Recently found a Macallan 12 in a dusty shop which was bottled back in 2012. Comparing it to their recent 12 and 18 it absolutely crushed both of them which simply tells you how deep they fell sadly.

    • @welshtoro3256

Those old 12's were very good and the same is true of the 18's. They used to be superb even when bottled at 43%. The last great 18 year distillation was 1995 - 2013 bottling. My good pals over on Peat Lova, who were great Macallan fans back in the day, did a fine review commenting about the change. Macallan don't colour so it was immediately obvious, because of the colour, that the casks (post 1995) weren't as good and the whisky inferior. I still have a 1994 distillation but the price has increased so wildly I'm nervous about ever opening it and would sell it. I've never flipped in my life but the price is so bonkers (north of £1,000) that I would consider offers.

Very true, Macallan is very overrated malt whisky. High prices, low quality. It's just industrial whisky making, that's what they do.

They make it on a massive industrial scale at mediocre quality then charge artisan prices as if it’s rare and amazing. Can’t stand their ethos. I’d be interested to do the tour though to see the contrast between that and normal sized distilleries.

I bought a bottle of Macallan 25 in 2000 for $387. I opened it 16 years later for my 20th wedding anniversary. It was fabulous. I haven't bought another Macallan bottle since (I have received some as gifts). I agree 100% with your list and would add Highland Park to it. They released so many young NAS bottles that didn't live up to their marketing. I will make one exception for Dalmore as I really enjoy the Cigar Malt.

I echo your list my man, absolutely! I just shot a video myself about 5 whiskies I wouldn't buy again but I went a more specific way as in certain expressions but I like your thinking as I completely agree with everything you said. There are soooo many whiskies out there with new players coming in strong with craft presentation whilst the old guard rest on their laurels. Just bought one from House of Malt for £145. Keeping it for hogmanay. Just finished a Macallan Rare Cask 2022 and it was dynamite. 12 year Sherry Oak in my opinion is also worth the money. For me, any thing that isn't 100% sherry cask isn't a proper Macallan and would touch it with a barge pole, never mind forking out £200 plus.

  • @silverfox108

Agree with most of what you had to say. Macallan for the most part is much to expensive and the lack of proper percentage of alcohol and age is a factor. Also becoming way to expensive for most drinkers. I have tried several bottles over the past years and found them wanting

Really nice discussion over these Whiskies and pointing out some relevant points in the actual modern Whisky Industry. It seems obvious that marketing concerns and cask management are strongly focused and driven by many distilleries. On the other hand you can't argue about taste. Exactly that bottle of Macallan (Classic Cut 2021) is one of my favourite Whiskies. I can't explain but that notes and aromas of honey, candy floss, pastries, oak spiciness blow me away. I had several Macallans the last years and there were several very good Whiskies for example the Macallan 15 and Macallan No 6 and some independent bottlings. What I absolutely don't like is the Macallan 12 Sherry Oak with 40 % ABV. That's a joke. The whisky tastes watered down. The US version instead with 43 % ABV is much better. I hope Macallan will correct that soon.

There is so many that deserve to be on this list. I would say glenlivet, glenmorangie, glenfiddich, benriach, glenglassaugh. These are only decent at the 15-18+ yr age, or Independent bottlings. But one would need to spend huge money. For entry range, would have spent the money on bruichladdich, glendronach, aultmore.

Their 18 year-old is fantastic and I look forward to grabbing some of their peated expressions and their 24 year-old. I can't totally agree on Dalmore, however. The King Alexander III is truly worth the price and is something special.

I have no interest at all in Jura or Dalmore for the same reasons you mention, and Macallan... well, any serious whisky enthusiast knows it's a shadow of its former self and one that (IMO) only suckers purchase, or flippers to sell to suckers who are holding on to pre 2000's (and earlier) Macallan's reputation.

