The criteria I set myself here may seem a little odd initially. However, I like how this forces me to research and include songs that I otherwise wouldn't have and don't even know. This may make it tricky for people from a certain location. Equally, it may make it easier, I'm not too sure.
We will see how it goes 🙂🎶

In the UK, the Wurzels got to number 1 with Brand New Combine Harvester which was a parody of Melanie’s Brand New Key!

Funnily enough, I didn't know that at the time, then I found Brand New Key during my research and thought,'this sounds familiar' - at which point I had to include it. I'm glad somebody picked up on it though 😌

Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden" went #1 all around the world. 16 different countries. Unheard of in 1971.

I didn't realise it was that many. The research I found said it was a big hit in 16 countries, but "only" topped the charts in 9. Either way, as you say, it's still incredibly impressive for the time.

So many songs I haven't heard since the seventies, and for most I couldn't come up with a title. Two I only got because I sang them in choir (Silly Love Songs and It's Too Late). I didn't get I'll Be There, but declared, "I'm pretty sure that's Michael Jackson" and guessed the Jackson 5. I remember You Light Up My Life being HUGE; a friend sang it in a talent show. I got Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, despite the cognitive dissonance of the 70s being the wrong decade (I did not get the artist.)
Fun quiz and would love to see another decade (or two or three).

It sounds like the quiz almost transported you back in time, which I think is fantastic! It's nice to have those memory connections associated with songs.

I'm pretty sure that Bo Donaldson and the Heywood
sang Billy don't bea hero and Paper Lace sang The night Chicago Died unless one or the other covered it.
