  • The Tamron 20-40 2.8 is a lens that covers a somewhat unusual focal range, but I think it's incredibly practical. This video explains where it can fit in a lens lineup and explores why Tamron might be better known as "Tamright" 😬

    It's so great when you don't only talk about the lens youre reviewing, so much value in comparing it to other products as well. And, and I'm a Tamron lover with a beast of more than 1kg of weight, the 35-150 f2.0-2.8 which is now my go to for absolutely every and any job I get. It's great for photo, video, you have that f2.0 quite far into zooming and I cannot praise it enough. Imagine being out of the way for a performing band but still getting closeups, I take my A7III and A6700 for extra reach, I'm in heaven. Also a Sigma 16mm when the band wants one "hey, grab us alla from the back...oh, and the audience as well please 😅😅😅😅

      In an ideal world I would have a 15-400mm f1.4 lens with constant aperture, amazing autofocus, built in stabilization, and weather sealing. AND it would be the same size as this Tamron 😅

    Got my copy of this lens last week as well and I really like it so far. Just filmed my first video with it which I'm editing now and it's super sharp. It's probably going to replace my Sigma 28-70mm as my go to all purpose lens because I can still crop in with super 35 mode on the A7C, but having that 20 and 24mm focal lengths is something I missed when on the Sigma plus it's so much smaller and lighter. Love that Tamron has been charting their own course with uncommon focal ranges on their Zooms lately. This one's a winner in my book!

    I have a Nikon 5300 that I use and have had for a long time. I does the job and I am still learning the ins and outs of photography. It came with the kit lens and I purchased a Tamron AF 70-300mm and a Nikkor AF-S 50mm. It does not come with tracking AF and I figure I am due for an upgrade at some point. But does a AF 35mm have a better upside than the 20-40mm? Thanks!

    Hi! I have this lens, and I have heard that there is vignetting at 20mm with a 67mm nd filter. I'm also worried about there being vignetting if I use a step up ring. What nd filter and/or step up ring do you use with this lens? I was looking at getting the Polar Pro Peter McKinnon filter with mist. Should I get that (if so what size), or should I get a different filter? Thanks!

    Tom your videos always look like a unicorn puked all over the place and I absolutely LOVE that! Your use of color in your shot is probably my favorite on RUclips. Just thought you should know :)
    This lens is a strange one... I'm a noobtuber looking for the perfect all-in-one lens to do talking head / b-roll shots and, this price point is just a little high since you can't buy it used. If it hit like f2 or something... or 1.8 I'd be a litttttle more excited, but 2.8 ohh tough call.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +1

      At first I thought this was an insult, but then I felt complimented 😁
      As a "Nootuber™" I think it definitely makes sense to get a fast lens like f2 or 1.8, especially if you find yourself filming indoors a lot. The FE 50 1.8 is a super budget friendly option, but you'll need a lit of distance between you and the camera. THere's also a 35 1.8 that's a little more expensive than the 50, but will give you a bit more width. 👍

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio Год назад +1

      @@tombuck Haha it is most definitely a compliment! Unicorns are a magical thing!
      After bouncing around with focal lengths for my talking head shot I have settled on (for the moment) the 28mm F2. An oddball sure but I seem to have an affinity for janky lenses.
      And 50mm would literally be a talking head shot because that's all that would fit in. Sadly my heads not THAT nice.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider Год назад

      @@thesahdstudio The 28mm f/2 is actually a stellar starter lens. I don't think it's sharp enough for photo on the latest bodies, but for video, it's more than sharp enough, and it's like $250 used. It is tiny, and it focuses fast and silently. While 35mm is my favorite focal length for photo, given that Sony cameras often start cropping a bit in various shooting modes, I often find 35mm to be too long in practice for video. It's also very useful in Super 35 mode. The only reason I don't have it anymore is because I have lots of expensive lenses now, but it's perfect for anyone just needing a basic wide angle lens. Especially at that used budget, there are very other good options, even from third parties.

    So we have similar thoughts. I actually sold my Sony 16-35 GM, and I bought the Tamron 20-40. I didn’t feel comfortable taking out the GM lens and risk damaging it lol. I’m more comfortable taking out the Tamron instead with less investment risk. I was ok selling the Sony 16-35 GM because I’m hearing of a possible MK2 version coming out in 2023. In addition, my newly 24-70 GM2 is the same size as the Sony 16-35GM 😳. So I’m expecting a Sony 16-35GM2 to be at a similar size to the Tamron 20-40. 'Purple Guy' review was not all that complimentary and to be honest I have no need - My main camera Bag has the Tamron 35-150, and the Sony 35mm GM and the 16-35 GM in it with the A74. When it just for me (unless I have my bag with me) the iPhone 14 Pro Max (with the new DJI OM6 gimbal) is all I use most of the time. I was also really close to getting that one because the extra reach to 70mm would be super nice, but ultimately I wanted the smaller/lighter form factor.

    Nice vid, thanks. Fun fact: Sony owns approx. 15% of Tamron… no wonder the newer Tamron glas works that well with Sony bodies :)

      Yes- I just did a podcast about this recently. It’s very interesting if you look at their lens lineups- definitely explains the “unusual” focal ranges that Tamron chooses 😁

    That's a casual zoom lens, But for a 20-40mm.
    It can zoom in not that far by standards, When zoom out it's fairly wide.
    But more like if I played with them, It's going to be like W I D E, TELE! (It's just me messing around with a zoom lens)
    Zooming lens in and out is really fun, Actually.
    I can even do that with smartphones.

    • @tombuck

      There’s definitely something extra fun about being able to physically zoom a lens 😁

      @@tombuck I do prefer both the physical and digital zoom, They do give a slightly different results.

    Dang that looks like a fun lens. Although, 20 seems so close to 24 which I shoot all the time. Stupid $2k g master lenses.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +1

      There's not a HUGE difference between 20 and 24, but for vloggy stuff where you're holding the camera at arms length it's way nicer.
