I spent 11 years in the RAAF and I just got tossed aside like so many ADF members. I guess this is one of the only things USA does mostly right. They respect veterans, Australia certainly doesn't.
The problem with these military style surprises is that they are all over social media and the love ones at home will always be expecting a surprise from there military relation spoiling the surprise. It is nice for the viewing audience but as I mentioned everyone will be expecting.
