Seems like a handy little thing to have, especially for a bushcraft/survival setup

I have had one for 6 years and they are great. I gifted Dave Canterbury his and since then they have went main stream. Great tool indeed. The patent ran out and now schrade is producing a very similar tool. I have yet to hold one of those but curious as to a heads up between the two tools if you find one and have the time. Thanks again for sharing.

The Schrade one looks interesting, much worse steel, but only $25 I think, not on Amazon yet though.

I have the flexcut knife and love it. I always use it to carve little paracord lanyard beads, like helmets from Starwars (boba fett, darth vader, kylo ren) and other stuff like animal heads. It works really well and holds an edge super long. I'm quite happy with it. The price they are charging is still to high in my opinion. I got mine as a present though.

for home use. craving tools could be an alternative.. Longer handles and price competitive. But in the field that jewel would be the ticket for sure. ( i crave wood as part of my job).

Great video thanks 😊. I will have to check out the Swiss Army whittling book as it may inspire me to whittle more and finally get around to using my flex cut carving jack. I to bought my flex jack for the spoon carving tool but plan to learn how to use all of the other blades too. With my SAK's pared with my carving jack I have the tools to carve anything on the go.

Very cool. I couldn't tell you how many times I've had to make spoons on backpacking trips.
So many that I actually purchased a curved blade from Mora and put it in my Maxpedition edc pouch (which always goes in the pack).
But your knife is waaay cooler :)

Thank you for the review. I have been looking at whittling tools for some time now and have not been sure what to get. My fear with the carving jack is that it would be uncomfortable after a while.
What is the comfort level and how do you sharpen it?

Great first effort, but you made the same mistake I did when I started. I used a dry piece of wood, and made a Kuksa and it was a BEOTCH to carve out! I soon learned that most utensil and cup carving by hand is done ONLY with green wood. A total DUH moment, LOL.

Steven Szabo also took me several spoons to realize that... now that I've made tons and tons it's like a second nature to grab the wettest wood. Very different than construction where you want the driest wood

Its funny how schrade just came in and undercut them big time by basically coming out with the same knife (minus the locking tools) for like a tiny fraction of the price.

Say Heah Is, it's 1095. Easy to sharpen and holds a decent edge retention. I Also got the Strop Block for sharpening all the tools, plus compound. So that's why it's alittle more expensive, but take all that in, and it's not that bad. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

Just type "wood carving multitool knife" and it shows up.

    • @WeAllJuggleKnives
      @WeAllJuggleKnives  7 лет назад

I think a computer program does their prices. After getting the tool I realized that I probably could have used either version though, because I usually push on the spine of the blade when I whittle, so the right hand one would have worked better for me even though I'm left handed.

What do you think of the Schrade Old Timer Carving knife?

    • @WeAllJuggleKnives
      @WeAllJuggleKnives  7 лет назад

It seems like a decent tradeoff, it has lower quality steel, but at such a lower price I think it's fine for occasional use or on the road. I'm going to try one.

      WeAllJuggleKnives
Great video. Ive got this carving jack among other flexcut knives and even the old timer version if the carving jack.
I'lll tell ya something I like to do. I live in a hilly wooded area. Split a lot of wood. .. allow me to paint a small picture... I also been getting into hand crafting Jews harps. Well anybody that knows anything about Jews harps will know that good quality Jews harps often come in neat little hand crafted cases of wood. Some whittled, some constructed from hobby wood. Primarily tho, they are whittled to fit the particular Jews harp, which come from all over the world by individual makers and craftsmen.
So, I've made about 6 Jews harps now, and still perfecting that craft.
I have access to a creek which often washes new logs of all types of wood on to the property.
So I often find some beautiful wood of many various hardness and colors .
One way I like to gain a good peice of wood stock for whittling...
Once I've selected a desireable wood, I'll cut a log.
Then, I'll split the log with a splitting maul.
I'll split the peice usually 8 ways, give or take, depending on the particular width.
I go through the splittings and select a good peice and cut I to a desireable length.
Now, I could use that peice and begin whittling right away.
But I like to save my good carving knives a little, so before I begin to whittle the peice of wood. I'll give the peice a good rasping. This kinda turns your wood stock from a simple peice of split wood, to a nice smooth and relatively even starting point of nice wood stock.
That's something I like to do and find the rasping really help ride my whittling price from rough edges of being split.
It's just an easy way to get nice hard wood for whittling, straight out of the woods. With the most basic tools available.
This is just for folks who want to go a bit beyond whittling a branch. Which is often younger wood.
To get the wood deep in the heart of the tree, this is one way I gain very nice peices to make cases for Jews harps.

      WeAllJuggleKnives
Like you did, a peice of gnarly wood. But giving it a good rasping first, really helps make a good starting point.
      Rasp is key.
