Thomas, my favorite image was the one with the cow. It not only captured the beauty of the cold winter snow, but it captured some of the misery that can go with it. Winter scenes are beautiful to look at but they are not that easy to photograph... as you well know. I've been out in some places where there was so much snow that there wasn't anything to photograph. It turned out to be a photographic bust but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. Unfortunately, all the roads were closed and I couldn't get back home. I missed a day of work.🤪

Haha, I used to love missing work because of snow days. Only happened once or twice, but they were the best days.

Bole Hill is my favourite location. Alas, a working day that day so could not enjoy those conditions just 5 miles up the road. It's a woodland composition cornucopia. The wife was one stuck that afternoon, just up there from Hunters Bar, abandoning the car and walking home. Sheffield has its 7 hills, so traffic always clogs up quickly; you got lucky to get to the Peaks via that road!

I find the first shots very painterly, I don't know whether it's the contrasts of trees trunks (or cow) against the smoothness of the snow, but I like them a lot! Snow does magnify everything, you were lucky to enjoy at least a bit of it, no regrets!

Part of the photography story a channel like this should convey is that not every time you go out you will come back with a portfolio shot. The adventure is just as important.

I find it amusing that on your B&W 1:1 squares that you are using ISO 320. That was the ISO of TRI-X professional 120 film. So, its use in your square shots seems so appropriate and nostalgic! Loved the shots!

The problem with UK traffic in snow isn't so much the tyres it's the drivers. They just don't know how to drive in the stuff. Too low a gear, too high revs, braking far too late etc etc. And of course, the panic which sets in, resulting in not going faster than 20mph whenever the white stuff appears! Winter tyres don't help any of that! But I loved the shot of the cow and the trio of birch trunks.

As in, do you change the aspect ratio on your camera or do you just look at it and basically say "Yeah, I am gonna make that a square in Lightroom later"?
