Accused drug kingpin Hakan Ayik has been remanded in custody after appearing in court in Istanbul.
The former Sydney drug dealer was among 42 other men who faced a judge on Monday 6th November 2023 following raids in Istanbul.
He was arrested from the upmarket Turkish suburbs at Kemer Country.
Ayik will never have to appear in an Australian court due to his decision to renounce his citizenship, a strategic move made as law enforcement authorities closed in on him. This proactive step ensures that he can evade the jurisdiction of the Australian legal system and avoid any potential legal consequences stemming from his actions.
The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's office accuses Ayik of being a leader in a criminal group operating in Turkey. He's also accused of money laundering in Turkey, connected to a criminal operation that reportedly moved a significant amount of illegal drugs, around 10 to 15 tons.
Two other individuals, Baris Turkel and Jimmy Avaijan, were also detained, and 18 out of the 42 arrested earlier are now in jail, waiting for their trials.
Ayik has been evading Australian authorities since 2010, when he was linked to a massive heroin shipment worth $230 million. He was said to be the leader of a group responsible for moving as much as $1.5 billion worth of drugs into Australia each year.
The Australian Federal Police have been pursuing Ayik on a global scale and provided assistance to Turkish authorities with their investigation. They've accused him of causing a lot of suffering due to the drugs he imported into Australia.
