I built something a LOT more simple last year, but it was my first time ever building a headboard, let alone anything, but I also had this idea with a LED strip that lit up the wall behind the bed instead of having to go blind at night if you had to go use the bathroom! I am moving back to my own place now in two weeks, and I have so many ideas for small "simple" woodworking projects I want to do, I just dont have a shop to work in anymore. So I'll have to see about what I can do! Love the video and thanks for the inspiration with the lights!

When i drill my holes smaller than necessary i just use a scrap board, drill my hole with the correct diameter and place it over my smaller hole with some clamps or double sided tape.. This ensures guidance as well. No need for some matching dowel 😜 But still a good tip. Greetings from germany. Love your stuff

Also the heartrate watches are good at measuring quality in my experience, e.g. deep sleep. A restful night can take 1-2 days to have impact and the watch / app confirms if you had a good one. Also super happy to see you got a/c !! I remember during the crazy heat waves last year you said it was just gatorade and sweat !
You asked about that moment when I switch from interested to intrigued? Bowling Alley Wax. I swear I could hear the squeak as the hamster fell off the wheel in my head. While not a sheen I'd go to on a personal project, it's really cool to know that it exists, and to see how it looks! For lack of a better word, it looks like a "natural" high gloss finish. It's not uniform like a polished poly or epoxy, yet it's not splotchy like a hastily applied spar (don't ask...). It feels very organic. I've played around with so many obscure finishes over the years--I've even tried sanding and polishing raw wood--and you've just given me something new to play with, so thank you! Also, heckin' subscribed. Killer work!

Yea, I've struggled with beds that can handle vigorous dovetailing in the past. I finally found a solid walnut bed frame with 2x8 rails with 4x4 posts, and 2" tenons that finally fixed the problem. That thing doesn't creak or shift no matter how many pins or tails I cut.
Yeah that’s a hard join! I probably would have put more attention there if this was load bearing at all. As is, this is basically a vanity shell. Beef is definitely how it should be handled.

Interest to intrigue generally happens when I think "How can this impact my life and would it be for the better?" This normally leads me down a path of wondering also what can I take from what I'm not intrigued by... I'm now starting to realize how easily influenced I am by the mundane. Btw, that was an amazing intro! I always enjoy your videos and your sense of humor, keep it up!
In my field, interest turns to intrigue whenever I see some line of seemingly random code generate an outcome that I desire, which I can now build a proof of concept on.
Beautiful work and just a fantastic walkthrough! I learned a ton and really appreciate walkthroughs like this. Minor, very conditional warning. It looked that you may have used the cutoff wheel on the angle grinder to de-burr (sand) the outside of the metal pipes. Ifffffffff this was the case, be very, very careful. While very easy, the side stress on an extremely fast turning blade that is not designed for it is one of the big reasons these blades shatter…. This can be, shall we say very very not pretty and has caused a lot a major injuries.

For me the shift between interest and intrigue is always arbitrary, except when it isn't. I sometimes spend an hour or 2 with chisels, planes and a hand saw making small wall mounts for random tools. The only certainty for me is that building the same thing twice is anathema.
I loved your comment. Mainly because I’m so different. I’ve been woodworking for over 45 years now and my atttiude to tool storage etc is that it must be functional and hardwearing but not necessarily built for looks. I know some shops where all the storage is made of fine hard wood and each drawer has foam cutouts for each tool. Again, I’m halfway towards that. I don’t make my storage items out of anything in particular - almost inevitably out of scrap and so, each piece may be a mosaic (mess?) of different Timbers. I do use magnets to keep stuff in place but I guess I’m too old now to think of foam cutouts. My list of pieces to build is very long. Way too long for me to achieve before I die. And that list only gets longer as I think of something or get inspiration for something. So, I’m so busy making pieces that I don’t want to spend time making my shop look pretty. All of this is no criticism at all - it’s rather a celebration of how different people approach the same hobby/work from such different perspectives. Long may that continue.
Both comments here got a like from me. Just wanted to add here that I often do the same - turning shop stuff into a time suck - but my philosophy is that it is good practice for "really nice" stuff. On the other hand, like @theofarmmanager267, I also have an equal amount of plywood and 2x4 shop stuff because sometimes it just needs done, and I'm fresh out of f***s to give.
@@mattelias721 I just wish I had the kind of personality that allowed me to do a fun project (such as ultra smart tool holders) when my brain tells me that I’ve got “real” stuff to do. That stuff to do maybe in the workshop but it could be housework, cleaning the car, caring for the fruit and vegetables. I was MD of a large company for many years and I “learnt” about prioritisation and, perhaps, that’s got so ingrained in me now that I can’t do “fun stuff” if I know there is “serious stuff” to do. If you can, then you are better balanced than me!

