@@surak1841 Oh, well if you're talking in the longer term, I'm sure those who feel the risks outweigh the positives and have the means to move elsewhere have already done so. It's like asking why people still live on flood planes.
Iceland should have a Plan B by creating a second International airport away from the Volcano. This International airport being so close to the Volcano might have big problems. It’s never too late to start building a second airport.

That won't work just cooling the outside. Too much area and too much heat inside with more flowing inside and braking through constantly. A losing battle, you could never win!
I'm very worried to see the flames above the roads. I've heard road pavements often produce fumes that contribute to global warming on a scale that's far more massive than cars. This event looks like it could be speeding up that process a lot.
They need to set up a principal gathering place (or multiple as needed) in each town to shelter everyone in one place. They can just heat one building and the collective body heat from so many people will help. I don’t know what to suggest about the water pipes, everyone is going to have burst pipes. My thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by this natural disaster.
The roads can be cleared using bulldozers after it has hardend. Solidified and fully cooled lava is actually a light and very porous rock that can be used as a filter material.

To avoid further shocks, it's important for all people to know the real reasons for the increase in calamities and that there are ways to solve this problem: *"Global* *Crisis.* *The* *Responsibility"* *Creative* *Society*
Iceland's increased volcanic activity was not a surprise or unusual. Seen in the geological record, there is a pattern of increased and decreased volcanic activity every few hundred years. This increased activity Iceland is experiencing keeps up with that pattern. This is well within the norms, and is not tied to any doomsday prophecy.
Volcanoes are not natural disasters. They are part of natural phenomenon. Disaster is to build infrastructure over a volcano without taking in consideration volcano eruption and having a backup plan.
@@mrexists5400Absolutely. I find it very concerning that people start believing prophecies, because the next stage for some is 'extremist cults' with 'end of the world.' And while I couldn't care less what consenting adults do with their lives, it always distresses me intensely when I see children caught up in these things. To the person who is taking notions from a mere book, please throw it away and listen to science. Icelandic eruptions 'are' commonly cyclical, the one that was said to have erupted 780 years ago has already been proven to erupt on a roughly 800 year cycle. Don't know about any of the other eruptions, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same.
The increase of natural disasters comes from climate change which causes more extreme weather events. Geologic activity (volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis) are not a part of that, though. The rate of those disasters remains the same. It might only be that the amount of people affected by them increases because there are more people today and they often settle closer to geologically active spots.
If only they could use the lava itself to heat water, perhaps using some sort of mobile trucks that hold a heat exchanger over it, connected to flexible hoses to pump it back.

At first I thought it was just amazing to see and thought how lucky the people of Iceland were to be so close and experience things like that. But, now I am scared for the Icelanders. For volcanos that haven't erupted in 6,000 yrs and almost 1,000 yrs this time. It seems like they just break open anywhere. Surprise, lava has come to rip your life apart. Not funny. I really hope that Iceland has many emergency backup plans. When I lived in northeast in America, we had an usual ices storm that cut off all our electricity and without that all of our heat. Good question. From my understanding (and I'm happy to be corrected) it is only the radiative heat that will try to melt the ice and snow at the edge and it is continuously fighting against the freezing cold air sweeping in to replace the hot air rising from the lava flows. As such the radiative heat only has time to melt just the very surface of the ice or snow at the edge of the lava flow and then is instantly frozen again by the icy cold wind rushing in to replace the rising hot air. This is happening constantly so not much happens visibly and appears quite subtle. There is also a bit of flash to steam and sublimation going on too if I'm not mistaken but that can get technical and can always be researched on Wikipedia if you want to look at it in depth. Also note that a lot of the clips are taken from quite a good sized distance, much larger than they appear to the naked eye (unless there is a reference point to gain perspective) so in many cases there is just too much distance to see good detail close up. Hope that helps, and would love to have my understanding updated if it is outdated. Peace!