    @welshtoro3256 Год назад +7

Hi T, good to see you back. You know, I'm glad you did this video. I'm far more interested in whisky discussions than straight out whisky reviews these days. I like this because it's not a rant (but I like them too) and a reasonable rationale. Grenrothes are definitely on my list. I haven't bought any of that stuff for years. Generic? Yes, they all taste like liquid caramel and the abv sucks.
Even before you got to the end of Glenrothes I was thinking of Dalmore and Jura. Dalmore is soooo Richard Patterson era whisky. Coloured to hide the crappy casks which make it taste younger than the age statement and, naturally, the crud abv. Just to make it even better is the sensationally bullshit price. Dalmore hasn't felt the need to change for years. It's so old fashioned it has a stag on the bottle because it comes from Scotland don't you know.
Jura is such a nothing offering. It's so boring and unambitious. Even their revamped line up a few years ago was a damp squib. You relaunch the brand and it has all the components we don't like - E150, chill-filtration, crap abv. I know some folk like this stuff but for me you might as well just throw your money down the toilet. Again, we're back in Patterson era whisky. It's a mindset from an era long gone.
Like you, I think Richard Patterson is a great whisky ambassador. His knowledge of whisky and the history of whiskies is superb. I have his really excellent book. The thing is, that world of whisky has moved on big time. In the last decade it's been blown away. Tumblers and whisky with a drop of water. Stags and kilts. And, most importantly, a complete shift in how consumers want their whisky and drive the production process rather than being fed Scottish clichés, E150, crap abv and chill-filtration. It's all very much based on whisky as a profit machine for the big owners but I don't see why I would spend my money on such a poor offering. It's not 1983.
The last could include quite a number of distilleries if I'm honest. Seriously, how crap is Cardhu? Macallan is a good choice though because that embodies so many issues we have with whisky. I notice that you don't have to buy any Macallan because your shelf looks fairly well stocked. I haven't bought one since the ED2. My sole surviving bottle is a 1994 18 which I know is excellent and worth more than £1,000 today. There's a tiny roadside bar near my pad in Spain that sells a glass of Macallan 12 and a good pour. That's my Macallan experience now. It's actually very good but far too expensive. My Macallan experience started in the 1980's. When I was a young man I would receive a bottle of Macallan 10 (patxarette) from sales reps and swig it out of the bottle. They are just an overpriced gimmick now I'm so sad to say. Macallan today is just a liquid marketing machine with no concern about price/quality. It's a money making gimmick and good luck to them. I'm not buying any more bottles.
One thing to consider is that all of these distilleries are really designed to provide juice for the even more profitable market of blended whisky. Food for thought.
    Peace. WT

Totally agree on ur choices here. I don’t feel any points are deserved for the marketing genius of Macallan bec those “ideas” are not only unnecessary if the liquid was special, but tends to actually substitute for quality.

Glenrothes=I mostly agree. Kind of. It's a hard game as there are so many actually bad tasting whiskies. Some Icelandic whisky comes to mind, the name escapes me. It was absolutely awful. But I agree most of the Glenrothes line up is kind of trying to please everyone, and are a bit average as you said. I have one Glenrothes whisky, "whisky makers cut" NAS which I liked so much I bought a second one. 48.8% so it has nice strength. and good pleasant profile of vanilla, chocolate and nuts. give that one a try if you haven't already. Think it was 60€ in my expensive country so you can probably get it cheaper. A good daily dram.
Jura Dalmore= Definitely agree. All kinds of marketing baloney but not so much substance.
Macallan=I can't disagree. Especially for the price/quality ratio has gotten quite poor. I had some older ones but I've drunk them all :D
    I would add one more.
Auchentoschan=Heavily colored. So heavily that I'm imagining that I'm tasting the coloring. Flavor again very generic. In my admittedly limited experience.

Yeah they’re overpriced but that seems to be about everything these days. 15, 18 and special editions are VERY overpriced now, sadly 😩 It’s a shame cause even if todays bottling’s are barely a shadow of their former selfs, it still has that distinct Macallan profile that I like and can’t find anywhere else. @@MaltActivist I think I was emotionally scarred when I realized that every Game of Thrones whisky was the same color. And those of us who care will never get justice from that huge corporate multinational because we are only a tiny percentage of the market.
We all seem to have a different level of activism, but most are not doing a full boycott.
Funny thing is that I read on Google that Diageo visitor centers and their whisky tourism is up 15%

You are right about Dalmore, Jura and Macallan. These guys are really over the hill with the cost and with low ABV, they are not worth the money. I can accept them as gift but I also wouldn't want pay for these brands, I once bought a Macallan 15 and felt let down and felt buying two Glenmorangie would have been a better decision.

The only story a whiskey should tell is what's in the bottle. Alone. The last thing glenroth needs to do is waste money on advertisers and pr. They need invest in good casks and cast it nonchilll filtered and natural color.

Didn't care much for the clickbaity title... But, I agree with you 100%! As you said, those are not whiskies for aficionados but for people with more money than sense and I actually think that is great! To each their own... What I am actually more concerned are the once consistent malts that are beginning to fall in quality. Talisker 10 comes to mind. One of my favorites and not as good as I remembered it to be.

If you follow that advice to buy all of these whiskys buy the 375ml or the small sample size if you have them or get them at a bar. Don't buy bottle after bottle. With how much whiskey prices are skyrocketing don't just buy full 700ml or 750ml whiskys. Horrible advice from a financial point of view. I agree on not buying Glenrothes and Macallan again. I'm also not buying Bowmore again.
