"LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A northwest Las Vegas valley couple claims they were sold an empty dream by two hosts of a popular home-remodeling show.
Paul and Mindy King recently married in 2018 and bought a house to start the next chapter in their lives. But they say the experience has been a nightmare.
“They’re making their millions of dollars. Their fame. They’re living their lifestyle based off of people like us, that put our trust into them,” Mindy King said."

I am a house painter, I was called in for an emergency paint job after an HGTV team had come in . They only painted what the camera would see! The front foyer was painted only where your eye went as you walked in , the side where the front door was and closet were not done, anywhere they did not shoot ( under the desk, side of fridge etc) was not painted. The team had 24 hours to complete but they left and called me, the owner was panicked I stayed up all night and finished everything properly. I found out afterwards this is not uncommon with these shows what the camera doesn’t “see” doesn’t count and they often bring in outside workers so they can get some sleep it is all phoney. Sad that the owners actually paid for this!
Daaaamn! 😮
yep
Well goddamn. That's a cold hearted move to make...
Hmmm, sounds like an old timey Hollywood movie set where one half of a bar looks real and the other half is just cameras and film crew making the movie…
Nobody ever sued PBS "This Old House" because they were real home builders. That show spent numerous episodes renovating a home and focusing on fixing the "bones" of the home. I despise HGTV fake quick home make overs.
Honestly, I was the most shocked that both of these dudes are straight married men.
lol
Millions of bisexual men in America are married
Never get your home renovated by anyone on television.

@@aslongitsconsensualnoharmdone I’m sorry. I didnt realize we were so well acquainted. You presume to know so much about me. You don’t know my name, age, gender or even location yet you’re presuming to tell me if I reside in a house or not. I hope you are joking because you sound stupid.
Electrical contractor here 🙋♂️. I can definitely tell you $200k for a remodel of an average home is on the high end, the work should be top tier at that cost. Also, flippers/remodel contractors are notorious for hiring unskilled, unlicensed, and often undocumented workers. The cheapest subcontractors they can find is who they get and you'll see that in the work.
If you do contract a company for a remodel, demand that every subcontractor they use is licensed and to provide proof at the time of signing, and that the license holder will oversee their part of the job every day by site visiting every day their portion of the work is being done. This is extremely important because it is pretty common for contractors to send guys out to do work , but they never go onto the job to inspect and problems show up at the very end or when you've moved in and start finding things, then you gotta start tearing walls open again trying to fix stuff.
Excellent advise
If they paid $200k upfront then what was the perk of being on tv??
Unfortunately these filthy Canadians laughed all the way to their mega mansions in Hollywood. Unreal.
I was wondering the same thing
My parents have been screwed over by just about every single contractor that's ever done any work on their house in the 44 years they've there. And most of the time, those contractors were recommended by their friends. They didn't get screwed over to this extent, thank goodness, but still. They also watch a ton of HGTV. I'm definitely telling them about this. If it gives me even an hour less HGTV time when I visit them, I'm calling it a win.
Used to enjoy the show but, stopped watching it when it became so formulaic. Weeks in they would "discover" problems that any builder worth the name would have picked up on in first inspection, then the budget would have to be reshuffled and instead of choosing cheaper options for certain areas, they'd simply remove certain rooms completely. Yawn.
For 200K, it better be perfect. Property brothers claim they are experts. They're not. They are 2 talking heads. My husband rebuilt our home, and he's a carpenter/state certifiedbuilding inspector. It's expensive and takes a lot of time. Make sure your contactor is insured, registered with the state, and get a referral from someone that had wirk done that you liked and inspected that work.
This isn't the first time, that HGTV has had lawsuits about damaged properties. This isn't surprising.
Renovations done to your home via a reality TV show, what could go wrong? These shows are on a schedule, the work is bound to be shoddy when they have two or three weeks to do all the work, no matter how extensive. Kind of asking for trouble.
"Flippers ruined what had been a great middle class nieghborhood I lived in by turning things into rentals when they couldn't get "their price".
I use to work for Johnathan and Drew 😫 IM NOT SURPRISED!!
Oh really? Do tell. 😎
A lot of house construction companies try to get by on the cheapest materials possible. Have to watch them on that. Even private contractors do shoddy jobs.
D.R. Horton is being sued all over the country for shite craftsmanship.
They've always seemed extremely douchey, I've never liked them in the slightest
Often, you don’t get what you pay for. People buy an image. A photo. Businesses are about making the most profit with the least cost and effort. We have largely opted for a throw away culture where things need to be “updated” to new standards every few years. My grandparents, for example, had their furniture from the time they bought it and I still have the waffle maker they had. Things were meant to be fixed. I think now mostly things are temporary. Just my opinion.
My new refrigerator wasn't connected properly, and flooded the whole downstairs. The contractor was licensed and bonded but moved to another state and declared bankruptcy. So, I was left stranded with the work not completed. There is no guarantee the work will get done. You're at there mercy.
Insurance would cover that.
Not the first lawsuit brought to them.
So… the production company is NOT vetting and certifying their contractors? If so, they reap what they deserve. Sue them in into syndication.
As a home owner I never trusted fancy renovations because
I witnessed many bad outcomes
I always hated to hear what happened to families that had their homes fixed up on tv. The values went up and so did the taxes. A lot of families had to move out and sale their homes
Where were the local authorities and all of this? A renovation of that size would require building permits and inspections by local offices.
They are bought and paid for!! 💯
DIY has always been the way to go for those of us below the poverty line. Hiring anyone to do anything is pretty much unheard of. I live in a subsidized apartment complex and they encourage you to have the maintenance workers fix things for you but I’ve been waiting for a replacement sprayer for my kitchen sink for 2 years. Finally did it myself. I needed a screen for my door, waited a year, did it myself. Windows wouldn’t open THREE YEARS, did it myself.
When work like this is done there should be permits and inspections done before moving back in.

