How I love Jeffrey Lee Pierce, even though I know that everyone who knew him said he was a hard man to love. I love the fact that - before he was a rock'n'roller in his own right - he was a proud and unabashed *fan* : of Debbie Harry, of Howlin' Wolf, of everything wild and free in American music. I love his air of charming gaucherie. I love his scorpion necklace and his plush and pouting mouth. I love his Quixotic attempt to mutate "Ain't That Peculiar" into "Smokestack Lightnin'". But more than any of that, I love the way that he played with the blues. There is a real difference, you know, between *playing* the blues and *playing WITH* the blues. To really *play* the blues - to play it straight - I think you have to be a certain kind of person, and to have lived a certain kind of life. But if you're willing to respectfully acknowledge the founders of the blues, and if you know that they did it first, then you can *play WITH* the blues. I mean, you can take a few pinches and scraps from the old Blues tradition, and let yourself be inspired by the blues to create new songs. Anyone can play with the blues, I think, just as long as they do it with respect. And I think that Jeffrey Lee did. R.I.P, sweet Jeffrey Lee. I wish I could have met you.
I was lucky and did get to meet him once. I was staying with an English friend in L.A. in Sept.1995 and decided to try to get into The Viper Room to see 'Neurotic Lost Boys' whom were playing a residency; a show every week for a month. The week before Slash came on and did 3 songs; this show Iggy did it. I somehow managed to blag my way in after waiting for 1 hour and a half and the line not moving. It's a long story what else happened that night (I met almost the entire band that night: Matt Sorum,John Taylor, Steve Jones but not Duff) including Rodney Bingenheimer and Iggy (Who was an arrogant and aggressive prick to any man who tried to speak to him.) and Johnny Depp who wasn't a prick. He wasn't the giant star he was then but he spoke to people. But it was Jeffrey whom impressed me the most. I interrupted him talking to his pals saying my band supported him once(But I didn't say that I wasn't in the band at the time but my band raved about that Gun Club show somewhere in the U.K. in the late 80's) and he spoke to me for 15 minutes in this insane cackling mood he was in. He was a bit drunk but very friendly and told me how he got to sing on-stage with Nick Cave at a 95' Shepherds Bush show and then did these leg splits and howled imitating him. Most people didn't know who he was and stared in shock as he imitated Nick screaming on his knees and excitably telling me anecdotes of his travels and music and laughing really loud. If you walked past you would think, "Who's that wild man?" I did see The Gun Club play three different times; the first time at London's 'Town & Country Club in - Oct.25, 1987 Sun. They were great. He's very sadly missed and I hear Jack White kind of worshipped him which makes sense.
As a non American, listening to him play makes me feel like I have the American citizenship. He truly is an American treasure and Jack White is right about Jeff's importance.
It’s uncanny. I looked more into Blondie when I learned how much he liked her and can hear her in him in certain songs. “Detroit 442” by Blondie makes me think of Gun Club every time.
So that's how JLP got his hands on obscure Sun records like Ernie Chaffin's Feeling Low - one of the crawled-over rockabilly's that didn't get broken ;) Bob Hite told him, that's totally Cool. Keep the candle burning guys !

As for Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, I met Harry through a friend, she was nice enough but the thing about her and Stein to keep in mind is that they were much older than most of the people on the punk scene, in 1977 Debbie Harry was 33 years old, she must have seen JLP as just some little kid.
I was thinking the same thing! Debbie was gorgeous and they had a handful of really good singles. (My favorite of which is probably a cover of Hanging on the Telephone). Chris Stein did a terrible job on the Miami album. His fandom of Blondie helped ruin the first lineup. Kid Congo and Mother Juno were even better though. So, it all worked out. But I agree. Blondie aren’t great
