get more range. Aside from X-Wing pilot Poe having a truly awful face sculpt; which must've been done by whoever made the Matt Daimon puppet in Team America, the paint was heinous too. On par with that for terrible face paint was Rey. My local Toys R Us had some bad ones, but there was one that looked horrific. The Kylo Ren fig got a couple of updated versions of his lightsabre and the hood and pattern on the robes changed
Yep the Constable is actually a decent figure! It's kind of hilarious when it comes to the amount of paint that was dedicated to that figure. X-Wing Pilot Poe is truly haunting. Tied with orange/blue line Obi-Wan Kenobi for worst face in the Black Series. And yep you are correct about Kylo! We mentioned the hood variant in the last episode of Retrospective I think but we forgot to mention the saber. -Justin
12:53 😂oh how I remember the online kerfuffle. Rey showed up in stores with no lightsaber and once people saw the movie they were furious! No lightsaber!? Then after the movie had been out a bit, the lightsaber showed up and people were furious!😂
Well guys, you actually did it. You talked about a Black Series figure I never even knew existed: the Resistance Trooper. What a bland figure. I know this era is rough when I see that I only own three of these figures: Captain Phasma, Guavian Enforcer, and good ol’ Constable Zuvio lol.
Oh man....what a flash back to an era of darkness! Never saw a Hux in my area at all either. I still have a Zuvio MOC...😅 I remember hunting for all these at toys r us alot back when mine had like an entire isle for star wars and a wall of BS figures. Poor Finn. Seems like both the character and the actor got the shaft in that whole situation. Keep it up boys, I enjoy these because I wasn’t really collecting at the time. It’s cool to look back and see how it was!
Atsy was my white whale during that particular wave’s release. Could not find it anywhere to save my life. If I recall it was one of the very few figures I had to resort to buying it from a scalper on eBay. Remember those days when we had retail release dates and between the hours of 7-9AM all the scalpers would flood the local Targets, Walmarts and GameStops buying up all the inventory with the intent of flipping online for profit? I think you may have commented before watching the video, lol. This is a video looking back at the line of 2015. Waves 2, 3, and 4 of the red/black box. The line is much, much better now, haha. -Justin
The repacks, it just occurred to me. Perhaps disnwy and hasbro thought that the figures would sell better given past star wars merchandise and disney like they do with all IP's they buy thinks that it'll just sell cause of the IP without putting in the effort and soul behind what made those IP's what they were. So hasbro had to clear out the old unsold figures by putting them into other waves. Pure speculation. But that wouldn't explain rey getting her lightsaber if the packages were already made up. So who knows haha
I'm sure they thought it'd sell a lot, which to be completely fair, it did. They were making bank on SW merch at this time. The hype train of TFA was real! I still feel like these were simply overproduced. -Justin
I mean it kinda makes sense to have the main characters be repackaged each wave in new trilogy series, but probably not when the stores were still filled with unsold Reys and Finns at the time... And when you start to repackage characters nobody care about like generic tie fighters ,you have a problem. They just really need to figure out proper ratios for the figures in the boxes they send to the stores... Like if you're doing a Mandalorian series, maybe have half the box be Mando and Boba Fett, then add a couple copies of the random characters nobody is going to buy like a random alien you see for five seconds in one of the episodes. Everytime I go to the stores it's always the same crappy figures nobody wants warming the pegs and it gets super old...
I can hear Obi-Wan’s voice telling the story of the dark ages of the line. 😂 “Before the dark times, before the repacks”. I also sold all sequel figures I had. I do not miss them.
I greatly remember these on shelves, its a time that isn’t well looked back upon, but is necessary for the history of the line. Another fine addition to the retrospective collection.
