We love that campground!
Same here it was a great place to stop and catch your breath. Definitely a hidden gem.
We went there multiple years when I was a kid in the sixties...(50 plus years ago) There was only the older part of the campground. Those big Ponderosa's? Nope, they were just getting started...just the scrub junipers. You used to be able to see Shiprock from the entrance when all the conditions were right to the south... There are some neat drives in the area... Montezuma Canyon is "Subaru" capable, great day trip... and there are many ruins down that kids or adventurous adults can climb up to. I remember being with my mom and dad walking down a wash in the sixties and seeing a "tell" that was being washed out by the spring floods... At one corner were some blue specks... We walked over and the ones that hadn't already washed away were still in the shape of a bracelet the string holding them together two thirds of a millennium and more gone... It was BLM land, not supposed to touch that kind of stuff, but next rain and it would be gone...so... Truly God's country out there.
