Excellent video! I’m an almost 74 year old woman. I’ve been doing resistance training in addition to regular walking for over four years now and am stronger than ever. At least 4-5 times a week workouts, I use 20 lb weights for shoulder presses. It’s definitely phenomenal for mental health! Thanks for all you do!

It took me a long time to begin, but I'm working out (lifting) twice a week at a local gym, and it is making a huge difference in every respect that Dr. Hyman mentions in the video. At 72, I'm actually adding muscle and decreasing my body fat, I'm perceptibly stronger and more energetic, and overall I just feel better. My blood work also reflects some benefits, my fasting insulin decreased by about 50%, along with a similar decrease in hs-CRP, for example.

Great advice! 🏋️‍♂️ I'm 69 yo and I'm in the gym 5x a week and mix it up with resistance training, cardio, and yoga. I also walk around 7 miles a day. I divide them into 2-3 walks after a meal.

It's surprising to learn that resistance training can improve mental health more effectively than some traditional therapies. This really encourages people to start with simple exercises, as even just a few minutes a day can provide significant benefits for both the mind and the body.

All solid advice. But you skipped the most fundamental part of working out. Especially if you want to lift weights after 30. Your core stability. A proper core stability work-out can be the difference between smooth lifts and injury-inducing lifts. Everyone should do at least one core work-out every week.
It will improve your flexibility, mobility, muscle endurance, cardio and general posture.

Everyone on my moms side of the family never exercised a day in their life and they all lived into their 80’s, on my dads side they were all hard working physical labor workers and died in their 70’s, I’ve worked out all my life and plus being a laborer and now I’m 62 I do weights and cycling, I competed in sports starting at a young age all the way up until I was in my 40’s. I had a stroke 9 years ago and have so many medical problems. I eat healthy as well but no matter what I do I still have medical problems, I would hate to think how bad off I would be if I didn’t try to take care of myself. And yes I’m pre diabetic despite trying to stay away from sugar

I'm in my early 60's in the gym almost daily, work with a trainer twice weekly and not only feel and look great; my blood panels according to my doctor agrees. The gym that I go to, there is a fair number of "older" gym members who work out frequently along with everyone else. All different ages, shapes and sizes and from beginner to highly advanced body builders. Starting out at the gym can be intimidating but that can be easily overcome. For those not familiar on how to use the exercise equipment and routines, I would would urge novices to seek advice from a trainer.

It’s okay to begin with body weight and light weights high reps as resistance. But for menopausal women, low reps & HEAVY weight are KEY. YOU MUST LIFT HEAVY SHIT. That and sprint interval cardio instead of just steady state activity like walking or biking. Hyman doesn’t touch on the polarized training that women require to overcome hormonal changes in menopause. Look up Dr Stacy Sims if you’re reading this & you’re a woman reaching menopause. DR. STACY SIMS. You’re welcome. 20:55

It upsets me to watch these types of videos, as my mother is bedridden with spinal fractures due to advanced osteoporosis, advanced cervical spondylosis, now kyphosis. She eats very well, supplements with vits and mins, takes natural supps like fermented turmeric, black garlic, blackseed oil, plenty of water, walks in park in wheelchair for fresh air, Vit D, plus Vit D supps... but her lack of movement is such an issue, as she literally cant stand for too long at all and is very weak, with bad muscle atrophy. Tried hydro pool but need heated ones as she gets cold instantly from lack of bodyheat, and heated pools are expensive to use and only via private methods. She has bad stomach issues as well, but we got her off nasty acid blockers after ten years of malabsorption and malnutrition. Ginger and Turmeric really helps.

Being bed ridden or wheelchair bound will come inevitably cause and perpetuate muscle atrophy. Two suggestions: is she a candidate for kyphoplasty ( cement used to heal a vertebral fracture)? Consult with physiatrist ( rehab specialist) . Is she a candidate for bed exercises and wheelchair exercises? How old is your mom? Has she or her docs considered medications for osteoporosis? If she is spontaneously fracturing it may be worth considering bone medications. Even if she remains wheelchair bound she needs an exercise program to prevent the consequences of being immobile which are pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus . Good luck.