Hello Nate and Justin thanks for sharing your thoughts on the 2015 waves of the black series figures. I wasn't collecting Black Series Figures yet, I might have started in 2018 I think, difficult to remember now lol. I was only getting droids and aliens in the beginning, and I was happy. Then one of my friends gave me the Lando figure from Solo and I was thinking why ? Oh yeah he's on clearance at the Walmart that we worked at. I've never come near him, and strangely he's quite expensive on uk ebay...😮 I've managed to finally find a 40th anniversary Bespin Han moc, yesterday which (apart from X-Wing Luke foil) completes my entire OT carded character collection. It's been a bit of an odyssey as they have really mounted up both in numbers and financially. 13x ANH, 18x ESB, 24x ROTJ, 4x 50th, 4x POTF2 and a handful of others, all enshrined in cheap acrylic cases. Really have enjoyed hunting those down for reasonable prices, even if most of them now lie piled on the floor with nowhere to display them! 😅

I got the three of them for about $30 American so about ten dollars each, and I needed all three so a great deal for me. I also started black series collecting during the red and black box time but it was after the Star Wars 40th Anniversary. I had to find them on eBay and I never got all of them. I had actually stopped collecting black series in mid 2015 because of affordability and availability issues (I wound up seeing all of the 2015 blue box. Figures at Walgreens but nowhere else). When I went back to it in mid 2016, when my budget allowed for it again, I was able to get all of the TFA figures, yes, even Rey (in an out-of-the-way Kmart). point being that it was easy to get back into it with the first few waves of the red boxes being so easy to find.
The sequel TBS waves I considered the Dark Times of Black series collecting. I got rid of most of those in place of 3.75 to include Kenner vintage figures. I’m contemplating getting rid of all my Black series figures with the exception of the clones, OT, and Mandalorians. I’m digging all the 3.75 vehicles esp. clone wars stuff.
I think I got most of these figures from Five Below. Like you guys, I no longer own them. I've tried to like the Sequel Trilogy, I really have. All I can come away with is small aspects that I like. The First Order troopers is one.
As a late collector i'm astonished the Archive line isn't a monthly thing. I love repacks, they let me get old figures for a reasonable price. Or at all. As long as they keep pumping out clones, that is. New clones are more important.
Remember Rey stuff was really moving in 2015, so it made sense to repack her a few times. The other ones not so much. But I believe Hasbro was operating on the strategy they used during the prequels, when toys generally moved pretty easily. Hasbro didn’t seem to yet realize that kids had moved on to electronics generally, and that trend has continued to this day.
Really glad this video was made. It highlights how mad/entitled some of the criticisms the line gets nowadays because people got 1 repack/repaint per wave etc. Keep it up guys!
I agree that the first order trooper designs were actually cool. Figures sucked (posseability, loose joints, paint, loose accessories). I'm 50 now. Me and my childhood friend saw the prequels together. Left Force Awakens and were super hyped. Last Jedi we kept looking at each other and were like WTF is going on (didn't even leave our seats after the credits because we were so disturbed. Rise of Skywalker, saw it once and couldn't care if it disappeared from existence. I guess the Black series was a mirror of the prequel movies... actually they're worse😂
Had the exact same experience as you. Loved The Force Awakens! I knew I was in trouble with The Last Jedi in the first five minutes. Rise of Skywalker is just an incoherent mess. The figures of the Black Series sucked at the time. Truly a dark age! -Justin
Poe dameron wave 1 looks like a depressed hidden lover of Gustavo fring from better call Saul or bb, a damaged heart always being woohd by Gus while Gus leaves him blue balled everywhere he meets him, he looks like a Geraldo
The Battlefront game had me want more of these troopers even the bland resistance troopers. I needed Battlefield representation. These are pretty awful in general. I still display the Sith trooper with Cardinal and red jet trooper. The rest are binned. Maybe one day they’ll make an animated show in this time period like Clone Wars and we’ll see the sequels differently.
I'm very happy that i finally got my Darth Vader 40TH Anniversary ROTJ 6inch figure despite of having certain helmet accessory issues, but im satisfied ro complete my main OT ROTJ series. So might retire collecting SW figure or not, since figures are getting a bit cheap looking, repetitive and more expensive for a chunk of plastic. So we'll see. 🤔
I finally broke down and bought a Finn figure at Walgreens in 2021. 😂. I just kept holding out for a better looking figure for that guy. Especially after how cool he looks in TROS.
