He was the original pioneer. Players now might be advancing at an incredible speed, but they’re just walking down the path that Kronovi helped pave. An absolute legend.
8:50 “Unfortunately for Kronovi this would be the biggest accomplishment of his career” If being a world champion is an unfortunate peak than those are some high expectations
A lot of people overlook Leth for the GOAT. He's stayed relevant for a VERY long time and pros today still have to sweat when they play against him. His mechanics aren't even close to the best, but game sense, decision making, and basic skills, he's cream of the crop. And he's a phenomenal teacher!
This is like any other sport. Kronovi was a pioneer who laid the groundwork for the next generation. No pitcher from the early 1900s could make it in the MLB today, and Esports have even more volatile growth than more conventional sports, so it makes sense that he couldn’t stay on top forever. However, he will always be one of the greats
This is the type of high-quality content I love, and it used to be the reason I WAS subscribed to Sunless. You can easily tell how Wayton takes an idea for a video, he researches, dissects, structures, comes up with a planned script and then edits it to make it all fall into place, probably passing through multiple iterations until this awesome final product comes to fruition. Outstanding job!
Totally agree, it's why I first subbed to Sunless. He doesn't really do content like that anymore. I think Wayton has a passion for film making and you really see it come out in these videos. There was an empty space for these documentary type RL videos and Wayton is delivering exceptionally well. If we can get a video once a month like this, that'd be hype.
exactly this, khan used to be my favorite rl youtuber but now his videos are so uninteresting and repetitive, compared to wayton who id describe as sunless in his prime and then twice as good
This is kind of wrong, because in RLCS 1, Kronovi's team was actually considered to be an underdog. At this point Kuxir's Team Flipsid3 Tactics was considered to be the best team in the world, and Kuxir the best player. The video is really good, but it feels like it's overly portraying Kronovi as the undisputed best, when him and Kuxir were always very much equals. You can make an argument for Kronovi being the best, but not while leaving Kux out of the picture like this.
Yep, people even thought lucky bounce was better and that switching Gambit to Over Zero probably really helped iBP rather than it being a disadvantage because they were not looking good in qualifier 2 probably from coms
Underdog because of his teammates. Everyone agrees kro was leagues ahead and was the carry/backbone for that team doing well. Kux had stellar teammates beside him (even though, yes, he was considered the best on his team). Best two in the world for sure, but kro basically super supported eeeeeeverything his teammates did and was always in the right place at the right time. His game sense was absolutely off the charts. :)) No hate, just love for your opinion though. Have a great day my man! ^-^
@@ethanheadrick7027 Oh for sure, Kronovi was by far the best in the team. I'm just trying to promote some more detailed journalism instead of this whole "As expected, they were dominating the event" narrative. You have a great day too!
To Kronovi's defence, no other esport is as unforgiving as this one. Top pro players last no more than two or three seasons in this game. It's much different compared to many other esports were there's 27-28 yo players still dominating after years of them playing.
Which is what makes Squishy the GOAT for me, nobody else has been that relevant. I think the skill ceiling always raises in every game. The absolutely best e-sports players in their genre, Faker, Viper and Flash/Jaedong etc would at their peak lose in direct comparison to the best current players, but that doesn't damper their absolute dominating rule of their time.
@@LasseLundster Then Kronovi would be the strongest Rocket League player to have ever existed. As the video said, at the start of Rocket League as an esport Kronovi could solo carry teams to victories in major competitions. No other RL player has achieved that ever since. Still, Squishy is definetly one of the most dominant RL players as he managed to win the world championship twice.
@@davidebic I agree, but including overall span of competetive career and the state of competition as factors beyond only level of reign, as Kronovi was a battle car pro at release in a young scene. I think a strong case can be made for both as overall bonjwa, and it's just my personal opinion that overall factors outweigh peak skill level gap from you to the scene, especially considering the above, weighs slightly less. But I wouldn't be surprised if Kronovi was declared the GOAT, either, and support either opinion.
@@LasseLundster well a title such as the GOAT are way too subjective. The only relevant fact is who's dominating at a certain point in time and oh boi ZEN is looking amazing rn. He's a strong candidate to joining the zenith of RL players.