I do this to the point where I rely mainly on our HOA to coerce me into doing 'important' stuff. Then I do what's necessary with the attitude of a petulant child. After being an Army officer for almost 24 years, you'd also think I can apply self-discipline... hm. I am a total piece of work.

alternatively, drill a hole through a scrap bit of plywood and doublestick tape it down to drill the larger hole on a smaller one. Alternatively alternatively, use the Shaper origin and Plate to make a larger hole exactly the size you want regardless. 😃
Also a big fan of the milling process, especially with figured wood. Question: i have a similar jointer/planer combo and I’m having a hard time with edge jointing, any tips?
The feed tables have helped the short bed problem with a little modification. Kind of the trade off with such a compact form is that it’s not great for long stuff. I usually straight line rip with a tracksaw first
I personally and professionally would question the placement of the large mortise on the frame. Then you addressed it. Do you have over spray issues with your hvlp.

I don’t make my storage items out of anything in particular - almost inevitably out of scrap and so, each piece may be a mosaic (mess?) of different Timbers. I do use magnets to keep stuff in place but I guess I’m too old now to think of foam cutouts.
My list of pieces to build is very long. Way too long for me to achieve before I die. And that list only gets longer as I think of something or get inspiration for something. So, I’m so busy making pieces that I don’t want to spend time making my shop look pretty. All of this is no criticism at all - it’s rather a celebration of how different people approach the same hobby/work from such different perspectives. Long may that continue.
Both comments here got a like from me. Just wanted to add here that I often do the same - turning shop stuff into a time suck - but my philosophy is that it is good practice for "really nice" stuff. On the other hand, like @theofarmmanager267, I also have an equal amount of plywood and 2x4 shop stuff because sometimes it just needs done, and I'm fresh out of f***s to give.
@@mattelias721 I just wish I had the kind of personality that allowed me to do a fun project (such as ultra smart tool holders) when my brain tells me that I’ve got “real” stuff to do. That stuff to do maybe in the workshop but it could be housework, cleaning the car, caring for the fruit and vegetables. I was MD of a large company for many years and I “learnt” about prioritisation and, perhaps, that’s got so ingrained in me now that I can’t do “fun stuff” if I know there is “serious stuff” to do. If you can, then you are better balanced than me!
@@theofarmmanager267 I am laughing here, dude. Fun fact about me: I will consciously ignore stuff like property upkeep, lawn care, tree trimming, etc., in favor of my shop projects. I do this to the point where I rely mainly on our HOA to coerce me into doing 'important' stuff. Then I do what's necessary with the attitude of a petulant child. After being an Army officer for almost 24 years, you'd also think I can apply self-discipline... hm.
I am a total piece of work.

After your years in the military (my family has served in the Royal Marines since 1880; great grandfather, grandfather, father (DDay) and now son (currently corporal in commando), perhaps you have rebelled against doing logical priorities. Good for you. I’ve got a feeling I will die of stress way before you.

alternatively, drill a hole through a scrap bit of plywood and doublestick tape it down to drill the larger hole on a smaller one. Alternatively alternatively, use the Shaper origin and Plate to make a larger hole exactly the size you want regardless. 😃

The feed tables have helped the short bed problem with a little modification. Kind of the trade off with such a compact form is that it’s not great for long stuff. I usually straight line rip with a tracksaw first

I personally and professionally would question the placement of the large mortise on the frame. Then you addressed it. Do you have over spray issues with your hvlp.
Over spray is pretty minimal. I’d love a better setup, but overspray is inevitable until I find a bigger shop.
I can't be the only one that tinks you made a couple cool mini shuffleboard tables.