Eurgh. So many of these figures were truly awful. I've since purged most of my sequel trilogy stuff aside from some troopers and a few key characters. I actually bought the archive Force Awakens Han Solo recently. The updated head is superb. I also swapped out his weird left grippy hand for a more neutral left hand from the original Ep IV Han (I have the gloved hands on that figure). Those two changes make for a really great Old Man Han on my shelf.
It is definitely interesting seeing where this line started. For me though I didn't know of its existence until I think approximately when the 501st trooper was put in the archive wave. Don't quote me on it though haha and from then on i got progressively upset with hasbro and the line i even stopped collecting at one point but they did turn it around just very very recently. And I think as long as the consistency stays so will I.
@OutOfTheBasement Im glad that its better recently. Might be what saves hasbro. They're close to going into liquidation by the end of this year. I don't personally think they will although people smarter than me do so we'll see. The new CEO seems to be doing good. Although others disagree, so far all I've seen from him is good decisions 😁.
Hasbro as a whole is performing terribly. However that really doesn't have to do with niche collectible lines like Black Series. This is the company that makes a bulk of their revenue with things like Peppa Pig, Play-Doh, Monopoly, etc. Overall as a company, they are tanking hard. -Justin
@OutOfTheBasement i know that at a time black series was losing them money, to my knowledge its not now. But with the investments they're putting into black series I'd wager that its looking to be something far less niche in the future for them. The other IP's have been doing poorly with no change in sight, talking extremes here but they may cut the other stuff or sell it off and keep the profitable stuff such as black series. I think its one of those every little bit helps kinda situations. To be fair though other toy manufacturers are in similar positions.
Black Series is not one of their heavy-hitting lines. You can actually prove this by looking at their 2023 financial report. The document is like hundreds of pages long but you can see what their true money-makers are. Their 6" collectible lines barely make a footnote. Their "key brands" are things like Peppa Pig, Monopoly, Play-Doh, NERF, My Little Pony, Baby Alive, etc. -Justin
I'm gonna say no to Titanium, Force FX sabers, and helmets. However we are totally going to cover things like the Centerpieces, since those are actually "Black Series" in the 1/12th sense. -Justin
For all of the good they’ve been doing the last few years why r they being so stupid like they’ll pegwarm so hard like how have they not figured that out by now

Still remember getting TFA First Order Trooper on the secondary market from SDCC before any other figure came out for $130AU..that figure still sells for the same price or lower...plus back in the day you had Rey and BB-8 in one box?..reckon you could get a Mandalorian and a Grogu in a box these days?..cheers fellas🍺🍺🍻
Thanks for checking out the episode! -Justin
Haha those were crazy times for the Black Series! I found a lot of the blue line figures at Walgreens as well. -Justin
Definitely the dark times! Thanks for checking out the episode. -Justin
I think I got most of these figures from Five Below. Like you guys, I no longer own them. I've tried to like the Sequel Trilogy, I really have. All I can come away with is small aspects that I like. The First Order troopers is one.
Yep I sold off a bunch of my ST stuff! I've almost made the push to get rid of 100% of them but I'm not there yet. Thanks for watching, Tom! -Justin
As a late collector i'm astonished the Archive line isn't a monthly thing. I love repacks, they let me get old figures for a reasonable price. Or at all.
As long as they keep pumping out clones, that is. New clones are more important.
I think monthly would be overkill for sure, but I generally agree. I have no issue with repacks when they make sense. -Justin
I think they were all overproduced as well. -Justin
Really glad this video was made. It highlights how mad/entitled some of the criticisms the line gets nowadays because people got 1 repack/repaint per wave etc. Keep it up guys!
100% that is what we're going for with this series. Thanks for checking it out! -Justin
What about the updated material print variant on kylo ren's scarf? Remember that?
Yep, we talk about it in the last retrospective episode! Thanks for watching. -Nate
I need to go check that Walgreens to see if those figures are still there.