I was able to witness the beginning of rocket league's skill ceiling long ago, and it's incredible how far the game has come. This game would be nothing without Kronovi's investments and it makes me so happy to see videos like this. Great job.

Man i wonder how much people actually remember Krovovi for being one of the best player in RL back in those years. I can defiently say i remember watching his YT videos when i was getting into RL myself back in like 2015/16. Long live a legend of RL for his time.
Love the content. I began playing in like June or July 2015. Kronovi was definitely the undisputed king then. By July 2016, it was a battle between him, Marky, Kux, and Paaschy. You noted this well most of his rivals have long retired. A garden variety GC 1 is better than the best back then. That Mount Kronovi is relevant is pretty amazing.
I began around the same time. Yes Kronovi was the best back then, but for a long time I saw Kux as the best and I thought this video might be about him to be honest. Where Kronovi dit a lot in the beginning, Kux got to the top when the competition was a lot more on fire and watching him felt like watching a wizard with a lot of tricks up his sleeve and a reaction time that didn't seem possible. Still, in terms of popularity and his early rise I understand he gave Kronovi the title.
It's not even bad that he got surpassed, he pretty much pioneered the advanced techniques in the game, and it's only gone up from there. That's just the way of things, everything and everyone gets to learn things earlier and improve on them, that's how everything progresses and evolves.
I love how you made a graph-like mountain for the thumbnail to represent the rise and fall of Kronovi, which also resembles his profile picture on yt, with a crown on the top of the mountain, symbolizing the time when he was considered the best rl player.
This kinda reminds me of Einstein in a way. If we take an average physicist and compare it to Einstein, the average physicist would have way more knowledge and skill than Einstein. But Einstein is truly amazing for his ability to come up with complex and phenomenal theories with little technology.
@@hesaidchest well it’s not just about technology. We physicists learn many of the ideas Einstein had to put a lot of thought into at such an early time. The concepts that physicists at that time would struggle with is what modern physicists learn during uni or even high school. These concepts becomes our second nature, but for Einstein it would probably take more effort.
@@hesaidchest well he did make a massive mistake when using one of his own theories, a couple of times in fact. But besides that, it would still make sense. People are able to do so much more because the theories Einstein made up is built up in their foundational knowledge.
Kronovi discovered what I would say is the mathematical equivalent to multiplication or division, now a days the game has evolved into complicated calculus. The game has "changed" so much while none at all, I am amazed at the way the players have made so much progress over the years making new mechanics, in-game tactics, etc.
Watching his play in the early days is what inspired me to learn wall to air dribbles which is still my favorite thing to to in rocket league 👍 everybody else was on the ground and he went over them all from the wall it was incredible to see so early.
So how did you learn it? I'm like 700 hours in (Plat 1, so couldn't be more average ;) ), tried to train it and watched tutorials, but kept getting frustrated and never mastered it. Is there any special trick or something about how I can learn and practice it?
@@bruellbart2380 definitely free play. Just spend time chilling in free play listening to music, watching a show in the background, but spend time in free play. I also suggest trying to find players higher level than you to play with. You’ll improve so much by running constantly with people better than you.
EXCELLENT premise and delivery of content in this video. I would have loved to hear from Kronovi about what he believes led to that decline. Was he not practicing enough? Were there challenging life circumstances at that point in his life? Was he just simply being outplayed for no reason at all? I think a short interview with him would have been very enlightening for all of us (an interview I'm assuming you tried to obtain). After seeing this video he may be more motivated to give his side of the story and what he believes led to his fall from the top. I would love to hear from him concerning this particular topic.
Damn. It's really weird to think about how much the game has changed. I didn't follow rlcs and just heard rumors about kronovi and maybe watched him on twitch a couple times. Used to think he was godlike. 6 years later I hit GC and apparently kronovi was playing like a high diamond that whole time. Wild. Time truly changes almost everything.
you should do this for each season of rlcs. I just started playing and watching so having this type of context when going back and watching makes it so much sweeter.
I'd hardly call it a "fall." Krenovi was early to the top when the skill cap was much lower and stayed competitive for a number of seasons. As others caught up he shined less but clearly is capable of top level play
This video is incredible and I’m glad he’s getting recognition for the bar he set early on. I just recently started getting back into RL and I was wondering why I haven’t heard his name mentioned in any RL content. I’ve been seeing Zen’s name everywhere and I’m wondering if he will be the next “Kronovi” in that he will be the undisputed best player in the world for a while.
