I'm going to Japan in late March, I was nervous already due to my height and that I stutter when I speak my broken japanese- But I have a slight phobia of being stared at, now that I know they will stare for sure-- aaaah lol I'm even more nervous.
The staring generally isn't that noticeable, don't worry! And for the most part if you do notice, it's not malicious at all! When I noticed staring I would look back and smile and would generally get a smile back and a hello.
The first lady was probably stared at because her top was inappropriate and showed too much of her chest. I’m really covered in tattoos and don’t noticed being stared at that much. People will look at you but give them a smile and a quick nod and they’ll smile and look away. They are very polite and shy people.
I got stared at a little bit and I was able to ignore it without being too bothered...I have social anxiety so that's really something! xD. One time two high school girls came up to me after the usual session of staring because they really liked my coat so I think for the most part, people stare because they are interested in knowing more about you. I had a reverse culture shock when i came back from japan when I rode a regular train to chicago to meet up with my friends. The train I was on felt so huge! I was used to a one level train which was clean and quiet, but the trains here are two stories and also SO LOUD. There was teenagers yelling so loud I could hear them through my headphones. I know the US is known for being loud, but only when you live in a quiet country for a bit do you actually understand haha (Also, just wanted to clarify for any non us/chicago residents that the trains within chicago are single level ((Still not very clean though)) and the trains that are outside of the city which sometimes take you in are the double decker ones)
The “tiny little cars”, vans, trucks, etc are kei vehicles. They’re a class subject to lower taxes in Japan due to their smaller size and smaller engines. Kei trucks are fairly common grey imports here in America. If you put a speed limiter on them, you don’t even have to wait until they’re 25 years old like most grey imports. Ranchers, hunters, and off-road enthusiasts have found them to be a cheaper (and in many ways, better) alternative to side-by-sides (like the Yamaha Rhino and Polaris Ranger), and many universities, hospitals, and airports use them instead of golf carts as light utility vehicles. Where I live, southern Arizona, they’ve become the perfect machine for tackling the dunes. They’re light like VW-based buggies, but have optional four-wheel-drive like bigger trucks. Suzuki Samurais (which are also technically kei vehicles) are also popular for the same reason.
