Good moring Karen. I used to paint a bit years ago and just sort of gave up; you know, family , work etc. You're videos have given me the inspiration to start again. I just adored this particular video, incredible work. Thanks for your efforts!!

I am just mesmerized by this style of painting. I have tried a simpler one and just love it. I plan to paint several more. It's a great mix of WC and abstract. Fascinating!
Really, really good, just the inspiration I have been looking for. They say there are no rules with art, but sometimes you can find yourself stuck in a particular style and this has really opened my eyes. Thank you.
Marcus thank you so much for your comment, I am so glad you found the video inspiring and you are right you can get stuck in a particular style, and its always good to try something different! :)
Love this technique...I had a little first go at something similar a few days ago and used gold on a small square brush to add 'buildings' and their reflections... Lovely at night with lights on in room.
It's bizarre, I can see more detail, or I think I can see more detail , than in a traditional style painting if that makes sense. Ive only just started to dabble in art but I can see myself heading in the abstract direction. Thanks for sharing 👍
Just gorgeous, such luscious colours! I paint using plastic cards and all sorts of ‘tools’ in acrylic but I didn’t think of using them in watercolour! Can’t wait to try now, thank you, I have just discovered your inspiring videos!
Thank you Cindy for your lovely comment, it’s so cool to use all these different tools and I like using them in Acrylics as well. Have fun having a go in watercolour! So glad you find the videos inspiring :-)
Love your ‘easy going’ way of painting and explaining, showing how you let things happen, but behind it all you master the medium and are one with how it flows! I get so relaxed and inspired to try what you showed in this video. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I just bought that little box of the desert colors by M. Graham because I live in the desert and wanted those colors and to try those paints. I heard so many great reviews about them. You have inspired me to try for urban and cityscapes. I was thinking I wanted to do landscapes, but I do love cities. Thanks for your great tutorials!
Rita, that's really kind of you to say... I agree it's so different to traditional watercolor painting and I really want to keep exploring the process :)
Hiya Karen, pleased to have been Intrigued to open your misty trees video and then watched this one. Recently an aunty offered me some watercolour equipment knowing that I would use them. They were of my late uncles I gladly accepted alrhough I use acrylics. Just wanted to say thank you for giving me inspiration to use his quality items and a welcome new challenge Thanks again
Dear Karen, your work is so inspiring. I came here via your video with beach and the two small islands. And now I'm completely fascinated by this way of rendering and the use of "tools" and little color accents. Really very very beautiful and exciting for the viewer. Maybe others feel the same way, but I'm going to try to implement your lesson right now tonight. Thank you very much for this and best regards from Germany. . . .
Regards to you Vince in Germany, great to read you comment! So pleased you like this style of painting! Have fun having a go!! Let me know how you get on! :)
Thank you so much for your comment Valerie really pleased that you found this technique interesting and inspired you to have a go… Pleased that you liked the exclamations as well, happy painting :-)
Thank you! Yes both floral and landscapes, will be uploading those videos in the next couple of weeks... the techniques is so much fun and you get fascinating results! :)
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this. After seeing this I am going to use packaging timber that split. From your example I can see many ways I can use it. Again thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with us.
Thank you so much Christine for your comment what a great idea using the packaging timber that split tip. These things can be so versatile in watercolour painting. So pleased that you like the tutorials, thanks again :-)
Another amazing tutorial. I would struggle with this one but will build up my confidence to do it in near future. I just completed the dandelion clock tutorial and it was incredibly fun.
@@KarenRiceArt i followed it yesterday. It doesn’t look entirely like yours but it was fun and still has that abstract element to it. I also used alternative colours. The colours created with the use of a debit card is amazing.
Thanks Susan so glad you enjoyed this video. Thank you for your question: I have used some of Daniel Smith's PrimaTek watercolours as hey seem to have a metallic look. Hope this was helpful? :)
Lurve this technique, and the painting. There’s an enigmatic atmospheric quality about the scene. I love paintings that affect my mood and evoke my imagination. This does that. I paint watercolours, and love a loose style, but never seen this style. I like. I like it a lot. Many thanks Karen. Subbed ,
Thank you so much Mary Ann, so glad that you liked the card technique! To answer your question you can do both, you can wipe it if you want certain colour, or mix it and not wipe it, that’s the fun bit about this style of painting! Hope this was helpful, happy painting :-)
I love this technique. Would you mind sharing more about your paper. Is it cold press or hot, and is it 140 lb. or 300 lb.? The end result is beautiful!
Thank you Carole for your question. I am using a watercolour block, 300gms (140lbs). It's a not surface but you could use hot pressed. I have put a link in the listing, hope this was helpful :)
stunning. breathtaking. I can't wait to try this out. I think I'll also try bamboo skewers and a palette knife I use for masking fluid. impressive and highly inspiring. subscribed.
@@KarenRiceArt Thank you very much for your kind response, Karen. If I would use cold pressed paper would the water flow be different or more difficult to control? I love the soft and smooth look in your painting and wonder that if one uses cold pressed paper the look would be less smooth and soft? Sorry to bother you more, just one more question: do you stretch the paper (watering it for 5 minutes and then taping it to a board) to make it not buckle when using lots of water?
So pleased to have recently come across your channel... love this style of watercolour. It reminds me of when I visited my brother who was in Hong Kong in the early '80's, reminiscent of the wet and humid weather and the reflections of the squat and crambed high rises along the water fronts, distant buildings being consumed by the low water-laden clouds. Did you have any reference for this piece of work or was it imaginative? Whatever, very impressed!
Thank you so much David, really pleased you like this style of painting! It is very free! Btw, love your description of early 80's Hong Kong! I did not have a reference photo for this and yes it was from my imagination. I love painting scenes of London, so I was channelling my memories of looking over one of the bridges crossing the Thames :)
