I think hornbys version is very good!! do agree rails of Sheffield has a little more detail but for me it comes down to Price!!locos are getting ridiculous Price wise at the moment!!!so for me the market belongs to hornby who are trying there best to be where they should be and yes I did watch james May excellent program!!!!
£110 is very respectable. Its two hours of a car mechanic's time. There's a lot of manual labour involved. I'm impressed by both. The Hornby one is a little more railroady but cheaper. You pays your money and makes your choice.
Thanks for the review. I have three Hornby Terriers & all have problems with the wipers. After a couple of hours of running the wipers are pushed back from the wheel & need to be bent back to make contact. I don't know if the wipers are too thin or the wrong material, but either way, it's a lot of maintenance & I'm seriously thinking of putting them in the showcase & running the superceded models on the layout.
I noticed the Rails version has a much richer and clearer paint/print finish on it and being able to see the motion and oiling points on the conrods do make it look good. I guess it all comes down to the persons budget and I do wonder if it will be worth waiting a while to see if prices drop due to lack of demand for either of the models.
I think there is a market for both. The Rails version is more detailed, but not everyone will be able to afford the pricier Rails version. I will be buying the Hornby version. I may also buy the Rails version, but because of the price and amount of detail I will be handling it with a lot more care than the Hornby one.
Yellow interior? It gives a new meaning to pristine. Surely the inside of the cab is not going to look like that at all. I could understand if they used a "dirtier" colour. A Yellow Cab floor. That would certainly get painted dirty black/grey regardless of whether the rest was left pristine.
I think I will be getting Hornby one because the rails motor on terriers might be bit dodgy. As well the text on Hornby terrier it is right I believe but that’s just me
Hi - Thank you for the review and I agree that the ROS model seems to be more detailed. It was a shame the ROS one didn't have a motor so you could compare how they run . I will be going for the Hornby model as I am looking to start a new layout and having no stock to start with the difference in price means be able to buy some wagons or coaches. I hope that the new manufacturers such as ROS & Hattons will take the oppotunity to bring out models that Hornby , Bachmann dont to give more choice in the ready to run market.
Rails have nailed it well. Hope they don't forget to add on the brake hoses on the front & rear of the loco. Where as the Hornby's brake rod looks gruby, plasticky (hence fragile) apart from the overall details. Worth the price difference.
I think that you must be right. The models are at different price points, of course, and the Hornby model is not at all bad, but the Rails model does seem to be noticeably finer.
Seems to be a big panic from Rails trying to push thier terrier out there to all the train nuts. At least we did not have 30+ minutes talking about the box. both have thier plusses and Minuses. I'd Plum for a sound ready one TBH and Hornby dont currently off that so only one option but I will wait till I hear this babies 1st. That Glazing, 10 minutes with a Blade and file and you'll have the hornby one sorted.
I don't think people realise the previous Hornby terrier was a Dapol designed model which ended up in the Hornby range after they purchased the moulds from Dapol in the 1990s. Also Dapol have produced the terrier in O gauge and N gauge for years so it's no wonder its a better model.
Thanks for the review jenny, hopefully there is a market for both manufacturers models in the end you get what you pay for, Rails of Sheffield would have invested a lot of money on their version I'm sure. By the same token Hornby's revamped version may help with their financial problems by getting them to market ahead of Rails version. all the best Stewart
You cant claim a particular class if loco as your own. Its just that its a well known hornby model. Originally dapols model anyway. Rails commissioned it because they felt it was time for am upgrade and as dapol had all the research etc from the o gauge model it was a no-brainer
do you need all this cab detail, it only puts the price up.we didn't have it on our Triang locos but we still loved them, the cab detail on my jinty is the x04 magnet
These are outwith my era and normal interest area, but whilst I think the Hornby model is OK in isolation, the Rails/Dapol one is just another level. The Hornby one still has the feel of an older model, lacking the refinement of the other and just looks a wee bit too toyish for me. If I were to buy one, it'd be the Rails one for sure. It's the super detail scale loco, not a toy.
