    This story gave me chills. This almost happened to my brother. We live in Montana. We always go camping in the bob marshal and hidden lakes. One day camping we are playing tag/hide and seek. My brother was Dennis age, small stature, 7yrs old…my brother was “hiding” for hide and seek. I am the oldest, I was 13 at the time. I kept my eye on him and watched where he went and hide. My mom and aunt were also watching closely. He was only 30-50ft from the campsite where we all were. I was “finding” all the kids, saving him for last since I knew exactly where he was- there’s a song we sing in the family out in the woods to help find each other. One person sings loudly the first part and you answer singing the second part. I was singing this and they were all responding as I was finding them. I went to walk towards my brothers spot. He wasn’t answering the song. I had this overwhelming sense that something was wrong so I just immediately starting sprinting towards his spot he was hiding at. I got there calling his name and he wasn’t there! I immediately screamed for my mom and dad yelling dante was gone and I can’t find him. I’ve never seen my parents run so fast. Everyone immediately started yelling for him. We were searching everywhere. My aunt ran up the road to another camp site asking for them to go call the police. I heard a faint cry and just starting sprinting towards the noise. I found him. Almost a half a mile from the campsite lost and scared and crying hiding under a bush. He was too scared to call out and was shaking and terrified. He wondered too far and got scared that a bear would hear him so he hide and stayed quiet. He only cried out once and thankfully I heard it. It was and still is the scariest day in our entire lives. My brother doenst go camping anymore, but I don’t blame him.

    In June, 1969 I was 16 and working a summer job near Knoxville. My boss knew people planning to search the next morning and asked if I would go with him. My family had camped in the Smokey Mountains and I was familiar with Cades Cove and the area where Martin had vanished. We arrived at the park early the next morning (Sunday). The Knoxville News-Sentinal covered the story that morning which resulted in hundreds of volunteers, far too many to manage. My boss & I were assigned to a team led by a park official and 6-8 of us cut through underbrush, briars and rough terrain until dark. What most people don’t understand is just how thick and impenetrable most of the search area was. A 6 year old boy, developmentally challenged or not could not have done more than walk on a trail or in the open field. There was a rest area with restrooms as I recall and the Martins had stopped there. Dennis & his brother had decided to walk around the small structure, pass one another behind it and appear on the side opposite where they began. The brother (10) emerged but Dennis did not. Within 5 minutes the father & grandfather raised the alert and everyone around the rest area began to call out and search. The father hiked back to alert the park rangers and by sundown there were 25-30 persons searching every possible area where a 6 year old might hide. Again, most ways out were impassable for such a small child. I left the following afternoon (Monday) in total disbelief. For 55 years the Martin case has bothered me because of the implausibility of a six year old with only a five minute head start completely disappearing. Tracking dogs, Green Berets, FBI, hundreds of men on foot covering 25 square miles and not even the slightest trace? The whispers by the end of the first week focused on the father & grandfather. Police in Knoxville later were reported to have had the Martin’s back yard searched and dug up. (No trace) To me it was cruel. A family colluding to harm their six year old son? No. I don’t accept it.
    The most likely answer is that he was taken. But if the search began as quickly as is believed, it’s not credible that someone reached his car carrying a silent child. The only thing that makes sense is a longer delay to begin the search, allowing a culprit to put distance between himself & the family. Frankly, none of the theories is convincing. (The father told searchers that Dennis “might not answer” if his name was called out. We assumed there were issues with the child but at the time no one questioned)

    I wondered off as a kid because I was mad about something stupid when we were all camping near the beach. I ended up getting lost along a trail and a group of teen boys found me. I was probably 6/7 at the time and they stayed with me until we found the search and rescue party that was looking for me. If it weren’t for them I don’t know if I would have found my way back.

      @dhikragubran 2 года назад +2

      I don’t believe it tbh, because if it was actually 10-15 minutes that would’ve changed everything and he would’ve had more time to get lost meaning he would’ve gone somewhere completely different. Why would they want to risk fucking up the situation and the possible chance of not finding him. There could be a possibility, sure… but I highly doubt it. And a small child when hiding would probably explore and try and find the best place possible to hide so he probably got so lost and tried to find his way back but took a completely different path. Then the theory goes to either him going completely lost or someone that had been watching him jump at the chance to kidnap him. May he rest in peace and May his parents and family get to see him again one day❤️

We obviously didn’t stop and just went to our parents. We were sitting around the fire eating dinner and we heard something off in the bushes. Our dad went to check it out, came back and told us to go to bed so they could go scare of the raccoon.

