  • How to clean silver using baking soda. Cleaning silver with aluminum foil and baking soda is one of the easiest and cheapest methods to get your cherished pieces looking shiny and new. In this tutorial, we will show you how to clean silver with aluminum foil and baking soda.
    www.mylittlecr...
    Ingredients:
    Silver jewelry or cutlery
    Glass bowl
    Boiling water
    Baking soda
    Aluminum foil
    Steps:
    1. Place a sheet of standard aluminum foil, shiny side up, in the bottom of a glass bowl.
    2. Set the silver objects on top of the aluminum foil. Make sure the silver touches the aluminum.
    3. Fill the container with boiling water, preferably from a tea kettle or other container from which you can pour it safely.
    4. Add 1 tablespoon (or small bag) of baking soda per cup of water. The solution will bubble and froth a bit.
    5. Allow your silver to soak for 2-3 minute, or as long as five minutes for heavily-tarnished items. You can mix it little bit.
    6. Carefully remove your silver items. You can rinse it in clear water.
    7. You can also polish it little bit with paper towel or cotton cloth.
    8. Pretty incredible difference, right? We were beyond impressed with how well this trick actually worked. You can repeat the procedure for badly tarnished silver.

    Can I use baking powder ?

    • @frozenhorse8695
      @frozenhorse8695 День назад

      Better late than never.. I tried with baking powder, but only with little effect. So i kept searching, and found a website, that recommended, using, boiling water, tow dining spoons of salt, and to baking powder, and then leave it for an hour.
      So water, salt, baking powder, mix it, and put the silver in. I am testing it as I type, and i'll be back soon, with the result.

    • @frozenhorse8695
      @frozenhorse8695 День назад

      Well.. the salt and the boiled water, should apparently only help speed up the process, but the result i'm getting, is exactly the same. It removes alot of it, but still leaves mis collorration all over the silver. So now i'm only left with a.. hmmm and a longer nose.

    Why do some recipes say baking powder with salt and vinegar?

    • @tamarothA
      @tamarothA 3 года назад +2

      Probably because sodium bicarbonate and vinegar produce acetate ions (alongside co2, water and sodium ion). No idea tho how much acetate helps with cleaning.

      I use salt and vinegar to dissolve tarnish on copper and copper alloys. I have not tried adding baking soda (I don't baking powder is necessary) to the mix.

      jimmyjay122 Thus method uses electrolytic action instead of chemical-polish abrasion and removes the tarnish from oxidized silver without removing any of the underlying metal.