Hornbys one is actually better, the price is inexpensive whilst rail's charge an overly pricey amount of money just for the sound version, 239 could get you a Hornby Hush Hush and a Centenary Smokey Joe (If you squeeze in that one pound.)
Thanks for the review and comparison. Might need to make room for one of the Rails/Dapol terriers. Certainly looks like it will be worth the extra money.
lets see how the motor runs on the rails one. I know hattons had running problems with there p class on the first few batches . I noticed that these newer model producers like ,djmodels etc are using coreless motors and these have had there issues. and last but not least were all getting a bit older and can our eyes really tell at normal running distances weather the windows are properly detailed . each to there own . I think I would go for Hornby .
Not had an issue with my p classes personally. Its a dapol produced model for rails and their motors are very good. Look at one of their 00 B4's running to see what I mean.
I know what you mean ,but I have heard and seen p class and the dj models 14xx with issues not all but some . I know dj models have put a lot of detail in there running guide for the locos re the coreless motors. I have the 14xx , it didn't run too great from the box but then it had probably been in hattons stock room for a couple of years so I contacted dj models .he confirmed this and after an hours running in and lube job and lots of layout running it now works fine . I suppose its down to cot as well . I noticed some folk are mentioning the cost of mode; railways and for those on a buget I suppose the Hornby terrier fares better . I still run an old dapol lol I have heavily weathered .looks great and runs a treat . I model many scales and eras and style and tend to run dc on my main layout so its no issue .great hobby at any rate .cheers for the comment .
I am afraid the Rails one looks better. No disrespect to Hornby as I wish to carry on in their ventures, as James showed in his excellent series. Let's hope they move back to Margate.
They have already that was a small bit ago, May was even at the ceremony in the x-factory now loco storage facility which currently houses Bittern + 2 tender for example.
I'm unlikely to buy either but I would like to mention that it seems to me that the manufacturers and to some extent the retailers are making more and more use of RUclipsrs to promote their products. This is distinct from the reviews of items actually purchased by a specific RUclipsr. I can only hope that this trend doesn't influence a review.
I never understand why manufacturers seem to bring the same models to market at the same time. in this case Dapol wins so suspect this will kill most of the Hornby market potential.
Hi Jennifer it's nice to see you get the recognition you deserve along with the big RUclipsrs in this hobby I personally are staying with the Hornby one as much as it's missing a few bits it's cheaper and dapol have issues with their stock in the past Keep safe arp
Everyone to their own opinion but I found the review had a certain amount of bias in favour of the Rails model. Reviewer appeared to be looking for faults in the Hornby model while apparently had no critically negative analysis of the Rails model. So we can take it that the Rails model is faultless and it's back to the drawing board for Hornby!
D A Baines there is room in the market for both. The Rails model feels like a greater attention to detail has occurred but you pay extra for that. Not unlike Bachmann Vs Hornby 08s.
I admit to thinking it would be biased at first as it was Rails who provided the models for review. However, it is apparent from the video the Rails version is a finer model. Having said that I would go for Hornby due to price . As has been said, there is a market for both each with there own merits.
I hope these two great companies don’t produce the same loco again as they will both risk reducing their own profits, with market saturation of the same loco. I know it’s been done before with the the B1 H+B also the standard 4. Of all the pre-grouping locos they could have chosen they go for one that’s been done before (I know this is a completely new tooling for both this time) show some imagination like when Bachman did the C class nobody saw that coming, and I doubt there will be a duplication. Please produce some coaching stock like the birdcages pre group modellers are crying out for rolling stock.
Rails, don't deserve the praise, the saltiness they are showing on their own website, means that regardless of detail, or running quality, they've lost a potential customer just because of that, because frankly, i don't want to support the BS about the ROS ones being "pedigree" because they are salty about hornby getting there first, i'd be the same if hornby did it, i just don't feel right backing someone who thinks something was done out of spite, its just not on
flyingtardis It’s a cheeky punchline , it made me giggle if anything. I think Hornby’s more in the wrong by viciously announcing there’s and getting it to market to over throw Dapols Terrier. There’ve done similar in the past. Either way both our opinions aren’t that valid because it’s a competitive market in a competitive business.