Its actually crazy go see the classic Kronovi footage which at the time blew my mind and now see everyday in diamond 1-3. He was truly what got my into rocket league and I definitely learnt the game from his streams (I remember once talking to someone at work about RL and they were struggling to grasp a forward double jump and here we are watching this guy score crazy aerials 1 day after release ). I imagine he will be a face on RL esports on the panel for years to come.
Without him and his dedication to Rocket league i cant imagine. 99% of the Rocket league Playerbase is still using what he and other legends invented. All the Basics we still use today aeriels, Rotations everything we think of as normal is thanks to this guy. He is truely the reasson how we play Rocket league today.
I've played this game since July 7th, 2015. I remember watching kronovi score these crazy goals and wanting to be able to do it so bad. I practiced every single day after school. Now I'm 23 and have racked up 8,000 hours. I spend my time helping people learn the mechanics I only dreamed of back then. This is an awesome video, Wayton. Glad to see a video about the Greatest Rocket league player of all time. Cheers!
Some people really don't understand the weight of that first RLCS win for iBP. Back in the earliest days, the original positioning strategy actually used to be to have one player stay in net and defend the whole game while the other two went up on offense the whole game. Flipsid3, the team iBP beat to win was literally the first team to ever establish the concept of rotating. Not only were they a stacked team with 3 players who all could have made a case for best in the world at the time, but they also had an advantage over all the other teams because they were the original creators of rotations and had been doing it for longer than all the other teams had. Meanwhile, Kronovi's team struggled during the 2nd qualifier largely because of their 3rd teammate, Gambit dropping out. They went from having one of the best players in NA as their 3rd to being forced to play with a sub no one had heard of. It was truly a massive upset to see them go all the way and beat Flipsid3 two times.
They didn't create rotating. They simply thought of the concept before anyone else did. I don't understand how people don't grasp this? Literally, if you just let time pass, the mechanic would have most certainly been thought of by someone else. With such a large player base for a game, eventually optimal mechanics make their way to the top. People can't "create" mechanics in a game that they didn't code. They're the ones playing the games. They're the ones finding out what the game engine can do. They didn't create anything though. It was just under their noses until they came across it.
@@ReaperOnRepo That's besides the point. My point is, they were doing it before anyone else. They had been utilizing the rotation strategy before anyone else so they were better at it than anyone else. They knew each others positioning style better. And all 3 of their players were probably top 5. Flipsid3 during those first 2 seasons was scary good.
I think this video is great in many ways, especially the pacing and editing. I do have some narrative issues, though, mainly that I think Kronovi's relative skill even in the early days seems overblown. No mention at all of Kuxir from those pre-RLCS days. I think it is disingenuous to say Kro was by far best player in the world back the; certainly in NA, but not the world. Also, no mention of Lachinio or Gambit when talking about league play of S1, though this is a minor grievance. Kro is certainly deserving of a video chronicling his career, but I think to say he was the best in the world for any period of time beyond the weekend of S1 Worlds is unfair to pretty much the whole EU scene pre RLCS. And I say all this as an NA resident. In any case, thank you for making this video and helping us relive some old memories. I hope that going forward you might take a more balanced approach when doing historical pieces so that context can be properly laid for those that may not have been around to experience these events as they unfolded.
So because he won against the other teams multiple times, it's unfair to say he was better than those teams??? Mechanics aren't the only factor lol, he was the best player in the world at the time and thats about it, you can't argue he won fucking worlds but he was only better during worlds and the other game ibp beat flipside in, but other than that not as good, literally straight bias lmao
The legend of Rocket League. I was annoyed when he was kicked off g2. No matter how deep down he falls, he will always be my number 1. I hope that even after 100 years, his name would still live on as a legend because he truly is.
Reading the comments, I see so many describe how good your edits are. For me, I didn't even notice the edits..... thus I think I can confidently say, your edits were perfection, as that should ultimately be the goal. Great trip down memory lane and I think a well deserved homage to the OG GOAT.
I do and will always enjoy watching and support Kronovi. He’s had a tough time, he still has lots he needs to work on as a player. He’s tainted by success and failure in a unique way. I hope he will rise up again. I think he could if only he put in the time.

