Also. I rarely comment on anything. However, I'd very much like to thank you, Matt, Ilya, and Chris for unknowingly mentoring me for the past few years! Specifically, Matt for giving me the confidence to grind freehand! Ilya for the historical information, the confidence to forge more and grind less. Not to mention, in order to be pretentious one must be good. I can't wait to be pretentious! And thanks Chris for your knowledge and examples that brute strength is a valuable commodity.
Ha! I love this comment so much! Thank you! Means a lot when people share this sort of thing.
Well-said. I'm in the same boat.
I want that blade. I’m brand new into blacksmithing and knife making…still building up or making my tools for the craft. At 71, I wish I’d started this a long time ago!😁
I'm a big fan of the waterfall platen.
Yay, Your Edge is back!!!
Man, first time I've watched one of your videos. REALLY enjoyed it and appreciate the teaching process you use! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this video man! I recently got the waterfall attachment for my Brodbeck and I've been curious exactly how to use it to the best effect!
Excellent! Let me know how it goes!
Great video. Thanks for the sound warning. She doesn't know it, but my wife sleeping next to me is grateful.
I would love to know what FPM you run the belt.
hi Matt...im not close to your level by far....;-) but i thank you very much for your video.....your point of view for me is realistic....for me....i love watching what you and Ilia do!!! for a few years now you and Ilia are my inspiration .....Greetings from a german guy living in tuscany. Thank you both very much !!!!
I definitely want that blade!!
Just 1 Month ago, I made my first knife, under guidance though, and I handgrinded everything. And by that I mean ONLY handgrinding. There wasn't even a powertool in the workshop. I so desperatly wished for some kind of machine. It's ridiculous how annoying that was, so you must have the patience of an angel or something, considering the grinds you have shown on this channel.
Honestly, I've spent most of my life on a grinder, so even if I'm doing something for the first time, there is no fear!
I want that blade!
I WANT THAT BLADE this was so educational and I've been wanting to see something more in depth about blade grinding because always love seeing you get passionate about doing it and it makes my day seeing that passion come to the forefront in everything you guys make ❤
Glad I could be of help. I will try to do more. Any ideas on good grinding topics?
@@ThatWorks at this moment none that I can think of but if I develop any questions or ideas you didn't cover in this one I'll send them your way buddy
@@hellywacki5529 please do!

Great work dude 👍👍
I love the videos on this channel the most out of all the blacksmith/knife making channels that are out there. You guys are awesome at your craft, knowledgeable, and overall just seem like good people
You are too kind! I would only do educational videos if it was up to me.
Awesome video! Thanks so much! Super helpful!

Great video Matt. I guess I need more attachments for my grinder now. If I want that blade, I can save you some postage....
haha! yea man! At least it's a cheap attachment! good luck!
I want that blade! Thank you! That was very helpful
Awesome video man. Thanks for show casing these new attachments
Any chance you all might put out another platen that has a smaller radius? I think it would be a good idea.
@ThatWorks I don't see why not. I will see if we can make that happen.
Awsome viedeo, love your edge. Always so much you can learn from you guys. I want that blade.
thank you! I also enjoy them, but they def dont "pay the bills" unfortunately. good luck!
THANK YOU
I WANT THAT BLADE! It will be my best friend Christmas present. Thanks for the grinding video. I have a basic 2 x 72 grinder. I would like to get more for it, but don’t know what the other attachments do.
Jason! I have selected you to win this blade! Please dm me on Instagram @mattstagmer or email me through the website ThatWorks.shop to talk more!
I wil consider the whaterfall platen quickly after buying my beltgrinder
Yes, absolutely work. Great I have as well. The only thing it’s a little too high for you and you really have to lower it for more controlling.
Seems like I had plenty of control
That’s it it’s that easy! I want that blade. Great video.
It really is!
Really good work 👍🏻 and I'm sure it will help people out in the future with their projects
Thank you! I hope you are right!
@@ThatWorks I'm sure it will & keep up the great work
Thnx so much for the video , for the non black smith as myself i like trying to learn as much as i can . i spent a lifetime behind a jewelers bench but never got into black smithing .. thnx again Matt

