It never seems as there is going to be enough car parking available.
Are they going to build more?

The idea isn’t to drive and park… it’s to use the Metro.
Remember SYD only had 200 or so parking spaces until the early 2000’s when they extended the parking and built the P7 Multi Level carpark

The initial capacity is around Canberra and Gold Coast combined, and the initial parking will reflect that. Nothing stopping expansion of that outwards and upwards as time goes on. So to get an idea of how much parking is needed, have a look at Canberra and Gold Coast airports on Google Maps. The parking is easily seen on satellite view.
People choose to get to an airport in different ways. E.g. Sydney has a combination of taxi/uber, drive/park, kiss and ride, train or bus (about 20-25%) and a surprising number who use private airport mini-bus services from various suburbs.
People on a budget will probably kiss and ride, or use the metro or buses. I doubt the metro will have a high or any surcharge as it was a unique build situation at Sydney; and 'Westies' (the majority of initial passengers) probably would really arc up politically. I wouldn't mind a minor surcharge, but just enough to deter yahoos treating it as a shopping mall.
Parking at Sydney Airport is very expensive, and tends to be more the domain of business travellers (paid for by their company), not VFRs (visiting friends and relatives) and tourists. Well heeled tourists will probably still fly into Sydney for a harbour view stay. Economy tourists already get picked up tour buses and stay in cheaper accommodation in the west while doing local tours and kangaroo patting, before group travel to other places in Australia.
Sydney has a number of cheaper privately run parking areas outside the airport, some with airport drop off and pick up. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the same pop up in places like St Marys or even Luddenham village.
Most "Are they gonna..." questions can easily be answered by looking online. Search for WSI Airport Site Layout 10MAP (10 million passengers per year) for its initial years layout, and Airport Site Layout 82MAP (82 million passengers per year), for its 2060s expansion.

That's a really good question. My best guess would be at the north end, on the same alignment as the first main terminal, around abeam the 23 (23R) threshold.
Ultimately two twin taxiways will connect the two sides of the airport. The northernmost is an extension from the second taxiway of each runway across and over where you can see the two roundabouts in the internal road system. (Notice how the roads there are sunk lower than the runway/taxiway elevation.)
There is an apron and facilities area marked on the same alignment as the first main terminal/apron, but north of those eventual cross taxiways. It appears to be for general aviation such as business jets, and probably with suitable space for a helipad and rotary wing hard standing.
That's a bit speculative, but I can't see any other available areas with similar characteristics. Have a look at WSI Airport Site Layout 82MAP for more detail. Would be interested in your comments.

It is designed to primarily be functional. It's also not just a terminal. The runway layout, taxiway system, auto landing systems, air traffic control and luggage/passenger handling facilities are leading edge.
It will get passengers airborne and get them in and out of the terminal after landing much faster than at say Sydney airport. Just like people love the new city metro for its speed and efficiency, so will air travellers really notice the difference at WSI, even if they don't understand why it's so much faster.
Apart from that it has three saving graces.
      (i) It is designed in stages to meet increasing demand until the 2060s, rather than just evolving haphazardly like many airports. While you now see a single terminal with short 'wings, and seven piers, you will eventually get four interconnected terminals with extended wings in a 'H' pattern with over 70 piers. Way more capacity for growth than at Sydney Airport.
(ii) The main experience for travellers is from being inside the terminal, not looking at it from the outside. I think the architecture suggestive of being under a forest canopy, is far nicer than most terminals I've been in, maybe Singapore excepted.
(iii) It has great natural outlooks; the first terminal faces a horizon to horizon panorama of the world heritage Blue Mountains. Few airports have anything like that sort of setting, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Which airports are you comparing it to, and how would you have designed it?

    • @ironbark88
      @ironbark88 2 месяца назад +1

@@colindobson4045I think public infrastructure is a lot more than just function. Otherwise we would just build cheap functional tin sheds. Where would sydney be without its opera hpuse, Paris without its Pompideau, London without its Regency buildings and so on.
Like the grand central railway stations in the past, International airports are the gateway to a nation and for most visitors their first impression of a city or nation.
Some may find the simple boxy form of WSA attractive in a minimalist way. I find it a missed opportunity to display the best of Australian engineering, design and innovation.
But as you say, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Construction of the Airport Rescue and Fire Service station seems to have commenced (2.27 - left centre).
There appears to be a resident crow just north of the terminal with an aversion for drones. It's made cameo appearances on several clips, including this one at about 1.12. Should have a name for it - I suggest 'Nancy'.