    I could have very easily gone missing in the woods when I was about 4. We were camping near Strawberry Reservoir when I was about 4. I was going on a nature walk with my dad and grandpa; they were a very short distance ahead talking, and I was behind them and off to the side probably further than I should have been looking at flowers and butterflies. As I was walking, I stepped into a large hole that was concealed by the tall grass; I have no idea how deep it was because I managed to grab onto the lip of the hole, but even with my little arms extended fully, my feet never hit the bottom. There was muddy water up to my waist at the very least, but again, I was holding onto the lip of the hole for dear life and never found out how deep the hole actually was, so it could have been well over my head if I hadn't managed to stop myself from plunging in fully, and I couldn't swim at all at that age. I screamed for help, but it took my dad and grandpa a bit of time to actually find me because of the tall grass. If I hadn't caught myself, I might not have even gotten the chance to scream. I probably would have been dead before they could have found the hole, IF they ever found the hole at all. Honestly, if I hadn't been able to keep screaming to lead them to me, I don't know if they would have found the hole because of how concealed it was. Maybe Dennis wandered off and fell in a hole?

The human remains that were found but went unreported too late make me think they could have been his remains but now they’ll likely never be found. Dennis was a small, young child. His bones and remains would’ve been minuscule compared to an adult human and easily missed. So sad overall. I’m not a parent, but I literally cannot imagine their grief and survivor’s guilt. • @LinaK786
    @LinaK786 3 года назад +30

    I don't believe the timeline of his disappearance. Family members sometimes honestly remember it wrong - "I was just looking at him and then I turned around and he was gone" - when in reality they last seen him 2 hours ago. Sometimes they lie on purpose, because they think they might get in trouble for not looking after the kid properly. I'm afraid the later might be the case here. There seems to be too much emphasis on how close the kids were watched. "They were hiding in the woods, but we were watching them all the time, Dennis hid in a different spot, because his shirt was too bright, etc." The story seems manufactured. And then the search was so massive that it was too late to tell the truth. As to what happened to the boy - apparently there are a lot of disused mine shafts in the area, he could fall down into one or wander into it and get lost. Another theory is that he crawled into some small space to hide from the heavy rain and eventually died there and it's impossible to look into every little cave.
    A year ago a 5-year-old boy disappeared not far from where I live. He went into the woods with his dad and his grandma, they were supposedly watching him and then he vanished. He was found alive, there is a happy ending, but also the truth about his disappearance came out. He got tired of walking through the woods and the adults just told him to go back to the car. Just a mile or two, what could happen, right?

The other Martin who was there was by some accounts not even related to them, at best a distant cousin.

    • @LinaK786
      @LinaK786 3 года назад +10

      @@gaiusleviathan8110 That's what I'm saying. I don't believe that the children were watched that close. They might've noticed that he's missing when the other kids pranked them, but I don't believe that they actually watched the whole process of the prank, him going into a different bush, etc. They probably didn't think that he was never gonna be found, so they told the story in a way to cover the negligence, to not get in trouble when he's found. The kid wandered off a lot earlier. The sequence of events - kids talking about the prank where the adults can hear and watch them; Dennis choosing a different bush, because of his shirt; the abductor sitting right in that bush with chloroform - is just unbelievably coincidental. The kids were so silly that they didn't notice the adults listening, but savvy enough to figure out that the shirt might be seen from the bush.

    Hello, I believe in the man theory, that a mountain man got him and covered his mouth and dragged him away. Of course the government with all the experiments. It’s very sad for the family. It’s not right that they never got closure about their son all these years. Still remains a mystery, hope it get solved someday.

    How am I JUST NOW hearing this story? I live 30 minutes from Cades Cove.
    It's honestly not surprising though, our national park is big and very dense, and there's a definite energy here. People dissappear from the AT all the time in our section.
    Also, I'm obsessed with y'alls podcast, I listen to 2 a day at work. You're so good at what you do, thank you for making such amazing content!

So exited to hear your take on whatever is going on out there. You guys are awesome!

    The feral human thing reminds me of the Wrong Turn horror movies , also The Hills have Eyes. Please do the episode on that! I'd be so interested!
    Where I live is surrounded by tall hills, I can see over to them from my bedroom window. In the late evenings I always see lights up there in the middle of nowhere... always wonder if anyone feral is living in those hills, gives me the creeps to think.

    This is such a sad but interesting story. I would love an episode about feral humans. It would also be great if you could talk about Bryce Laspisa. I know Kendall covered his case a few years ago but he's been missing 8 years as of August 30th. If he's still alive he could be anywhere.

    I live in the Oak Ridge/Knoxville area and have always heard of the wild people that live in the Smokies. Apparently they came from the families that were supposed to be moved out of several areas, such as when they built certain dames or made national parks. Its pretty interesting when you dig into it.
    Edit: American Horror Stories did an episode on this subject.

    I wonder if possibly someone was watching them the entire time. The noises of the children playing could have "potentially" lured the predator to their location. Once their, the person saw the child and began watching him, being the smallest and having the red color shirt on making him stand out even more. Once Dennis went into hiding the person followed and abducted him being that everyone else was distracted.
    I pray 🙏 one day this case will be solved, so heartbreaking, not knowing.💔
