This breaks my heart, because EMTs are some of the best people I've ever met and have literally saved my life on multiple occasions. I still look back and wish I could thank first responders and let them know how much they did for me. How they manage to always be strong and in a good mood despite no sleep and almost no pay is beyond me. I wish they could feel as good about themselves as is merited instead of feeling regret for not being perfect.

When my husband and I started dating, I knew he was a volunteer firefighter, and he told me “I was a volunteer before I met you, and I’m staying one for as long as I can. If you don’t like that or can’t live with it, you’d better bail now while you can!” Not only did I stay with him, I surprised us both by becoming a volunteer firefighter myself after we got married! He hung up the gear nine years ago after 28 years of volunteering, but I’m approaching my 24th year with the department this summer, so I’d say it worked out great!

Late to the game but my late father once responded to a trucker who had a heart attack rolled down an embankment into a garage, which killed him gorily. My dad, coming home and relaying the events, when I asked him if he was okay, said, “I’m a little hungry. The guy had a Twinkie on his seat but I figured it’d be bad form to eat it on scene.” To which I responded, yep you’re fine. It’s the dark humor that keeps the wheels turning.

The Shut Up Gland is actually pretty effective, considering everything that strains it. That said, after a long shift it can sometimes have to forcibly reset, prompting the first responder to scream into a pillow in frustration until their lungs give out. This is a vital process, allowing the Shut Up Gland to "reboot" and allow it to continue its vital function under nigh unreasonable stress loads.

I worked night shifts (7a-7p) for 20 years as a respiratory therapist at a large hospital, and by the time of the AM shift change, we were nearly delirious and would say and laugh at the most inappropriate things. LOL! My superior was a fire fighter for 9 years and had a wicked sense of humor. He told me stories about picking up body parts from motorcycle wrecks as this was something he would do at least twice a day. One subject hit a guard rail that was already hit by a previous accident so it was mangled up and sliced off the bikers head and arm. Cap told him to go in the woods and find the rest of the victim. My guy later came out hold an arm and saying "Hey Cap!" as he held up the severed appendage making the hand into a middle finger "fuck you". This wonderful gem is something I will never forget as what sparked the story was him finding out that I rode a motorcycle.
tldr: Dark sense of humor should be a bit bigger imo.

This is spot-on and largely mirrors those of us who work in public transit. Many of us have and use dark humor when talking about things we deal with. The shut up gland in particular applies to us as well, and it's also rendered nearly useless after midnight. LOL ... especially after working nearly 15 hours. On many occasions I've had late night rendezvous with our local EMS responders to assist me with some of our characters, always inebriated or high on something.

I agree. The shut up gland shuts off late at night (admin is not around). I will contest that energy drinks although not as effective, can still flow mysteriously around the brain. In corrections, the wanting a promotion memory far exceeds real life job experience. And dark humor is about 80 percent of the brain (next to living, breathing, eating, hating life, regrets on working during a full moon, and absolutely hate when the shift supervisor you relieve says have a quiet night). And this is what 12 year's of overnight corrections brings you. Loads of joy and bull s#!t.

On 48’s that “shut up gland” is only good for about 10-14 hours. After about 10 years efficiency decreases at a rate of 7.5% every year on the job. Please note that it does not work with probationary firefighters when they start telling war stories.

I remember I wanted to be a firefighter (now retired law enforcement) back in the early 70’s. After a Marine Corps tour and some college, I had the opportunity to assist in fighting a brush fire on a hillside. It was hot and smokey but I never thought about the weight of a charged hose line since I was the one assisting. After I was relieved from my duties by a professional firefighter I returned to my car where my parents were waiting. They asked if I was alright since I was now a pretty color of purple and coughing my lungs up. That was the day I decided to change my career path from firefighting to law enforcement. Somehow chasing bad guys and getting shot at seemed better than walking into a burning building and having the floor collapse under my feet. Just sayin. You fellas in the Fire Service have all my respect and adoration. I just wish they put that stutter horn on my police car.😂

As someone who deals with first responders, I know it's very tempting to train and reinforce their shut up gland, especially if you are in a teaching position.
Save yourself the time, it doesn't work.
    They're really like toddlers.
    1. If they not allowed to do something, they'll attempt to do it.
    2. If they're told that they're not allowed to do it, they'll attempt to do it, and try to do it in a way that you see it, and they'll be 100% getting away with it.
    3. They demand your constant attention, especially if you're busy and they're not.
    4. They actively will look for ways to get under your skin, one way or another, for them getting on your nerves is what playing fetch with a dog is to you.
    5. Medics specifically enjoy to physically hurt people a little, especially friends, after all that treatment is more fun when they can intentionally add some additional pain in the process of providing aid.
    6. Exception to rule 5 is when shit is actually life threatening
    7. No matter how long you work with first responders, they'll always surprise you by doing something that you never expected
    Pro tip:
Whenever I organize something, I always show the planning to my first responder friends, whilst communicating non verbally "you won't be able to"
They'll find whatever loophole is in there and will mockingly explain to you step by step in detail how they would definitely go out their way to exploit the loophole they found.
Fix that loophole if they're gonna show up, telling them to "please not do it" isn't enough, because of point one and two