Ty for this video man. Really brought the history of this game to the newer players. It was a lot of fun watching him and others grow and improve and as you said. Set the precedent for what this game would become💪
Fun fact: Kronovi was the first to show the half backflip ,in order to turn the car 180 degrees, on stage. Before that everyone just backflipped until they could find time to turn somewhere.
I want to say Kronovi seems pretty similar to Surgical Goblin in Clash Royale. Absolute powerhouse of a player, making 15k tournaments and CCGS (along with every other major tournament in 2017) look like a walk in the park. Until mid-2018, he was undisputedly the best player in the world, and paved the way for plenty of players to get into competitive. Huge streaming presence on Twitch too. Unfortunately, his skill deteriorated at some point when he was on Team Liquid with Kanario and DiegoB, and those players began to become better, and Surgical went from a 1v1 master to a niche 2v2 player who was only on the team due to his synergy with Kanario. He stopped playing CRL in 2019 I think, and now plays Fortnite a bunch, but very similar career trajectory as Kronovi.
Great video. I knew a good portion of the story already but you were good enough in your delivery and style that you still captured my focus. Can tell a lot of work went into this. Well done.

“Unfortunately for Kronovi this would be the biggest accomplishment of his career”
If being a world champion is an unfortunate peak than those are some high expectations
And it's not that this was his only success, he also won Eleague!
Well if he won any worlds after it would be bigger. Since this is the first ever worlds in an esport which is still developing.

Yo nice seeing you here.
Hello 🐐
Hi hgg
Yoo Hhg love ur vids
This is like any other sport. Kronovi was a pioneer who laid the groundwork for the next generation. No pitcher from the early 1900s could make it in the MLB today, and Esports have even more volatile growth than more conventional sports, so it makes sense that he couldn’t stay on top forever. However, he will always be one of the greats
Hearing Kronovi falling apart in the competitive community broke my heart 💔
If we can get a video once a month like this, that'd be hype.
exactly this, khan used to be my favorite rl youtuber but now his videos are so uninteresting and repetitive, compared to wayton who id describe as sunless in his prime and then twice as good
I'm gonna dedicate my next RL documentary to you three fucks. Look for your name in the credits
@@mashedinc.3037 it definitely isn't repetitive

NA bias ?
@@ethanheadrick7027 Oh for sure, Kronovi was by far the best in the team. I'm just trying to promote some more detailed journalism instead of this whole "As expected, they were dominating the event" narrative. You have a great day too!
@@kerseykerman7307 gotcha gotcha :)) cheers.
"Upon it's release, only six years ago..."
That one hit hard man
To Kronovi's defence, no other esport is as unforgiving as this one.

I was never super close personal friends with any of them, however Kronovi and iBP gave me one of the most unique experiences i've ever had in my life.
Wayton bro u killing the content again keep it up my guy 👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻
This brings me back to when this legend ruled and I looked up to him
It's not even bad that he got surpassed, he pretty much pioneered the advanced techniques in the game, and it's only gone up from there.

@@hesaidchest well it’s not just about technology. We physicists learn many of the ideas Einstein had to put a lot of thought into at such an early time. The concepts that physicists at that time would struggle with is what modern physicists learn during uni or even high school.
Even the title of this vid just speaks “Kronovi”. A legend never to be forgotten..
Watching Kronovi hit a wall shot in 2015 convinced me to buy this game.
Just had to revisit this video after the recent news, what a damn legend.

Wayton: “We have these people to thank for how competitive Rocket League has become.” Me: Gee, thanks -_-

This bothered me too
So because he won against the other teams multiple times, it's unfair to say he was better than those teams??? Mechanics aren't the only factor lol, he was the best player in the world at the time and thats about it, you can't argue he won fucking worlds but he was only better during worlds and the other game ibp beat flipside in, but other than that not as good, literally straight bias lmao
This was really well done. Great documentary!!