Anna is so correct about people not being able to do handy work around the house. I did a stint in Los Angeles as a handyman and people could not even change the dryer vent hose. It was crazy. Also to save money I would be my own contractor and hire accordingly
Sounds to me like they just half assed the job just to rush the hours and take the check.
When I worked at the Doors and Windows desk at Home depot it became all too apparent how willing home flippers were to cut corners and worry only about making things look good enough, long enough to sell. And how unqualified most of these do-it-yourself home flippers were or the guys off craigslist they hired to do the work.
100%
1:30 That's why I picked a house that was second owner, not remodeled. Barely anything touched from new 40+ years ago. (Seven years later, I still have the old lady borders in the bathrooms and curtains that came with the house over the sink).
can almost smell it from here, good luck and knock on wood
I agree with your sentiment, but not your slogan. Here’s mine. In the US, you don’t always get what you pay for, but you always pay for what you get. I hired a licensed contractor to build my cabinets. It took 2 1/2 years to get the cabinets completed, with mediocre quality, and I’m still owed two shelves after three years.
That’s ridiculous, my mom got tipped off too and my cousins remodel was left in it’s demolished state. It’s rough
@@shripleypibbles I am sorry to hear that. There are things you can do, at least pin CA. 1) if you have a written agreement or evidence of the agreement, and you have paid a deposit or paid for the job, you can put a lien on their business until the issue is fixed, 2) If it is a licensed contractor, you can make a complaint and get their license pulled.
@@davidligon6088 thanks, that’s good advice. Unfortunately things were handled too informally because he was recommended by a friend. I am normally a bit skeptical when someone recommends a family member myself, but live and learn.

