The Day AFTER Pearl Harbor

  • What did Japan do the day AFTER the Pearl Harbor attack?...
… Invaded the Philippines, that’s what!
On December 8th, Japan caught US forces on the ground when they launched their first attack on airfields north of Manila. General Douglas MacArthur, who commanded US and Filipino forces, led his troops through a series of renowned defensive manoeuvres over the next several months, though sadly it was a losing battle.
In the end, MacArthur was evacuated, and the remaining American and Filipino forces were too low on supplies to fend off a final Japanese offensive at the Bataan Peninsula.
After the battle, the 76,000 remaining American and Filipino prisoners were led on a gruelling 66-mile march, later coming to be known as the Bataan Death March. Best estimates suggest that 2500 Filipinos and 500 Americans died during the march.

My great grandfather participated in the battle for bataan. He was originally a physics teacher in high school or some college and was smart, which was probably why he is still alive today. He told us that during the death march, some prisoners were beaten to death for simply requesting food, and sometimes they would take stops to bury alive some POW's. My great grandfather, deapite being skinny, endured it all better than the rest. He obaerved the the japanese soldiers would often make traps for the POW's like offering water or rest, if they took the bait, it was no doubt that that would be the last time you'll see them. I dont know the specific details from when they got to the camp, all i know is that he was still alive from then on. He managed to escape with one other POW by sliding off a cliff after a few japanese soldiers ordered them to deliver his lunch. He managed to trek all the way from there to his hometown of albay, bicol and hid in his family's house until McArthur arrived. He then participated again as one of McArthur's
scouts. He then lived on teaching physics in college and died in the year 1999. I wrote this as a message that attrocities are real and should not be made fun of. I am not pointing out that last bit in the video, rather, this is a message to shame those people who make fun of these attrocities and barely recognize them. I want to thank the creator for shedding a bit of light into the death-march and not forgetting the struggle for the people who lived in southeast asia in those years and i salute them for their bravery.

MacArthur did a really big oof during the defence of the Philippines. The original plan for defending against Japan was to hold on to strategic areas and wait for reinforcements from the mainland.
He did not have enough forces to keep Japan off from every beach in Luzon, but that is exactly what he tried to do. So it might've been possible for the US to not completely lose the Philippines to Japan if MacArthur did not spread his forces so thin.

Curiosity: The Peruvian ambassador Ricardo Rivera Schreiber found out about the plans for the attack in January 1941 thanks to his valet Felipe Akakawa and his friend Furukido Yoshuda. The former was talking with the interpreter Yasukisu Suganuma, who was the cousin of a worker in the Japanese Navy Ministry. He told her several international political events that came to pass, including a plan to attack Pearl Harbor. Although the latter was a professor at the University of Tokyo and an interpreter for the Ministry of War, in a meeting he heard that Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto had devised plans to attack the American base. With two sources confirming the same information, he warned Cordell Hull, then US secretary. Instead of preparing defenses for the assault, the high-ranking military ordered to withdraw only the newer ships with their personnel to prevent further damage and the damage done to the older ships with their workers was used as an excuse to participate in the war.

Since when did the US have helicopters… in 1941? Edit: the US used Helicopters in 1943. Testing in 1940s. And so a helicopter in 1941-1942 is out of place. More in the replies. Edit 2: Nvm, The US had helicopters in 1942, and so possibly can transport generals.

Macarthur was brilliant in doing all he could, but not only were his men exhausted and outnumbered but they had absolutely no ammunition in the end or medical supplies either.
He was forced by the president to leave even though he kept insisting he wanted to stay with his men and the Filipinos.
He was threatened to be arrested and drug out and then placed in prison if he refused, so he literally had no choice.
If America had listened to him, we'd nuked China and North Korea both and wouldn't have the international problems we have now.