I can almost guarantee there will be a red/black box figure of some kind! -Justin
🤣 was not expecting the pitch of the "more!"
😂😂😂
I’ve never seen the Poe Dameron fig until now 😂😂😂
Lol! -Justin
-Justin
Was not expecting a pitched kylo Ren at the beginning lmao 💀
😂
Poe dameron wave 1 looks like a depressed hidden lover of Gustavo fring from better call Saul or bb, a damaged heart always being woohd by Gus while Gus leaves him blue balled everywhere he meets him, he looks like a Geraldo
LMAOOOO that is crazy! -Justin
They did make Star Wars Resistance but I never watched it. -Justin
Thanks for checking out the new episode! -Justin
When y’all said po dameron’s figure was bad, I thought, “couldn’t be that bad”. I was wrong.
Hahaha! -Justin
Hey Hasbro, can you make a 212th Airbourne Trooper already?
DID YOU SAY REPACKED FORCE AWAKENS PEG WARMERS????
Surprised we haven’t gotten that one yet. -Justin
Good lord anyone that complains about the state of the line now just needs to be sent this video. The black series dark ages 💀
They're entitled to their opinions of course. But the people who think the line was better off in these days?!?!? Sheesh. -Justin
I finally broke down and bought a Finn figure at Walgreens in 2021. 😂. I just kept holding out for a better looking figure for that guy. Especially after how cool he looks in TROS.
Hahaha you did your part clearing out that shelf space, lol! -Justin
Truly the Dark Times.... I had no interest in Black Series nor the movies they were from.
The Mandalorian brought me back to both
Nice! A lot of others are in that boat as well. -Justin
Constable Zuvio is the greatest character in the line.
Truely the _____ character of all time! -Justin
Constio I think is still at my Walgreens
Wouldn't be surprised! -Justin
That updated head on Han is awesome! Thanks for watching, Banzai BoB! -Justin
Thanks for sharing, Marsmellow! As a person who's been collecting the line since 2015...the line has never been better these past few years. -Justin
-Justin
Its been a while since the last retrospective, are yall gonna be covering the bs sublines like the titanium helmets or lightsabers
I'm gonna say no to Titanium, Force FX sabers, and helmets. However we are totally going to cover things like the Centerpieces, since those are actually "Black Series" in the 1/12th sense. -Justin
Another awesome video on the black series star wars figures keep collecting out of the basement
Thanks dude! -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement your welcome 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
For all of the good they’ve been doing the last few years why r they being so stupid like they’ll pegwarm so hard like how have they not figured that out by now
Well this is a look back at 2015. None of this is modern or happening right now, unless I'm misunderstanding your comment. -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement I know I’m just talking in general like they’ll repack or-overstock figs that won’t sell like Luke w/grogu, black krrsantan, all of these leia and lando figs that don’t seem to move off the pegs
Guavian Thumb trooper....
From Spy Kids!
Detective Columbo Dameron
What?
@@OutOfTheBasement Pilot Poe looks like Detective Columbo. 😂 Old TV show.
@@OutOfTheBasement My bad, Ancient reference with zero context..
Ooooooh lol!
Commenting for that sweet, sweet algo.

Hey at least none of these came in one of those Hasbro crap plastic free blind boxes .. FU HASBRO !!! MOC FOREVER !!!
I can't believe you've turned things around and now you're a fan of PFP!
That Poe face …Yikes
Strong contender for worst face in the entire line. Poor Oscar lol
Tied with orange/blue line Obi-Wan Kenobi for sure! Oscar deserves better. -Justin
Wave 2? Wtf? 😢
Waves 2, 3, and 4 are covered here! -Justin
Just wait but it at Ross it so cheap
Did you watch the video? -Justin
I just want clone troopers
That’s Gen Z for ya 😂
@@OutOfTheBasement guilty as charged
Bro what... Halo brain rot?

Hey James! Thanks for watching. -Justin
Oof. Glad I wasn't around back then. Also glad to be a part of the elite basement battalion so I got to see this early!!
Appreciate you, Kaleb! -Justin