If the property brothers are putting their name to it, they own it. This is disgusting.
yea for sure :( and unfortunately these shows have a huge track record of this, it's scary to google
Lol, totally random...but I was picking up my father a few months ago from Penn Station in Manhattan, and he was standing on the corner right behind the Property Brothers lol.
I always wondered how these huge renovations are funded. £200k upfront is a lot.
dealing wth the same in my "luxury" apartment--looked beautful but cheaply built and THIN walls on top of everything else
Yeah I knew someone who was on the show and they messed everything up and they were going to put him on a payment plan. When he told them it was too much they just left the mess and abandoned him. They also have the right to make you look anyway they want. So they can make you look like you said something when you didn’t.
It would be great to do our own work around the house. The issue is that corporate America believes that time belongs to them!!😂😂😂😂
😓 yes
It's not the first or second legal complaint I've seen against the Scott Brothers. They never admit any liability and have a ream of legal documents to protect themselves. They are posers who give us contractors a bad name. I've met and worked with quite a few "TV RENO Stars in Toronto and its the same game perpetuated by HGTV and the crappy contractors they use (a majority of the shows use private contractors they hire not the stars you think are doing the work) or the ridiculous timeliness they are forced to work with. There is a couple shows that are produced by the stars/contractors themselves who also own and operate construction/renovation companies who are honest brokers of the trade but you cannot go by that alone if your approached to participate on a reno show. In fact, you have little to no recourse when things go wrong due to the legal jumble word game you'll find yourself in if you do.
Your only weapon is the media and it will be a bumby ride to get satisfaction as well as an expensive one because lawyers want there slice off your pain as well. Beware. Cheers 🇨🇦
All these shows have had legal issues. No big deal. These homeowners are over the top. Always wanting more yet not paying for more.
The property Bros do not do the work. Anytime you see them doing anything, it is just a little footage for the show.
@@eileenmcdonald1599 agreed!

Its up to the home owners to follow the rules. And do all their own vetting
I feel like I heard this same type of story within the past year. Could have been this same show, or another. TV wants to fix my house....no thanks
This is actually rather disappointing. :-(
Norm, Tom, Richard, and Roger from This Old House never had these problems.
Yes, I would trust TOH. They take months to do a renovation and every aspect of the house is fully evaluated along the way from beginning to end. These other shows I’ve watched do these huge renovations in a few days or a week. I don’t see how this is possible if they are making sure it’s done right, perfect and made to last. I’ve also seen many horrific color and pattern choices on some of these surprise makeovers, over the top, impractical and unlivable. Some even ignored what the homeowner told them they did not want touched or changed and they did it anyway. Many of these shows have to work with what their show backers want them to promote which often goes against what the homeowner really wanted. I stopped watching most of them because I get disgusted by how outrageous they are, but This Old house has taught me a lot over the last 30 years and I’ve gotten brave enough to tackle some projects with success and realized I would have paid someone a lot of money to do something that looked harder than it actually was. It also showed me when I would be in over my head and what to watch out for and being very specific in my contract when hiring a contractor to do what I needed. Thanks TOH!
What a nightmare. This is why I always do my own renos. HUbbie and I installed hardwood floors last year in our living room for the first time by ourselves and it looks great. Those guys are hated here in Canada.
We've had the same problem in Canada as well. Never trust the bull crap that falls out of the mouths of their mouths.
Mike Holmes is a comedian
I always thought it was funny when they would show the one brother working but he was never sweaty
If there was work done then there had to be a permit from the city and there should have been an inspection after the work was completed.
Mold build up in a dishwasher. ? There are cleaning products to prevent mold. Not a contractors problem. Hygiene?
But they didn’t have a dishwasher before the remodel so who is the nasty one now looks like the contractor put a used dishwasher from the scrap yard
House flippers are all trash. Never saw a flip that wasn't a nightmare
It's not just reality shows. This goes on every day because people don't know what is good work and what is bad. The ceramic tile. Are you aware that when tiling a board floor that floor has to be at least 1 1/4" thick and in good shape to keep the tile and grout from cracking due to floor flex? You need to do your homework, have a pro help you to write specifications, and then retain the right to do daily inspections and reject shoddy work. Any descent contractor will also be able to get a performance bond before work is started. If they don't do the work properly and in a timely manner the bond is forfeit and you get all or some of your money back.
As a home inspector i can believe these shows and hosts dont have a clue what they are crapping out for your viewing pleasure

After being part of one of the Extreme Makeover houses, its ALL a scam!! Everything looks good for the camera after being heavily edited. The stars of the show get flown in at the end of the process, rush arpund to fake some footage, turn the house over, then fly right back home
It was all just for TV, flashy and fake
Nothing new. Here in Canada it's been said for a while that property brothers do a horrible job.

I love the way they can remodel a home in a half hour and folks believe they can take these projects on.