I WANT THAT BLADE!!! great video Matt i bought a waterfall platen after watching this for my OBM grinder works well eventually im gonna get a brodbeck grinder thanks for sharing your style of grinding ., may i ask where do you get the thin grinding wheels you use in other videos? cant find them anywhere appreciate it Mark CRAP i forgot to use promo code would have saved like $50😡😡🤬🤬🤬
I want that blade.
Interesting. I definitely had your initial reaction to them but maybe it's worth looking at one
Yea! They arent for everyone, but it's going to be the new norm in a couple of years anyway.
@@ThatWorks Yeah. As someone who does this as a hobby/art practice I'm glad i don't have to keep up with all of it
My plunges are.... mediocre. So, glad you did this video. ☺️
it will up your game right away! I promise!
I was literally looking for a waterfall platen today and trying to see if this one will work on my black fox 1 2x72
I want that blade! haha
I want that blade!!! 🗡
at first i didnt know what you were talking about till you showed it on the knife
Yea, they arent common yet. I bet in a about 5 years it will become standard.
I wan't that blade. Looks pretty awesome so far.
I want that blade 😄
i want that blade!
I want that blade 😎
good luck!
It's interesting how many different types of wheels and platerns you need, you would really need to run a production line where you would be saving time changing wheels etc in the the process 😉
Having multiple grinders is def a plus!
I want that blade!
... not gonna get it, but I want it 😅
You have as good of a chance as anyone. I will do the old fashioned names in what drawing in one week!
Are the platen plunges made in carbide or traditional steel? I have seen some attachments made out of carbide and I can already tell from small experience that it was a mistake to not purchase that upgrade. My platens and guards already have wear lines in them from work.
Hi Matt. I also wor with a waterfall platen. But I have a problem. My waterfall platen gets extremely hot in a short time. Is that the case with you too?
Matt, would a waterfall platen also help to keep the line between the bevel and the flat top area straight? That's an area I still struggle with. I'm wondering if being able to grind the whole length of the blade at once would help make that straighter/cleaner, in addition to the plunge benefits.
Yes I certainly can be used that way.
I want that blade 😉
is it compatible with a slanting plunge line?
perhaps an explanation of what a platen is next time? i started to understand by context, but at the beginning of the video i was quite lost.
Sorry. Yea this is a 102 style video. Perhaps I should have started with 101
I want that blade please!
Please forge Dyrnwyn from the Disney version of The Black Cauldron and make it out of damascus steel and make the scabbard and The Black Cauldron itself to go with it.
I want that blade
I want that blade..!
@@ThatworksTwo I don't have a forge so this would be the perfect opportunity for me to practice building a handle and finishing the blade. Also it would be an honour to own something that both you and Ilya have laid hands on.
@@ThatworksTwo :) Fingers crossed
I think a big key for safety is to deliberately come onto the platen with the tip slightly up and then drop it to the belt once the plunge is on the waterfall. If you lose focus and accidentally come in even slightly tip down, you could get a knife to the chest. At least it would be the handle… I say this because I’m 100% sure I’d make that mistake at some point (ok I see you covered it at the end)
I mean yea, but also using a warn 400g ive never even been able to get the point to catch and toss the blade. Im sure if I stabbed it, it would. Id be nervous with some cheap sanding belts with overlapping joints too. I should have mentioned that.
I use the platen with grinder running in reverse so the blade is pulled away from me. It just seems to work better for me
👍👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍
Are you and the Slavic smith not working together anymore?
WHy do you ask that?
I want that blade! Please.
good luck!
I'd like that blade!! It would be an honor to have one of y'all's knives! I wish I could afford to buy one 😕
“I want that blade” |--•
one big secret that they don't want you to know is to always wear eye protection
You should always protect your eyes and your lungs
I mean...I did for most of it. Had to give the people something to complain about!
I hate it when a belt blows apart on a vertical platten. Scares the sheit off it’s me. I’d really hate to know what would happen if be blew apart on the waterfall platten. I really hope nobody gets hurt if the tip of the knife come back to n ya. Be safe. Great info on this WF platten.
@timjohle8876 Matt did not discuss tensioning the belt in video. But it should only have a light tensioning and light pressure used on a slow setting. You should have both hands on the knife at all times as well. Should a belt split, in theory you should be able to pull the knife away from the machine. But indeed it is important to be as safe as possible when using a belt grinder in general.
Sword of Aeons: Fable the Lost Chapters
Still looks dangerous. I guess in time I’d get used to it
😊
:D