"This Old House." Good in 1979. Good now. A consistent, American classic.
Those guys are unwatchable
My sister pretty much went through the same thing. It was not anything to do with TV but it was over $200,000 remodel. They finally found out the problem. Was the general contractor had all of these different subs that didn't really ever get all the work done And frankly screwed up a bunch of it. So there was a big whole bag on the final payment from my sister in which the contractor said they would sue for it and my sister said see you in court. That was a year and a half ago and nobody has ever filed the suit for any kind of payment, so it's sad to see Jonathan and Drew have a problem because I did used to watch it show, I haven't seen it in a long time. Anyway, I thought it was good people and they very well maybe. I just need to see their reputation screwed up because of what's going on here with those folks.
HGTV is over all a bunch of scam shows. Just like all those late night get rich commercials
Also... the timeline to get the remodel done is insanely rushed to meet the show's deadlines. I'm assuming cutting corners is mandatory.
Tim and Al from Tool Time always fixed the problems before turning property over.
😊
Ask MTV and xhibit why pimp my ride is no longer a show. Same schemes different endeavor.
I only do work on my home or car because I'm poor. I had no idea that people with the means to pay to have it fixed would want to do the work themselves. The only satisfaction I get is being just slightly less poor doing it myself. Much rather pay.
@@aslongitsconsensualnoharmdone still no thanks. TV is literally selling entertainment, my living space is not for others entertainment, and I'm sure corners are cut very regularly in order to fit into the production schedule. Sounds like the renovation was launched around 2018, after the couple got married.
My dad and I paid $150,000 to level a home that was badly tilted, replace the concrete supports of the stilts that were holding it up, replace those stilts replace two thirds of the hardwood floors, instill two new bathrooms and the kitchen, replace several windows, rip down two walls, and build new plexiglass railing along the stairs. Plus repainting, coating the roof with a rubberized membrane. That was in 2010. In Hawaii, the most expensive place in the country. Probably cost twice that much now.

I don't want to learn how to do plumbing, or wiring, or even painting. That is why you have professionals that you can hire. I just think reality tv has nothing to do with reality. People who agree to have their houses in the show should read their contracts before signing and check references of the people who are going to do the actual work.
Pretty sure I have read in the past about Love It or List It being sued and doing the same shoddy work.
I would have to hire a professional to fix my dyi.

200,000 is NOT enough money to remodel an entire house . The program foots most of the labor costs
True that. MY cousin paid 75,000 just to add a small piece on to their kitchen to make it bigger by 5 feet
All HGTV show are crap. My sister’s roommate was on House Hunter International years ago she had already been living in the house she chose on the show for 2 months before filming. They had move their stuff out to disguise the fact they were already living there.

Their definition of reality seems to differ from mine. Z
"reality tv" caters to vapid viewers who don't expect much out of life. They're easily amused off others misery... Social media/ reality tv in a nutshell.
Why would you pay a TV show to remodel your house? Where is the benefit to you as the HO? The show is using you to make money, they can cough up the cash.
I just looked it up. In Nevada a Contractor can only ask for 10% or $1,000 up front. $200K upfront. Instant loss in a courtroom, hopefully.
the board doesn't care about anything here
contractors can have a active license then start work and get payments and leave, the next week you can look up their license and it will state that their license had been revoked a year prior (this has happen to two people I know, one $89k and other $18k)
things run different here in Vegas
This is NOT the only suit against HGTV and one or other of the hosts. I have no idea why anyone would agree to do this work, you really have nothing to say about what is done. If I see another piece of white subway tile again I'm going to toss my cookies.

A reality TV show by any other appearance is still a reality TV show. An expose has been produced about the work on Chip and Joanna Gaines' TV show, too. Same scenario as Property Bros: everything done solely for the TV appearance; things not visible done shoddily; as soon as filming wraps, the place begins falling apart. Also, in the Gaines instance, it's alleged a large proportion of the houses become short-term, vacation rentals rather than the residences for the respective families featured in the TV episodes (as the show makes it appear).
The reason why we see moments during the renovation, but not the real renovation going on.
Why would they do that?
They normally subcontract out the work that that’s performed on the shows. It’s not the property brothers doing the work that’s just for the show.
exactly
Holy crap- rounded to the approximate five years since the completion date, they’d already be owed over $9 MILLION!
Unfortunately, $200K is NOT a lot of money when it comes to renovations.
